Comments: "Pro-Life" Fakery on the Pharmacy Front

are these pharmacists dispensing Viagra to their single male customers? the last I heard, sex outside of marriage was a serious no-no to most religious folk.

I'm a lawyer. It would be really nice to be able to tell the federal judge who assigns me my next pro bono case for some convict who didn't like his dental care in prison that I am morally opposed to representing felons. However, I know what the judge's response to my objection would be: "Well, counsel, you don't have to take this case. Of course, you don't have to practice law in this district anymore either."

I bet 100% of those who oppose the morning after pill are Catholics.

Great, exactly what everyone needs...MORE GOVERNMENT.

Isn't the ACLJ that goon squad funded by Pat Robertson to go around strong arming school districts into allowing local cultists to enact some Far-right, twisted aganda? Sort of like the mob, except they're carrying bibles instead of shotguns.

Anyway, I really do not have sympathy for pharmacists who oppose giving out birth control on religous grounds, and then get fired for it. If you have a problem with giving someone Birth Control who has a legal prescription, then do everybody a favor...find a new profession. Sort of like a Prohibitionist working at a 7-11 and refusing to sell beer to anybody because its against their "Moral Beliefs".

You're paid to dispense to medicines, not moral judgements. Same goes to the cashier of my local CVS, who gives me the "Tisk, Tisk" look should God forbid I buy an issue of Maxim. Just ring it up and stop asking me if I want that stupid CVS card.

Boy, I bet you loathe the way the idiot son of George Bush has grown government more than any other president. It's gotta be tough, what with wanting smaller government and having this moron make it bigger. I feel your pain.

While these wingnut pharmacists may only be a minor inconvenience to those of us living in areas with a drug store on every corner, these moralistic pill counters may be the only pharmacy within miles of many rural women. Finding another pharmacy may involve a drive of 50 miles or more. Pharmacies should be regulated like hospitals – required to treat all the sick and injured regardless of race, religion, economic status, or lifestyle. Stores like Wal-Mart should not be allowed to pick and choose which medications they will dispense – you either dispense all legal drugs or you don’t open a pharmacy.

Excellent example.

I have never heard of a pharmacy refusing to sell "rubbers" to men, have you? I'd say we have a double standard here.

Above post by me.

Please don't group all pharmacies and pharmacists into this. This is a classic example of a few bad apples ruining the whole bunch. I am soon to be a pharmacist and do not support the actions of these pharmacists.

There are also pharmacist positions available (at assisted living or nursing homes) where no birth control ever need be dispensed. Pharmacists with tender prolife consciences can have those jobs.

Mike,

I'm *not* grouping all pharmacists into this. I said clearly that "The petitioning pharmacists and the ACLJ bring disgrace ..."

Jessie,

The ACLJ is lying about the rule--it doesn't require individuals dispense. In fact, a pharmacy may choose not to carry a drug at all. The rule only requires that a pharmacy dispense drugs they carry, return a prescription they don't carry to a patient or pass it on to a pharmacy that does.

The rule is far more limited than people understand and the law doesn't apply to individual pharmacists, but pharmacies. Details here:

This whole business comes from the fundamentalist, both Protestant and Catholic. Basically they hate free women and the most effective way to subordinate women as indidividuals and as a class is to force them to bear children against their will. If they can accomplish this they need have no fear of women working in high-paying or prominent areas, going out alone at night, or doing ANYTHING to harm the fetus. (take a look at the laws about crimes on the "unborn".) This is noe of the few instances where it makes sense to put all your eggs in one basket, pun intended.
