History is replete with instances of how unchecked, majority rule has led to devastating consequences.
Especially with regards to tax hikes. Tax hikes should require supermajorities, otherwise the masses will figure out that all they have to do to get more entitlements is to tax a small percentage of folks who lack representation.

Posted by bigdog at April 20, 2005 10:35 AMI don't get it. Supermajorities are OK for tax legislation but not OK for the Constitutionally mandated 'advise and concent' role of the Congress?
Such confimations should require supermajorities, otherwise the majority will figure out that all they have to do to get more conservative judges is to cater to a small percentage of folks who lack economic regulation.
We've had tax increases instituted by recent Republican and Democratic presidents and the results have been consistently better, much better, than under the supply side tax cutting regime of Bush Jr. But this is a discussion for another day.
Pessimist, you are correct that it would be hypocritical to support a supermajority for tax bills and somehow not support it for something that is even more critical to the future of the country - a non-corrupt, non-extremist, non-radical judiciary.

Muck, serious question here: Are you suggesting that 1. We, (meaning the Left,) would simply 'tax the rich' whom you're lableing "a small percentage of folks," and if so, 2. are you actually then suggesting that these "folks" LACK REPRESENTATION?!?!?!?!?!
Again, not trying to be combattive; just trying to clarify what you're saying. If You're suggesting that the super-rich who would get taxed to 'get entitlements' to the masses "lack representation," you're FAR more delusional than I ever thought.

I don't remember ever telling you to shut up! Oh well your a typical hypocrit...Oh well your good at it...at least that is something to hang your hat on.
Posted by bigdog at April 20, 2005 05:03 PMHarry Reid recently noted that in most national lesislatures the upper house, which in the U.S. is the Senate, has a filibuster. As the natioal legislature is the last line against immoral and inhumane laws the filibuster should remain. The risk of blocking some good laws is the price of protecting against bad laws. It's a trade I will happily make.
