I wonder if the Times is even aware of just how loaded a term it used. Women's political rebellion is often characterized sexually, and vice versa, so the use of the word "tart," which carries connotations of "whore" is especially disconcerting. While tart's original meaning is "defiant," it has evolved into a double entendre.
I suppose we should be grateful they didn't use the word "shrill," "shrewish" or "bitchy," but their word choice was poor, nonetheless.
Tee hee! This is great. Is tart now equivalent to "hysterical"? I think the Times meant to imply meretriciousness ---as in "Barbara Boxer whored herself out to the Left-wing kooks in the House today."
Thanks for the laugh, Steve.
Posted by Toby Petzold at January 6, 2005 06:15 PMToby, Boxer has more balls than you'll ever have and you know it... By the way, you must finally be ready to voluntarily join the fight over in Iraq...especially since things are really heating up. Hey I figure if Kerry can go over there, a brave, pompous, righteous, blowha...err... I mean man like yourself certainly can handle it, right?
Take this "tart" and shove it Toby and NY Times. NYT.
Posted by emal at January 6, 2005 07:00 PMHow about A Gigolo Partisan Protest, led by Tom Delay today.... I wrote to the NYT and let them know just what I thought.
Posted by Judith at January 6, 2005 07:43 PMToby, do you live in Austin?
Posted by Joe at January 6, 2005 08:18 PMAmazing arrogance.
Posted by Deborah White at January 6, 2005 08:33 PMIt's futile to write to Okrent.
Posted by Barbara at January 6, 2005 08:44 PMWhat about the trashed punch card votes that Greg Palast wrote about?--What about the 155,000 provisional ballots in Ohio? Then there is the matter of the high profile obstructionism of Secretary of State Blackwell. The recount in Ohio has still not been accomplished; and it's January 6th! We all saw the images of Ohioans standing in line for hours to try and cast a vote. Something is rotten in the State of Ohio. Maybe the Democrats should have run Barbara Boxer for President.
After the election there were rationales floated around the Web, to explain why John Kerry conceeded the result so quickly; in spite of the fact that the result was contradicted by exit polls, and also in the face of floods of reports of irregularities and the absurdly long lines of people who were'nt provided with enough voting machines to tally their votes in time. This is just an outrage.
Only last night I checked my e-mail and there was a message from the Kerry/Edwards people saying, in effect, that Kerry was not going to challenge the Ohio electors in the House today. So nice of him to inform all of us about this at the last possible moment. We are asked to telephone Speaker Hastert and Senator Frist and protest the debacle to them. This is such an unseemly end. Apparently we are all expected to pretend that the Republicans have'nt stolen another election. Well it was quite a touching ceremony in the House today. Just bow in the general direction of Diebold and Triad Systems.
Posted by Copeland at January 6, 2005 08:46 PMas in "Barbara Boxer whored herself out to the Left-wing kooks
Boxer does not deserve to be treated and spoken about as republi-cons and evangelicals treat and speak of their wives and daughters.
A tart partisan protest?
Any protest is very welcome. Good on Senator Boxer.
Posted by phidpides at January 6, 2005 10:20 PMToby - you really do have problems- honest!
I did indeed write to Okrent this morning - and yesterday I sent congrats and thanks and roses to Boxer.
Posted by Dorothy M. Ligon at January 7, 2005 05:41 AMI doubt we'd be in Iraq if women were in charge. "Tart" indeed.

A small group of slatternly-eyed naysayers transformed the traditionally male ritual of certifying presidential election results into a tart partisan protest today, forcing both the House and Senate to debate Election Day voting problems in Ohio, home of the Republic's illustrious 29th President Warren G. Harding.Posted by obelus at January 7, 2005 07:15 AM"I have concluded that objecting to the electoral votes from Ohio is the only immediate way to bring these issues to light," Ms. Boxer chin-wagged in a letter to Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio.
But when the Senate voted this afternoon on the challenge to the Ohio result, after a session lasting just over an hour, Madam Boxer stood alone, with 74 other senators rejecting it.
Bush won by 118,000 votes in Ohio, according Diebold Corp., and by more than 3 million votes nationwide.
Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman, dismissed the Democrat's move. "Now, now, Barbara" he said, "it's alright. Gentlemen, stand back and give the lady some air."

Sorry for the double post thingy.
Posted by obelus at January 7, 2005 07:23 AMThat was like reading a Harlequin Romance (strong man with a name like "Stone" giving smelling salts to "Rose")
But her name's "Boxer" so no wonder she's a fighter...thank GOD!
Given what Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray witnessed in Washington State, why did they not support Barbara Boxer?
Posted by lorraine at January 7, 2005 09:18 AMI thott HA! The WaPo would have a great story today, coverage, you know, like newspapers should, of the historic challenge Boxer proposed yesterday on the vote crap. I bought a WaPo and there ain't ONE word about this...I was shocked.
Naaaddaaa....one of the reasons I stop subscribing to the rag but I wanted something to keep. We're all so GUILELESS!
Posted by Mal Feasance at January 7, 2005 05:08 PMNot one word on CBS nightly news either. We have been totally shut out of the mainstream media.
