Nasty weather ahead for Ship of State
Anyone who cannot sense there is foul weather ahead is no sailor. Leaks will spring faster than they can be plugged. No pumps in the world will be able to handle the bilge this lot will produce.
It may go down with all hands...
Gee, who'd have thought great naval disasters could be so much fun?

Please god let this happen.

This report needs to be linked to Andy Card's statements from last summer about marketing new ideas after Labor Day.
Posted by Susan at June 7, 2003 05:20 AMThere have been reports that the military has not been pleased with Bush and Rumsfeld, and lately the CIA has been made to look the bunch of fools by BushCo. Both organizations rely upon a certain credibility to accomplish their tasks in today's world, and that credibiilty has been damamged by the BushCo lies about Iraqi WMD. Maybe they are feeding the rumor mill in an effort to oust these obvious incompetents so they can get back to what they do best - spending the taxpayers' wealth on frivolous black ops, PGA-class golf courses and uselessly expensive weapons systems?
Posted by pessimist at June 7, 2003 05:58 AMMaybe, there are many people in the mainstream media ( unlike the current Bush Administration) that actually have a conscience and some morality in their hearts and realize that people died and are still dying because of this milseading deception and lying.
Remember the chant Bush lied, People died. How could people live with themselves knowing they did this?
When the generals begin to leak like the spooks have begun to, this mess should reach critical mass. Looking good so far, as Mr Happy posted on Kos, but still needs a couple weeks work to reach tidal proportions. The sunni uprisings, with unfortunate GI deaths will push the second tier brass in the Pentagon over the edge (and if the shias join in, watch out!), and then it's over. The question is whether a bunch of folks falling on swords can save Shrub? Too soon to tell, but Billmon's quotes that are getting ink (Post today) by Shrub are pretty stark.
Bush lies, more Americans die!
Posted by alf at June 7, 2003 07:01 AMThis is gaining traction. In my own hometown paper (which is quite pro-war):
Headline Page 1
"Weapons evidence falls short"
Headline Page 2
"Cleric promotes jihad against US"
and on page 4
"Afghan bomb strikes peacekeepers"
Yup, that "War on Tarah" is going along quite swimmingly. I feel safer now, how about you?
Posted by steve at June 7, 2003 07:49 AMDoes anyone else see a correlation to when Bob Graham started speaking out, hammering the admin on the 9/11 report and Iraq WMD, and this recent rebellion by the intell community? I, for one, think this nation owes him a great debt of gratitude...
Anyway, I think that we're a very, very far way from impeachment. Remember, the GOP has a hammer lock on the congress. Do you really think that Delay would let articles of impeachment get out of the House Judiciary Committee, much less come before the entire HoR, or even clear the HoR? Neither do I believe that there is a realistic possibility that we could find 60 votes in the Senate. Hell, we wouldn't get all of the Democrats votes.
I think we may see a very prominent firing though - best candidates are Tenet or Bolton.
Posted by Expo at June 7, 2003 07:50 AMSteve,
I think the next piece of research that would aid this effort is to align the Billmon quotes as of Oct 10, 2002, when both the House and Senate passed Public Law 107-243, with several whereas clauses referring to Iraq's continuing possession and accumulation of substantial chem and bio weapons, efforts to acquire a nuc capacity, danger to the US from those Iraq weapons, and members of al Qaida "known" to be in Iraq. Put those together with the public CIA, DIA and other govt agency materials, and any info on what members were told in official briefings before voting. The spooks are CYAing, the brass will be the next, but at some point the Congress members are going to have to answer "what did they know and when did they know it"? The intel committee folks like Graham were pretty clearly misled by Tenet's whitewash, but are being circumspect because of the classification issue. Ordinary members that were (if the were in fact) misled are not so constrained. So, if a John Dingell, hopefully joined by a senior respected Repub, stands up and says, "this is what we knew from the Exec branch, and they knew and withheld info that would have changed my vote, and we insist on a complete airing", then we're off an running!!
Btw, the same should be asked of every major newspaper that editorialized in support of the war--what did they know, and what was withheld as of that date? Would it have mattered? Why or why not?
Posted by alf at June 7, 2003 08:48 AMIf this explodes nationally, and the GOP Congress refuses to act, they're =all= screwed. We may see people finally wake up and realize how we've been duped.
That this won't go away is an excellent sign.

