I would never buy another TIME magazine again. Hope many cancel their subscriptions. I had to take a Losec after I saw that issue!
Posted by whisper at April 20, 2005 11:08 PMWhy anyone would pay real (and ever more dear) cash to be lied to is beyond me. There is so much information to be found at the expenditure of time and effort which has little if any ideological slant (unlike Time) that it makes no sense to me to merely accept the drivel that we are provided as 'news and information'.
Americans should be loudly proclaiming that we will no longer accept swine cast before pearls.
Posted by pessimist at April 21, 2005 12:33 AMI thought we had already given a lifetime appointment to that honorary post to none other than Judith Miller-Chalabi for her defense of her warmongering reporting:
"We worked our asses off to get that story," she said. "No one leaked anything to us. I reported what I knew at the time. I wish I were omniscient. I wish I were God and had all the information I had needed. But I'm not God and I don't know. All I can rely on is what people tell me. That's all any investigative reporter can do. And if you find out that it's not true, you go back and write that. You just keep chipping away at an assertion until you find out what stands up."
And the give undersecretary role to our monkey president
Posted by ItAintEazy at April 21, 2005 02:29 AMReporters need not be fact checkers. Welcome to 21st century journalism.
Posted by rlprather at April 21, 2005 04:09 AMReporters not fact-checking is kinda sleazy. I vote Time put Guckert/Gannon on their cover. No need to send out a photographer, just grab one of his choice pictures off the internet. Put the magazines in a brown paper cover with the other sleaze magazines at the bookstore. Maybe Playboy wouldn't want to keep such company though; they at least are honest in what they're selling.
Posted by Sharon at April 21, 2005 04:30 AMFluff Boy? That implies some detatchment from subject. From what I've read by Cloud implies that he fellated her to a degree that even Monica must be jealous.
Posted by idiosynchronic at April 21, 2005 04:44 AMI understand that our media have gotten so bad partially because of corporate takeover, but with CJR's interview with Cloud and the dismal performance and attitude of younger media reporters one has to question the quality of our educational system overall and journalism training in particular.
Posted by Barbara at April 21, 2005 06:18 AMItAintEazy,
Miller's sins are far worse, so she gets not just an Honorary Position, but the post of Editor. I wanted to mention the "President is not a fact-checker" stuff, but I didn't - so I'm glad you provided a link to it :-)
Pessimist,
You are right...one of the things progressives need to do far more effectively is reach out to rank-and-file Americans to point out how they are being bamboozled by the media on a daily basis. When I talk about media reform we can discuss this some more.
Whisper,
I am glad I cancelled my subscription about 1+ year ago since I got fed up with the uncritical coverage in Time in general.
