Yeah, they get what they deserve because they voted for him. But do they have to take us down along with them?
Posted by Muons at February 13, 2005 11:14 PMMoreover, how ironic that those veterans would shun a real war veteran and instead choose a man with zero courage, who essentially dodged the draft? Did they really believe GWB understood what they had gone through and why they deserve those benefits?
Posted by thebull at February 14, 2005 04:37 AMMore GOP vs. GOP . Special GOP Valentines edition I guess...Rraowrr! Let's sit back and pass the popcorn.
Posted by emal at February 14, 2005 06:38 AMThe Americal Legion and VFW were never friendly toward the Vietnam Vets. They've recently warmed-up a bit because their organizations can't survive w/o younger members.
Posted by Rich at February 14, 2005 07:09 AMWe'll see how the final budget looks. I bet nothing like what Bush submitted. It's just a bargaining chip. First salvo in negotiations for Social Security Choice.
Posted by muckdog at February 14, 2005 07:55 AMFirst salvo in negotiations for Social Security Choice.
in case you didn't notice, lord fauntleroy has been salvoing for a few weeks now, and seems to be losing support for privatization in his own party, never mind the dems.
Posted by benjoya at February 14, 2005 08:14 AMRed staters are now getting exactly what they voted for, so, too bad...so sad. Screw you.
Posted by roamer at February 14, 2005 08:22 AMdid i say "privatization"? I meant "phase-out" or "replacing social security with a private pension system"
Posted by benjoya at February 14, 2005 08:32 AMIf I understand the Constitution correctly, then if Bush is too intransigent, then Congress can try to muster a two thirds majority (unlikely but possible) and pass its own budget which would go into effect after the two thirds overrode his veto.
Posted by rlprather at February 14, 2005 08:45 AMGood news. Social Security Choice is optional. You can remain in the current system.
So, whatcha complainin' about?
Posted by muckdog at February 14, 2005 08:47 AMmuck, haven't you got this week's memo? there is no plan. the pres now says he'll wait to see what congress comes up with (buck-buck-bkaw!)
Posted by benjoya at February 14, 2005 09:07 AMWell Mucky-Muck, we're complainin' about your fucked up ideas to kill our country. Duh...
Posted by Paul at February 14, 2005 09:16 AMWell, over 70% of Americans now own homes. The total stock market is up over 50% since the 2002 bear market ended; the DOW is shouting distance from a new all-time high. Unemployment is down at 5.2%, about "full employment" according to the Fed. And GDP is around 3-4%, strong enough so that the Fed is raising short-term interest rates.
Americans vote their pocketbooks. That's why Bush won in 2004. Reality is quite different from the distorted beer goggles you've got strapped on, mah frend.
Posted by muckdog at February 14, 2005 10:30 AMstrong enough so that the Fed is raising short-term interest rates.
Oops. The idiot son has gotta borrow some more money. Wish the Chinese and Japanese had more confidence. Then rates wouldn't have to go up. Damn, and those rates go up just as the first ARMs of this housing "boom" get ready to be "adjusted."
And think of all the borrowers who are heading into their retirements with no savings, no pension, and a big ole McMansion and mortgage to go along with it. A new phenomena of folks who borrowed their way through the last 3 shitty years of this economy.
Unemployment at 5.2% indicates people have lost the benefit and aren't on the rolls. But for those who did get a job, thank god Wal-Mart is hiring. Those with jobs at Wally Land get lessons on how to get welfare because their pay is so shitty. GM is seeing health costs increase by $2 billion this year. I know. It's my fault for not putting on rose-colored glasses and saying "Iz all good."
And that GDP. Well, GDP is calculated as domestic spending + exports - imports. Here is the big rub. Ya know how we exported all those jobs? Well guess what. When those services and goods are reimported someone forgot to count them as an import. Why, India reports huge exports to the U.S., but it doesn't show up in our GDP for some, shall we say, odd reason. GDP is really up about 2.2%. You then factor in an accounting method other countries don't use to calculate GDP...our real GDP appears to be 0, possibly even very slightly negative.
I'm sorry...I should have put on my rose-colored glasses. GDP is up 492-twelve-dy zillion percentile-ages since just yesterday alone. Things are just fine.
Americans vote their pocketbooks.
No. They voted Terra and anti-gay constitutional ammendment. They seem to be voting with their pocketbooks now. Poor idiot son.
I am a veterian (by choice) and a resident of a red state (NOT by choice) and I never voted for Bush. I feel for my brother veterians; yeah they are stupid for voting for the scrub, but still they are being betrayed by a deserter.
Posted by Don quixote at February 14, 2005 11:19 AMWell, over 70% of Americans now own homes.
Does anyone know the current foreclosure rate? And how many of those homes were sold with no downpayment?

Posted by Don quixote at February 14, 2005 11:20 AMYou have to go through editorial gymnastics to dis the GDP and Unemployment numbers. LOL. I bet you didn't do that when Clinton had GDP at 3-4% and unemployment at 5%. Everything was fine then. But under Bush, then it sucks.
You're too blinded by partisanship and hatred, son. Your editorializing of the economic numbers is biased.
Posted by muckdog at February 14, 2005 11:26 AMUnemployment is at 5.2%...which does not include the 4.4 million who are working part time but want full time work.
Unemployment is at 5.2%...and employement to population ration is 62.4%. In 2000 it was 64.5%, which means a lot of people are not even bothering to look for work.
If the same number of people are employed and the pool of people looking for work gets smaller, unemployment rate will look to improve.
Posted by reddy108 at February 14, 2005 12:01 PMLike I said earlier, they can loose the farm and their veterans benefits, but they can comfort themselves with their indignant self-righteousness that they kept gays from marrying and having abortions.
Maybe their evangelical friends will show them some Christian charity and help them out.
Posted by The Real Joe at February 14, 2005 01:03 PMWell well well....I told the wannabe republicans within the Bush ranks, "if he gets elected again he will reveal his true self". Now with the Gannon/Guckert debacle, $9 Billion missing "enron-style", and a domestic social and infrastructure killer of a budget...I guess yall can finally see the horns. Man I love being correct!....although this time it is bitter-sweet because now we all have too clean up this mess!
