Comments: The Terror of the Unforeseen

On your question of will it be 'good sense' or 'it happened here' - it will depend a whole lot on who is writing the history. If our native Americans had a written history tradition, would not Custer's Last Stand be seen as a great victory by 'The People' over a foreign terrorist who dared to attack the secured homeland?

As one old enough to remember those times, my first reaction is that it could not have happened - but after mulling it through, and remembering deep seated feelings of people I knew at the time, I now admit it could have been possible.
As only one example, I now recollect my own German-descendant father (born in Indiana, bred in Ohio), bent over the radio, religiously and regularly listening to Father Coughlin.

Of course it can happen here! Forgetting that is one of the ways it does happen.

As someone who spent some growing up years in a small town in the south, which was dominated by Southern Baptists, I am having nightmares that are grounded in fact.

It isn't the Jews who will be our canary in the coalmine this century. It is the gays and lesbians who will be the first, though not the last, to be vilified, marginalized, and ultimately, if this religious trend continues, "sent to camp."

I know some will scoff. "Please, these are religious people...nobody is talking about killing anyone...morals are good..."

Wake up and read some history. The only part that is hard to believe that you only have to go back sixty years or so for some hard lessons. The Nazis only had 30% of the popular vote, yet they managed to take over Germany in a short time.

What will be our "fire in the Reichstag?" Thanks to Bush & Co's attitude towards immigration, border security, and international cooperation, they won't even have to rig an "incident." The terrorists will do it for them.

After all, I figure their "incompetence" is actually deliberate. They see another attack as something that will drive more people into their camp...so why not let it happen?
