Not a chance!
I'd wager 'personal accounts' comes out of his mouth within the first 10 sentences....sratch that it's to hard to identify sentences when he speaks...within the first 5 minutes.
Posted by muckcat at April 28, 2005 12:52 PMOwwur Leeder does not produce solutions! His strategy is to stay in power by creating problems for ordinary folks, so that they will be busy solving them and will have no energy left to get rid of him and his cronies.
By the way, have a look at "Hail to the Robber Baron?" article at:

Posted by Jonathan at April 28, 2005 01:01 PMPresident Bush, unable to convince Democrats of the historical long-term 10% annual returns of the total stock market index, has found a way to get Democratic support. Workers will have the option to invest their Social Security money in the total stock market index, or buy Lottery tickets. While most conservatives are expected to invest in the stodgy stock market index, many Democrats are believed to favor the higher returns offered by the Lottery.
Most Democrats believe, Lottery tickets are more of a "sure thing" than the risky stock market. As one Democrat on the hill said, requesting anonymity , "Who wants to invest in an index fund, when companies like Enron are in there? At least with the Lottery, you can pick the numbers you like. Lucky number 7 never lets you down. Lucky number 7 isn't run by a corrupt CEO. Lucky number 7 isn't screwing with people's monthly energy bills."
A bipartisan agreement is expected shortly.
Posted by muckdog at April 28, 2005 01:03 PMTook the words out of my mouth...NOT A CHANCE...This man is so steeped in dishonesty he simply cannot be what those of us from the reality based world know as TRUTHFUL.
Posted by Oleary25 at April 28, 2005 01:15 PMDimSon's deliberate inattention to more pressing problems will be the political death of him. Period.
Posted by roamer at April 28, 2005 01:19 PMThere is speculation on Tapped that the press conference is a ruse to announce they got Osama or some such thing.
But to me it is plausible that this rube wants to try to lord it over on social security and his judges. His ego seems to know no bounds. There is *never* a truly new idea from these guys, just new marketing of tired old ones.
Posted by dcspeculator at April 28, 2005 01:23 PMThey'll never catch Osama. Goldstein in Orwell's "1984" was never meant to be caught either.
Posted by roamer at April 28, 2005 01:46 PMdcspeculator is right. Watch him repackage personal accounts by using code words and a new language for the same old tired ideas. He wants personal accounts period. He has never never been known to backdown, even in the face of the truth or public opinion. As much as I cannot stand to hear or see Bush, I will be watching tonight. I'm not interested in what he has to say as much as I am in what questions the reporters ask. I wonder if he has gotten a replacement for Gannon.
Looks like DeLay has new problems as reported by NBC. He's toast along with Bolton. Boy, am I happy to see the worm turn even if slowly.
Posted by Judith at April 28, 2005 01:49 PMI cant wait to hear what he has to say...but it does not matter what he says in this blog because no matter what he comes up with the vast majority of you will hate it because it is a Republican Idea.
I have an idea. Rather than ripping it to shreds immediatly, everyone take 15 minutes and come up with their own solution to the problem. Not just the solvency problem, but the lack of return problem. I feel this will make for interesting debate.
Steve, I'm counting on you to come up with something great that we can discuss for quite sometime.
Posted by bigdog at April 28, 2005 02:16 PMJust remember what Bush told Rangel the other day.
"Congressman, I am the president. And private accounts are not coming off the table even if it's the last day I spend in the presidency.""Private Accounts" will be there.
I read that Bush is going to announce that OBL is dead.
Trump!
Actually, can you imagine that happening? It would pretty much take the cake.
Posted by Toby Petzold at April 28, 2005 02:29 PMToby, NOTHING this man can do will redeem him in my eyes. Worst President Ever. Most corrupt and incompetant administration yet.
Have you heard of the TV show 'The Sopranos' by any chance? There are plenty of replacements while there is the motives for profits, power, or vengenance. They go on while Gottti and Capone went down.
I hope you keep arguing here. Steve, et al should have you well enlightened before senility truly sets in...
His 'old bases for new refineries' is even being ridiculed by folks in the industry. They would rather expand existing than build ground up.
And you don't find fissionable Uranium everywhere. I suppose we could make a few more fast-breeder reactors. But don't they make Plutonium?
(Quick idea, tax breaks for installing LED lighting)
$70 billion in Tax breaks and $10 billion cut in medicare.
Reminds me of the movie...
"Members of the Roman Senate, what say you of the poor?"
"F*** the poor!" (or something like that with apologies to Mel Brooks)

