Posted by nowness at October 3, 2004 06:07 PMMary, I'm going to keep a civil tongue and not get into it with you over the absurdity of your allegations and characterizations. I'm not even going to argue with your excuse-making for Dan Rather. But the notion that it takes an expert in typography/typesetting to smell a rat with the Killian Forgeries is just silly.
People are observant. People develop incredibly specialized interests, even without benefit of certification or conventional expertise. Do you really doubt, in an age of instantaneous communications and democratized/decentralized means of information dissemination, that some person somewhere in this world would not have reached the same conclusion that Buckhead did?
I happen to know a guy who was directly involved in debunking a claim of a "newly discovered" Shakespeare poem made by a "world-renowned" scholar. This guy is regarded as a bit of a crank and a conspiracy nut. But guess what? He was right and the famous know-it-all was wrong. Eventually, the know-it-all admitted he was wrong. On paper, the guy who was wrong is a big deal and the guy that I know is dismissed. But not on that issue.

In the same way that Little Green Footballs happens to know Karl Rove?
Just asking.
Posted by Matt Davis at October 3, 2004 06:40 PMThis whole thing had Rove's finger prints on it from the beginning. He done it before, it's in his play book.
Posted by Ron In Portland at October 3, 2004 06:59 PMThis whole story is a fascinating puzzle to me, but it remains too big a leap for me to tie it up with a neat Rovian bow.
While there are not enough "dots" for me to piece this together, the Buckhead component is the least mysterious to me. Rove had plenty of time from receipt of the CBS copies to prepare the charge that the documents were forgeries and get it in the hands of Buckhead and maybe others to pitch. Rove is good at making lemonade when handed a bag of lemons.
At a total intuitive level with zero facts to support it, I keep sensing another actor in this drama. Not Rove, someone more shadowy. Perhaps someone who even shares Rove's goals but it far more brazen and intelligent. Or someone who was in it for money. Who had to squeeze really hard to get the price he/she had asked for. (Someone who reads Grisham novels.) Follow the money?
Posted by Marie at October 3, 2004 11:21 PMThis has always looked Rovian, except for one thing: the actual accusations contained in the memos were never denied by the WH, and in fact they were very damning accusations/reports. Stuff that Rove wouldn't want out there.....so he'd have to be 100% sure that the press would overlook the real damage and go for the "fake" story. Of course, when you own the Media.......
