Alastair Campbell's future in Downing Street was the subject of increasing speculation last night after he came under strong criticism from the foreign affairs select committee and was the butt of a rare joke by Gordon Brown.

Other fiascos, such as the Government reshuffle, have led to the impression that Mr Campbell is no longer focusing as he was. He will give no hint of his intentions until it suits him to do so but yesterday merely added to the impression that he will leave sooner rather than later.
