Comments: GOP Senators Plan One More Attempt To Sell Private Accounts - By Paying For Them With Trust Fund Surpluses

This won't work. But nutjobs like Santorum and DeMint will never give up. As long as the Republicans control the Senate, they'll be back again and again.

I have to assume that this plan is designed to make the Bush "plan" look ingenious by comparison.

The neocons in the White House have a worldview based on the philosophy of Ayn Rand. They regard people who depend on social security, welfare, VA disability compensation, medicare and medicaid as social parasites. They want to increase the national debt to the extent that funding these government programs will become impossible. They regard themselves as the "elect", the "ubermenchen". I think the war in Iraq is merely a diversion from their economic agenda as well as another way to spend down whatever is left of our nation's financial resources. Bush and his cronies must be impeached ASAP.

We need to remain vigilant until these people have stakes in their hearts. Bush has a 25% approval rating for his Social Security plans right now - and any Republican who proposes altering SS should be hounded from office. 2006, it can't come too soon.

...except that they spliced it together with Old Testament tribal-style religion (which they call "Christianity"). I'm just surprised that we don't see more cranial explosions from the strain of trying to hold these two ideologies in their brains at once.

I'll send money to the first democrat in congress who stands up and yells, "There is no money in those accounts, the idiot son of George Bush stole it all and sent it to Iraq. We want accountability, Mr. Idiot President."

This thing will only end with unconditional surrender. This is nearest and dearest to the heart of the blackguard. Like the Bourbons in 18th century France, they will never get it.

Ultimatly THIS and things like this is why the filibuster compromise, rotten as it may seem to some, was the only winning move for the Democrats. If they had succeeding in killing the filibuster, it would have been gone forever. And not just for appeals court judges, Cheney would have continually made chair rulings that the filibuster didn't apply to anything.

Sure, supreme court appointments will likely come up before 2007, and the nuclear option will likely be brought up again, but Bush is heading for the 30's in popularity. The momentiun the radical right had is gone forever and soon the rats will start jumping ship. Time heals all wounds.

Look, 2006 will pesent a good chance to retake the house. That would give house Dems. the authority to investigate everything. The corporate media will not be able to ignore congressional hearings. The senate will likely take until 2008 to gain because in '06 the Dems. will have to win 24 out of 33 senate races to retake control. But a one or two senate seat net gain in '06 would be nice.

America IS waking up. There's still three and a half years of danger ahead but, it's beginning to look like what has been called the 50/50 nation is becoming 55/45 or even more the good way. Stay tuned.

guess I'm confused . . . isn't that the same funds that Bush told the country is just some ol' paper IOU's that the government won't pay back?

Posted by gail davis at June 18, 2005 08:47 AM

Yup Gail, that would be them.

Uhm...when you take the money away ...PRESTO! there's more there!

Or...

NOT.

Karl must have some collection of Polaroids.

Maybe chimpy found the infamous file cabinet where he said they were stuffed.

That's why it's so important that we put all those IOUs into private accounts now, before anybody realizes they aren't worth anything. Hopefully, nobody will see the fine print:

VOID. This is not a real Treasury bond. Actual cash value .01 cents.

It works great at my local bank, when I deposit phony checks that I 'won' in sweepstakes solicitations from the mail.

I'll send them money even if they don't yell and don't use the wrord "idiot." though i'd prefer that they did.

" Time heals all wounds."

True, riprather. And time wounds all heels. ;-)

Drowning men, grasping at straws. SS scam is dead. People already figured out the truth. And their attention is on the horrid mess in Iraq, so Karl will trot W. out for a speech on Iraq.......the usual b.s. Then, watch it, when he goes from 42% to 43%, the Media will trumpet "Bush on the Rebound", "Bush Bounces Back", "Bush Approval Skyrockets". But, I think Oz may be out from behind the curtain.

rlprather...you've hit the nail on the head....this guy is finished and now we get to watch the "1000 cuts" finish....momentiun the radical right had is gone forever, seeming to leave during the Schiavo foolery! Had the filibuster been lost, thse guys would have rammed untold slanted legislation down our throats and fixed it so they always win...

The snowball of "throw da bums out" is coming down the hill...there has to be a passel of potential whistleblowers who'll come forward once the stuff hits the fan.......hallelujah...I feel like a shipwreck survivor!!!

This is where we must become ruthless. When we regain the ability to cunduct hearings, the White House should be one empty, lonely place with everybody testifying up on the hill 27/7.

Whats that you say? We need the president unburdened to fight the global war on a descriptive noun? Didn't seem to bother the wingnuts while they were in their Clenis frenzy.

Plus I rather think the war on a descriptive noun could be bettter run by a gerbil in a pink tu-tu. Sure as hell couldn't be run any worse.

blue jean,

Good point and thanks for sharing your family history on the Salem witch trials. It adds a lot towards showing that the face of hysteria hasn't changed through the centuries.

Goyo,

Pick your battles. Washington won by knowing when to retreat. There's a 21st century Yorktown coming, and as the numbers change , again the bluecoats will defeat the redcoats.

According to tonight's ABC news, they're actually going to go through with proposing that the supposidly "worthless" IOU's to fund private accounts. Forget about a straw, this is the telephone pole that may well break the camel's back on public debt finiancing.
