It's too bad the voter can't call for a mulligan and re-do the last election.
Posted by rlprather at March 20, 2005 01:51 PMObviously the voters in Ohio had no idea what they were doing by voting for Bush. We should have let Congress step in and throw out enough votes for Kerry to win.
Posted by bushsucks at March 20, 2005 02:06 PMHearing this about Harkin makes me think more of leaving the Democratic party entirely and supporting a third party. What ethical justification is there for Harkin to opt for expediency and self-interest on this issue? And then ditto for ME when I vote for a Democrat who is similarly comprised. (Viz., Casey in Pennsylvania.)
The other alternative (seriously): France is looking better and better. No, France and the French are in no way holier than thou, but they haven't betrayed most of the things that make me happy to be an American. I can support values and work for the good of people everywhere without having to give my time and effort to people who are prepared to jettison principles for expediency's sake WHEN ACCESS TO POWER is the issue.
Besides, I love the French language, French culture, and the south.
There's just nothing better than a sanctimonious post that's full of shit. Harkin's involvement is regrettable only if you fail to appreciate that Senate Dems are trying to derail the House Republican's version of this legislation, which makes the Schiavo case not a one-shot law, but an all-encompassing no-right-to-die law.
But then again, nobody here cares about the real-world effects of laws, or about doing whatever we can to stop these people from destroying our country. No, much better to throw the Dems under the bus at every opportunity, so we can all feel good about ourselves.
Finally, if you knew what the fuck you were talking about you'd know that Harking is probably not going to run again.
Pull your head out of your asses over here.
Posted by Iowa Boy at March 20, 2005 03:10 PMWhat should the Dems have done? SAY "WE ARE NOT GETTING INVOLVED WITH THIS- THIS IS NOT A GOVERMENT ISSUE" - Yet these stupid stupid dems DO get involved. The dems are so stupid they deserve to lose and lose - which they are. by the way - I voted dem all my life but I have given up on these idiots!
Posted by jj at March 20, 2005 03:46 PMGood on you for using the words 'hypocritical thugs' when describing the current leaders of the Repubs!

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Bush v. Gore was a "one-shot" decision. Tell me again how I should be comforted by that.
But then again, nobody here cares about the real-world effects of laws, or about doing whatever we can to stop these people from destroying our country.
I suggest that I'm starting to have doubts about who "these people" are.
Finally, if you knew what the fuck you were talking about you'd know that Harking is probably not going to run again.
Probably? Then he's hedging or really thinks what he's doing is justifiable.
Posted by Merle at March 20, 2005 04:48 PMThis law stands approximately a snowball's chance in hell of withstanding Supreme Court review. If supporting this stupid law forestalls the even stupider no-right-to-die law, I guess that's good, especially since Dems can then blame the activist, Republican-appointed Court.
But can't Congress get back to important stuff, like steroids in baseball?
Posted by Matt Davis at March 20, 2005 05:42 PMFrance is looking better and better.
I've liked every European I've ever met. It's the education thing.
And the Euopeans celebrate the Iraq War 2 year anniversary in quite a different way.
Posted by phidipides at March 20, 2005 06:54 PMI thought the question portion of Cohen's q-and-a were hilarious. Is it possible that Cohen wrote those himself?
Posted by JD at March 20, 2005 07:20 PMI was thinking tonight about the hypocrisy of the Republicans in the Schiavo case. Then I remembered a poem I had read not long ago, and thought I would post it. To all the phony Republicans who display concern for Schiavo, but let children die everyday without any concern.
A Prayer for Children
Ina J. Hughes
(an American school teacher),
Adapted by James Steyer
We pray for children
who sneak popsicles before supper,
who erase holes in math workbooks
who throw tantrums in the grocery store and pick at
their food,
who like ghost stories,
who can never find their shoes.
And we pray for those
who stare at photographers from behind barbed wire,
who can’t bound down the street in a new pair of sneakers,
who are born in places we wouldn’t be caught dead in,
who never go to the circus,
who live in an X-rated world.
We pray for children
who sleep with the dog and bury the goldfish,
who bring us sticky kisses and fistfuls of dandelions,
who get visits from the tooth fairy,
who hug us in a hurry and forget their lunch money.
And we pray for those
who never get dessert,
who have no safe blanket to drag behind them,
who watch their parents watch them die,
who can’t find any bread to steal,
who don’t have any rooms to clean up,
whose pictures aren’t on anybody’s dresser,
whose monsters are real.
We pray for children
who spend all their allowance before Tuesday,
who shove dirty clothes under the bed and never rinse
out the tub,
who don’t like to be kissed in front of the carpool,
who squirm in church or temple and scream in the phone,
whose tears we sometimes laugh at and
whose smiles can make us cry.
And we pray for those
whose nightmares come in the daytime,
who will eat anything,
who have never seen a dentist,
who aren’t spoiled by anybody,
who go to bed hungry and cry themselves to sleep,
who live and move, but have no being.
We pray for children who want to be carried
and for those who must,
for those we never give up on and
for those who don’t get a second chance,
for those we smother…
and for those who will grab the hand of anybody kind
enough to offer it.

A Republi-con Prayer
By: Ima Whore
I pray for money, and lots of it.
I prey on the old and the sick, and love it!
Gimme some money, I need more of it.
You don't like it?
Well buddy, just shove it!
Your a poet. Good job.
