Portland, Oregon billed the Bush/Cheney campaign too, for any visits that were not open to the public, like private fundraisers. There was a massive amout of security needed for his visits. The last I heard B/C 04 had no intention of paying it.
The city also planned to bill the Kerry campaign for any visits closed to the public, and K/E said they would pay it.
The local paper hasn't updated this story since it first came up in May, so I have no idea what ended up getting billed and paid.
Those Republicans sure are special, ain't they? *cough*

Someone needs to post the photo of Bush trying to squeeze past Clinton through a doorway at the opening of Clinton's Presidential Library on Thursday. It's a natural for a "You Cap It" post.
Chris Anderson has it up over at Interesting Times.

Posted by barbara at November 19, 2004 09:12 PMCan you refuse to provide security without money up front, or just refuse, period? What would happen if you said "I am sorry, but we do not have the manpower or the money to provide you with security. Perhaps you should provide your own security".
Posted by Judith at November 19, 2004 10:13 PMIf I understand the process, the Secret Service only protects POTUS. Everyone else would be subject to the tender mercies of whatever vile non-invited pest who attempts to interfere with the political process without local police protection.