It was like this during the Watergate years as well. As the evidence continued to pile up, and people like John Dean had to clear their consciences, and finally the courts ordering the release of the actual tapes, thus fell Nixon.
Sure, it's early yet, but the signs are beginning to show. Even DeLay can't stop a flood tide.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Back then the GOP had integrity.
Posted by MattS at June 7, 2003 01:30 PMIt is nice to see all of this coming out. I think that the white paper must have been the reason that this piece showed up in early October.
I think that if there is enough stink, and enough military people start to question this (as they are beginning to), there are some Senators on the Republican side that will do the right thing. The big problem for the Bush crew is that they really did sell the congress on the idea that there was an imminent threat. The Senators have their own egos and they are not going to like being made fools of by the bullying WH. I think that if this keeps simmering, some of the Republicans are going get their own backbone.
I also think if the Dems don't at least ask for some accounting, they will be never be seen as credible again. They don't need to say that Bush lied, all they have to do is to say we need to have an accounting so we don't have another "intelligence failure".
BTW: Graham has been pointing this out since at least last December. Here is a radio show (audio clip) where he talked about the problem with classified info that needed to be made public so decisions could be made with good information.
Posted by Mary at June 7, 2003 01:47 PMLet's remember one thing about Watergate. It took a long time for info to come out. Judge Sirica had convicted felons in custody and he threatened to put them away for a long time if they didn't talk. Most important, it wasn't until Butterfield let slip that there were recordings that the thing came to a head. And as I remember it, everyone including the Dems were hesitant to destroy a presidency.
Of course, the Repugs had no hesitation at trying to destroy Clinton's presidency.
But an awful lot of people including lots of the press have a lot invested in Bush's presidency. While I am surprised they have pursued it this far, it is a big mistake to put too much on this. The hate radio crowd are out in force calling this hatred of Bush on the left.
Last night on Charlie Rose, he asked Eric Alterman, in effect, if the ends didn't justify the means. I don't see a lot of outrage on this.
Perhaps as important are questions of if it was so important that we couldn't wait 60 or 90 more days for UN inspectors to look for the stuff, why are we being told, not asked, to be patient with the Admin? If the stuff existed, arn't we in a worse position than we were before the war. We now have NO idea where it is or in whose hands.
These are the slipperyest and most arrogant people who have ever been in charge of the gov't. You have to be prepared to go at them from all different angles.
Posted by Hobson at June 7, 2003 02:11 PMDuring Watergate you didn't have 24-hour cable news driving things. The media will turn on Bush soon if they think it's in their best interest. Check out Drudge right now. Four of his headlines are WMD stories. That's a good sign.
Posted by Susan at June 7, 2003 02:47 PMYes most of the GOP had integrity back in the 70s. That's why I would like them to stick with the pres this time, even when the public sees that they're wrong. Then let's see the whole lot of them walk the plank. I'm having such an optimistic day, but really this could, if all goes right, lead to not just the head of W, but a thorough house cleaning.
Posted by MrHappy at June 7, 2003 02:59 PMThe media will turn on Bush soon if they think it's in their best interest.
Agreed, but the Dems have to get up front on this or the controversy angle dissipates quickly.
if all goes right, lead to not just the head of W, but a thorough house cleaning.
We can but hope!
Posted by pessimist at June 7, 2003 03:12 PMThe Clinton impeachment lowered the bar on high crimes and misdemeanors so low that any firm evidence that the administration manipulated intelligence to fit policy will make it very uncomfortable for congressional republicans. For God's sake. They tried to throw the man out of office for lying about an affair!
