I read Professor Cole's piece first thing this morning and posted a link here and over at Tacitus(yes, I do visit there and have an account; I make my thoughts known but try not to be trollish). The response at Tacitus was somewhat surprising, "I don't like Juan Cole but it's hard to argue with what he said."

We should remember the tragedy of 911 today but we should also remember all of the Afghan and Iraqi civilians who have died since then.

Our country's response to 9/11 and its horror should have been that we would NEVER want to do to innocent people that which was done to us on that infamous day.
Considering how we felt when we watched our citizens, caught between walls of fire, jumping out of tall windows to escape the fate of burning to death, and visualized rescue firemen unable to rescue, or even save themselves, from those flames - we should have vowed right then and there to try to change the violent trends in the world, and to never ever hurt or kill the innocents of this world (e.g., Iraq) - while, at the same time, seeking and punishing those responsible for 9/11.
