Posted by Howlin' Wolf at October 22, 2004 08:32 AMI'm all for turning off the television and getting some quality time away from the tube, but this smacks of fascism. I'm actually quite surprised to see people on this site touting its merits. Imposing your beliefs or preferences on someone else, whether they be religious or technological, is wrong. Period.

Of course! It's wrong for, say, restaurant owners to impose the "beliefs and preferences" of Faux News on customers who just want food and drink, not propaganda. That's the whole point! Just think: the next time you hear Bill O'Reilly say "shut up," you can say, "OK! You asked for it!"
Seriously, if you're planning to use one of these gizmos to annoy your Faux-watching father-in-law by turning his TV off at random intervals, yeah, that's censorship, and that's wrong. (It's also not going to accomplish anything besides pissing him off.) But nothing's immoral about protecting other innocents from being propagandized against their will.
But though it's not immoral, I'm sure the owners of those propaganda-blasting TVs will have no trouble convincing the state it's illegal. After all, they paid for those boomboxes, Goddamnit! Heck, in today's environment, it probably amounts to cyberterrorism! So keep your TV-B-Gone's out of sight, and don't be surprised when someone invents a TV-B-Gone locator.