Posted by NeoSerf at April 28, 2005 03:02 PMVery little on personal accounts. Lot's on his benefit cut disguised as more than today's seniors get. No specifics at all.
Posted by MacMan at April 28, 2005 03:25 PMHere's a transcript of Bush's opening statement
Not much new. No discussion of how transition to private accounts would be funded.
Love the "benefits equal to or greater than current retirees" schtick.
Didn't see it though. Turn off the TV week.

Yep. That's all it would take to herald in a new Golden Age. Yutz.
Posted by Toby Petzold at April 28, 2005 06:43 PMWhat the hell is a Yutz? You mean Putz?
Replace every traffic signal with LEDs and every streetlight, and it adds up quickly.
Or do you seem to think convervation is "a nice personal value but not realistic"?
We do not have enough Platinum to have fuel-cells for all. So where do you suggest we even start?
I take it you are not old enough to remember waiting in line for gas in the 70's?
The Brits seem to fare paying $5+ for a gallon. How well do you think we shall do here?
And don't call me names tolo....

You're anonymous. It's clear you don't even value your own name enough to use it, so why should I respect your wishes?
Posted by Toby Petzold at April 28, 2005 07:12 PMPoint taken. Not hard to find out who anyone is on the internet once you know where to look. Was bedeutet ein Name?
Steve has pulled several of my posts, perhaps he should do so in this case as well.
But my question is still posed despite my invective.
What shall we do to replace or supplement our energy needs?
From what I have read we cannot replace all cars on the planet with fuel-cells or electric vehicles.
If you have some theories on abiotic oil, I would love to hear them.
My suggestion was to collect the Methane Hydrates. While it can be readily used to replace gas for vehicles, should we?
Posted by NeoSerf at April 28, 2005 07:44 PMtoby, toby, toby . . . had a dog by that name and then he died and my parents started calling me that . . . toby. don't you have anything better than the name card?
bigdog,
Why presume that any Democrat hates the idea just because it is derived from Republicans?
Could Democrats not appreciate the idea because it does not address the solvency issue in any manner instead?
Why the silly straw man argument? You presume Democrats cannot address the argument based on its validity, when that is exactly what they are doing. It is up to the President and the Republicans to make a valid point about solvency past 2041 (or 2052 according to CBO), which at present they have yet to do.
And that, sir, is why the plan is crumbling not just with the public, but within the Republican party itself.
Posted by MisterOpus1 at April 29, 2005 05:51 AMI was not saying Dems in general Mr. O. I was talking about those on at this site that hate everything a Repub does just because it was done by a Repub. It happens on both sides and I know that.
I just want people to take an objective look at things rather than immediately saying it stinks because of who's idea it is. It happens, and it was by no means a shot on anyone specifically. Sorry if it confused anybody, those were not my intentions.
Posted by bigdog at April 29, 2005 11:52 AMBigdog: If one understands the belief system of a group of people, and vehemently disagrees with it, then it is natural to dismiss anything they say. It serves no purpose for me to listen to Bush or some of his followers, because I know fairly well what they stand for and their agenda.
I can be objective when the person who is speaking is someone respected and is known for being objective also, whether Republican or Democrat.
Judith,
You refute yourself in your last post. He's the president, people should always listen to the president when he speaks even if you don't like him as a person.
Its kind of like a football team you support. Even when they suck (like the cleveland browns) you still have to watch them on Sunday's and hope that something will turn out right for them. I'm always rooting for the Jersey, not the people wearing the Jersey.
