Comments: Even After Bolton Is Shown To Be Abusive Of Intelligence Analysts, Lincoln Chafee Will Still Vote For Him

I knew he'd cave. There's a very old joke about liberal Republicans that would apply to him....a man fell overborad and was drowning 50 feet away from the boat, Lincoln Chafee (in past tellings it would have been someone like Nelson Rockefeller) threw him a 30 foot rope. When asked why he made such an inadequate gesture. The response was "well, I went more than half way".

His constituents need to tell him that this kind of "gesture" isn't enough.

I really wish Chafee was a Dem so I could hate him.

Posted by Loyal lefty at April 12, 2005 01:49 PM

Chafee's probably toast anyway, isn't he?

That senate seat will be blue as of November next year. Chafee's history. If I were him, I would not even consider running again.

Steve Soto,

Question...When was Hormel turned down as an ambassador? He was Clinton's Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1999. (does it really get any better than ambassador to Luxembourg)'

Please state the ambassadorship you are speaking of.

Chaffee is spineless. He did not vote for king george, instead vote for his Daddy. Why did he bother to mention it! But now, would vote for Bolton because george and condi ask him! It does not make any sense.

Posted by not stupid at April 12, 2005 03:33 PM

Bigdog, you are correct; my memory was that the Senate Republicans fought against Hormel's appointment, but in fact as you indicate he was appointed after opposition. I will correct my post accordingly.

Steve Soto,

If I knew how to post an article (if possible) I would. I found one in the Wall Street Urinal (Available online at http://www.opinionjournal.com/best/?id=110006544

I find it to be the humor that we all need in such tough times.

good day

Georgie Porgie must love the fact that all his nominations are passed with flying colors. I wish Democrats would stick together like the Republicans do.

Posted by Judith at April 12, 2005 06:00 PM

Judith, the Republicans stick together because their jobs demand it. Democrats still think they can be elected fairly, so they try to represent their constituents.

Posted by T2 at April 12, 2005 06:12 PM

It is time for the Dems to do what is necessary to unseat Chafee in the next election by starting early, and working hard.

The few 'moderate' Repubs left in office are so concerned about organized conservative pograms against them that they will even offend their constituents if needed, and are surely not afraid of a Dem. opponent because the Dems are so weak.

Let's make them afraid by whipping some butts electorally and ensuring votes on our side from blue state officeholders when outrages such as the bankruptcy bill, Bolton confirmation, and Social Security, etc. are before the Congress.

Hormel finally was appointed ambassador to Luxembourg by Clinton in a recess appointment after being stalled by the Senate because of his sexual orientation.

Bolton is a rage! Note that his nomination hearings are held the same week Hotel Rwanda comes out in DVD. A movie that illustrates just how weird the UN is. Friggin' bastards stood by and let the massacre happen. If he's confirmed, will we know any difference from the present standard? Won't make a jot of difference. I remember when the UN was meant to bring PEACE after WW2. The UN is nothing but bidness, corporate bidness...always has been, and with Bolton, will quickly fade. It's a different world, y'all. The poor and downtrodden will remain poor and downtrodden and IGNORED, while Sharon and Shithead meet at the ranch and plan the world's destruction. What's the UN good for? Bidness....Butche's bidness!

T2, I just watched 40 minutes of Frontline and then turned the TV off. Karl Rove: The Architect was enraging. I hope every Democrat watched this story, because if ever there was a clear plan on how to destroy the Democrats, this story laid it out in detail. Attack, attack, attack, and go not after the weaknesses, but their strengths, i.e., Max Cleland, John McCain and John Kerry on there military history. Same thing with Tort Reform. Go after the financial supporters of the Democratic Party (strength). It is fucking amazing that it is all there for Frontline to do a story, and yet some are still sleeping with the enemy.

Chaffee is spineless. He did not vote for king george, instead vote for his Daddy. Why did he bother to mention it! But now, would vote for Bolton because george and condi ask him! It does not make any sense. But tonight I saw on NBC 10 RI. I saw Chafee saying that it was only 1 story, and he was still leaning to vote Bolton to the post. Biden did read about the other who had also mentioned others involvement with Bolton rage. I guess Chafee does not listen as well as George Allen Va, Morgan Coleman FL, Mel Martinez FL, Dick Lugar Ind.
At this point, I am so mad but feel that if he elected we will never regain respect from the world and when he open his nasty mouth nobody will believe him as they are watching all of this on TV. American politicians were able to pull their crap because of the difficulty to have access to what they were doing. It is not happening anymore. When Bush start calling other countries part of his call “ the Ax of Evil” King george create a lot more that his little square mind could ever understand. He only was looking for re-election, but unleashed more that this country will be able to absorb. The hatred this administration has created will never be able to be fixed. The Chinese will take us down faster than anybody think. They are creating an army that will be better equipped than ours as we are paying to much for all our great military corporation‘s corruption. (Remember the Bradley tank scandal in the early 60’s!) They are now slowly growing as we are going down the drain. When they are ready, and with all the Chinese in America, who does not mingle with us, are getting in control here I know because I did work over 10 years with a lot of them.
The war is going to cost more that we already have to pay up to now. The equipments are deteriorating faster because of the weather. Those have to be replaced.
Yesterday and today, both Samarra (77 Mile north of Bagdad) and Baaqouba (37mile north) has been the site of manifestations. They were, composed mostly of students and religious, asking for the withdrawn of coalition’s troops.
Where are our great “talking heads”.

The good news, is that the people of Rhode Island are paying attention. Chafee noted that his staff phone lines were flooded with calls from consitutents about this, with the overwhelming number asking him to vote "no." And the DSCC and I'm sure Whitehouse and Brown have been paying attention. I dont blame him, he has an R in front of his name, he is following orders. It's a shame we will have to kick him out of office now. Oh, well, start cutting the ads!
