I still have a LOT of trouble understanding how this administration avoided its day of reckoning in November. But that reckoning will come.
Period.

Now, if you'll adapt A Christmas Carol and have Dick Nixon as the ghost of Jacob Marley, my evening will be complete. Thinking of No Child Left behind and it's effects on children, you can include this statement from the Ghost of Christmas Present, "This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased."

Edgy:
When out in Mosul there arose such a clatter,
Another Iraqi turned soldiers to splatter.
Men spoke not a word, but went straight to their work,
And stilled all the mockings, protecting that jerk!
It's not just good men doing nothing. It is smart men convincing good men that they don't have to do anything.
The energy that goes into covering up for this admin is astounding.
Posted by spocko at December 24, 2004 09:06 PMWow such wit....
Only fucking liberals could use the festive season as another excuse to have a dig at the Iraq war. You really are the saddest people on Earth. I hope the next time there's a terrorist bombing in the states, all of you pricks are the ones who get shredded. Besides the poetic justice of it, it'd show the rest of us how doormat lefties would view muslim terrorists then.
Have a shitty christmas and a crappy new year scum!!!

Yeah, the war is going so well. Only a liberal could find fault with it.
Posted by Matt Davis at December 24, 2004 10:24 PMTime for the airing of grievances. Ricardo, I've got a problem with you! Get a sense of humor! Nice post, pessimist.
For the rest, Happy Festivus, and Happy Holidays and Happy Kwanza and belatedly Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas, too, to all.

My daughter snorts cocaine on her job with the other workers--she gleefully informed me last night on the way to a Xmas eve party. She's a kid..
Is this the future of the USA? Coking on the job?
Posted by BushHater at December 25, 2004 05:21 AMPessimist, great post...do you mind if I send it along to others that would appreciate it?
Brian, thanks for the Festivus reference with the airing of the grievances...I got a problem with you Ricardo, and this is how you have disappointed me this year.....wishing ill of others and coming here swearing up a storm this day, how very "Christian" and morally righteous of you....and you complain we are the ones who are taking the Christ out of Christmas
Anyway...
Peace....good will toward all....even those who are filled with spite and hate.

From the "Morals" crowd no less would be expected.
30In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
Much as in this parable, we liberals truly are the Samaritans. We don't always get it right, but we care, and we try to do the correct things towards others. It's because that's what peple are supposed to do for each other.
We here care about the troops deeply. That there is war and some will die is a given in our society. None the less, we care about these people enough to point out the deep failure of this administration to care about the troops at any level, from their families to their safety.
In the spirit of fellowship and good cheer, I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and health and prosperity in the year to come.
To all of you here, thank you for the best present I could have received. Your active and fertile minds have been a joy for me to experience. Your wit and wisdom have been a place of refuge for me during the last few months. I hope you all realize how essential you are to the salvation of this nation, and the power you have as a force for the good this nation can do.
More than once during the last election, a reporter would make reference to political blogs and incldue a quote that would be exactly as one of you had written. You people are like communing with Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay as they write the Federalist Papers. How exciting! How incredibly exciting, indeed!
Merry Christmas!

Posted by smith9898 at December 25, 2004 10:57 AMSlurp....lick...wipe... yeah great posts!!!
Philipides,
You think liberals are samaritans??? You side up with who your co-bloggers and whichever leftist daily newsroll you clap your fins on, says it's right for you to side up with.... You never get it right, you always pick the side of the most brutal criminal side, at the expense of "the other" who you dislike for simply being "better off" or a democracy ....
eg: palestines good---israelis bad, iraqis good --- Coalition bad, crack-dealing gangsters who've never had a job apart from dealing and hits (who've been doing it since they were teens because hip-hop says it's okay to act like thugs, blow each others heads off, deal, by obnoxious to white people, and giving descent black people a bad reputation by smaller minded racists) good --- the police who get tough to stop them at any cost and the mayor who calls for these tactics to be used , as well as the judges who send them to prison....bad. Ring any bells???
So whats right about these choices really, the Iraqis fair enough , if your aparent sympathy was balanced for both parties, but you praise suicide bombers (what was that the other day phil... they had it coming, nice to see you have so much respect for your countrymen.... well hows about the abused gitmo prisoners.... did they have it coming too??? Thought not???) you praise foreign insurgents and iraqi sunnis trying to keep the current war going, cause a civil war, and stop any kind of constructive conclusion to this war being reached. The shias and non-muslim iraqis are sat around waiting for the elections, they fear the coalition forces leaving, and they're happy with the developments and the fall of Saddam.... it's the war-mongering jihadists that they hate. I wonder have any of you actually taken any time to listen to what actual Iraqis have to say other than those that your favourite liberal-leaning newspapers quote... there are plenty that see the "occupation" as a positive thing.
Oh and to the above twat who said go to Iraq or whatever....
HOW DO YOU KNOW I'M NOT THERE???

Posted by Judith at December 25, 2004 04:29 PMMental instability seems to run rapid here among some bloggers. I suggest that such bloggers seek mental help through one of the fast disappearing social programs. One should be very careful wishing ill on others, as more often than not, that wish returns to the sender.
Posted by Judith at December 25, 2004 04:44 PMlittle ricky, was it ok for saddam to kill all those iranians? cause we knew he was doing it and didn't try to stop him.
is king fahd on our side? how about pooty-poot? is freedom "on the march" in russia? are the pakistanis a major force against nuclear proliferation? is kuwait freer than france and germany? or do you just love all of Dear Leader's friends no questions asked? (this is the definition of a cult, btw) should we accept that the president knows what he's doing cause he comes from such a good family?
and keep your head down, soldier. i'm truly sorry you're risking your life for a lie.
Posted by benjoya at December 25, 2004 08:38 PMbtw, half-mile from ground zero here. if the presidential election had been held on septermber 12, 2001, bush still would have lost new york.

When the primary way to get your message out is thru the mainstream media, and they are more concerned with making a buck, and fear pissing off BushCo, if the message isn't in lockstep with the White House, it has about a snowball's chance in hell of getting out to your average, too-busy-to-pay-much-attention-to-politics person. Progressives have a great, inclusive message, but when "liberal" has become a dirty word, thanks to the likes of Limbaugh's and Coulter's screaming, the message won't get heard. Pick up the book
"The Republican Noise Machine : Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy"
by David Brock if you don't believe me
As far as anyone thinking Bush is the devil: George's policies have murdered more people than Saddam's did; in fact, didn't the CIA install Saddam and give him arms?....hmmm
Posted by Sharon at December 26, 2004 06:53 AMHOW DO YOU KNOW I'M NOT THERE???
Well, I don't. The thing is, if you were there you wouldn't have the ability to post to this blog without obtaining permission first, and having it go through censors second. The delay allows me to deduce you are not.
You also seem to be the kind of person who would stick your head up when told to keep it down. Those people don't last long in Iraq.
You never get it right, you always pick the side of the most brutal criminal side, at the expense of "the other"
Look, your steam of consciousness writing is a big pain in the ass to decipher. You sound like you're schizophrenic. Break your thoughts into chunks, use capitals, and explain what the hell you are talking about.
Talk about brutality...how about that Abu Ghraib...bah rump pump. I do not tolerate brutality in any sphere, that's why I do not support the idiot son of George Bush and his mis-administration.
From the rest of your post, it seems you have compartmentalized your world into "goods" and "bads" as concrete and immutable entities, and you have allowed absolutely no room for an examination of causality.
As for gang behavior, and gangs have been around forever, if you talk to gang members from the 60's, they tell you that they would join gangs and then leave them when they got old enough to get jobs. Following republi-con cuts in jobs training programs, and republi-con tax code changes that made it beneficial to move business out of these areas, we have a huge problem with people staying in gangs because there is little else to attract them.
but you praise suicide bombers
You are a real fuck for saying these kinds of things. You take the obviously poor mis-administration of this "war" and blame it on me because in your compartmentalized world you view the idiot son of George Bush is "right," ergo, all others are "wrong." Then you assign cause for being wrong.
The blood of these troops is on your hands. It is truly your fault because of your poodle-like wagging and drooling over the isoGB.
you praise foreign insurgents and iraqi sunnis trying to keep the current war going
Nope. But I did have the foresight to see what Iraq was going to devolve to as soon as the idiot son and Rummy ignored the joint chiefs and went in under-manned and under-supplied. I have never supported this American incursion in Iraq. We had too much left to accomplish in Afghanistan. When we went to Iraq, I supported troops at the level the joint chiefs indicated.
If you were a military planner, and you told Bush they must have 250,000 ground forces --at a minimum, you would have been forced to retire or frozen in rank. That's the way your pack of loons in Washington has done it. How the hell can any sane and rational person support these morons?
I wonder have any of you actually taken any time to listen to what actual Iraqis have to say other than those that your favourite liberal-leaning newspapers quote... there are plenty that see the "occupation" as a positive thing.
About 80% of Iraqis see us as occupiers, not liberators. Think it could be something to do with the permanent bases we are building?
Just to let you know, since this impacts you, we are there because of what those mankey English gits did with their “British Mandate” in the first third of the start of the last century. The English fucks attempted to micro-manage the Middle East as part of their dying empire (and how the hell could a group of people who didn’t understand oral hygiene run an empire in the first place) and subjugated these people in a horrific fashion. Few remember the concentration camps the English employed in Iraq during this time period. The grinding poverty and feudal rulers we now have are all a result of English fuckheads. Much as with the French and their colonial Vietnam, we are now dealing with the aftermath of England’s incompetence.
Well put phidipides.
