Its neat to live in a country that goes all out to get OJ Simpson for murdering 2 people, yet they seem uninterested in getting a traitor that is responsible for the deaths of what will be over 4000 US soldiers. Mind boggling, Rove is worse than OJ. Bush is worse than Carter. Start the draft, we have a war to win.
Posted by Professional Progressive at August 3, 2005 10:50 PMBush thinks in black and white. Everybody else thinks in 24-bit color. Ergo Bush is the one who slammed the brakes on and ordered a return to the Global War on Terror meme, probably because he already understands the talking points and can say it without spitting on himself, or on the top of Condi's head.
Posted by Novak at August 3, 2005 10:53 PMLet's call it the "Global Struggle with Language in the War on the Truth."
Posted by Jesusland Joe at August 4, 2005 05:47 AMThe Bush advisors' problem comes from their assumptions about "the evolution of Bush's thinking." Not possible! Bush has no
thoughts that evolve. They're the same today
as they were four years ago! Words like
"evolve" and "evolution" are totally
foreign to him.
IF the Glorious Leader was even given the "new name" memo, he forgot about it immediately (what with that short term memory problem). Or he didn't understand it to begin with.
But seriously, what Bush actually says appears to be meaningless as a reflection of administration policy. I don't think he knows or remembers anything that comes out of his mouth, and he is certainly never forced to acknowledge his endless howling inconsistencies and flip flops.
Posted by euzoius at August 4, 2005 06:34 AMWar on Terror is easier to remember than the longer phrase. That is why Bush likes it.
Posted by T2 at August 4, 2005 07:09 AMGlobal Struggle Against Violent Extreemists.
GSAVE
They moved away from it when Karl Rove pointed out that it could alternatively stand for;
Greater Sensitivity Awareness of Violent Extreemists.
Posted by at August 4, 2005 07:17 AMTwo things: First, Global Struggle sounded too much like a Communist slogan. Can't have that! Second, it sounds like the empty suit actually tried to assert himself on something other than the punctuality of those atending his briefings. They spoke in his name and he didn't get it. So he over-ruled them. Not to worry--they don't tell'm most of the stuff they do anyway. This one happened to hit the press. (Oh! Wait! He doesn't read newspapers! OK, it must have been reported on Fox News...)

Bush thinks?
The Bush advisors' problem comes from their assumptions about "the evolution of Bush's thinking." Not possible! Bush has no thoughts that evolve.
Exactly!
He might not be drinking, but it's still the booze talking.
Posted by buck turgidson at August 4, 2005 07:42 AMHere's a golden oldie ... "the Global War on Weapons-related Program Activities."
Posted by Jim Faith at August 4, 2005 08:03 AMas Andy Card so memorably said three years ago, "From a marketing standpoint, you don't roll out a new product in August..."
Posted by Rai at August 4, 2005 08:56 AMClearly, the change was Intelligently Designed, as distinct from being a product of Evolution.
Posted by Informed Thought at August 4, 2005 09:01 AMAnd lastly, will Eric Schmitt and Thom Shanker of the New York Times go back and burn their sources who fed them the original crap that the new language "reflects the evolution in Bush's own thinking"?
LOL, rhetorical question?
Apparently, there is no tipping point with some people when it comes to the lies of GWB & his people. This crap of earnestly trumpeting Bush's "evolving" thoughts as if it were true is about to make my head explode. In a similar vein, I've been trying to read those pod people who have been squatting at Steve Clemon's place & I haven't seen this much denial since we were berated by the likes of this ilk for not taking the Iraq WMD threat seriously.
The neocons are out! The pragmatists are in! Bush realizes that he can't go it alone! It's Clinton's fault! Clinton disdained the UN worse than Bush/Bolton! Republicans who supported Bolton are heroes because they scolded him! Bolton isn't really a train wreck! St. Condi will fire Bolton's ass if he gets out of line!* St. Condi is in charge! St. Condi is competent!
[Apparently every scoop shovelled at us for the past 4 years in which the insiders told us St. Powell had vanquished the neocons & would save the world are being recycled for St. Condi.]
These opinions would be laughable if things weren't so dire. I gather from the tone of some of these pronouncements that I should be impressed with these pods' expertise & contacts, but I'm still trying to understand why I can be hanging out in god forsaken Indiana & know that the whole cabal(including Mrs. Condi Bush) are greedy, incompetent liars! I know this, the NYT & these pod people, do not.
Next week, the NYT will act as if GSAVE never happened. The whole unfortunate incident will vanish down a sink hole never to be spoken of again except by shrill lefty bloggers who don't realize that we are at war & global struggles are for sissy flip floppers.
Also next week, Elizabeth Bumiller will loving transcribe a bit of whimsy consisting of various anonymous sources lauding Bush for not only figuring out how to repair the space shuttle, but for secretly flying up there himself to fix it. The bold rescue plan was almost put in jeopardy, however, when a British Airways pilot saw jet fighter pilot & Vietnam war hero Bush at the helm of AF1 streaking across the skies towards Discovery.
*This is not a joke. Some people are gullible enough to actually believe this.
Totally OT but don't you wonder if there is a link between NASA's problems & the Bush admin's disdain for science?
Posted by Hoosiercat at August 4, 2005 09:10 AMI think the reason for the change is actually much simpler. Wouldn't it be proper to label one who bombs an abortion clinic or shoots an abortion provider a "violent extremist"?
No wait, I stand corrected, their views and actions are not extremist to the Republican Party--they are mainstream.
Dang...thought I had it figured out. ;-)
Posted by Dale at August 4, 2005 01:39 PMIf the declared war was over, would the War Powers Act have figured in now? Or would he still have had some time on the clock?
Posted by Snarkmaster at August 4, 2005 02:05 PMI thought he claimed "Mission Accomplished"?
Posted by Jesusland Joe at August 4, 2005 02:59 PMWar on Terror is easier to remember than the longer phrase. That is why Bush likes it.
And why Karl Rove likes it -- it's easier for everyone to remember, and for the media to regurgitate consistently.
Posted by Doug at August 4, 2005 03:07 PMPlus, it probably didn't help that "struggle" translates into "jihad"...
As others have noted elsewhere, it also translates into German as "Kampf," evoking the title of a certain book written by a certain someone...
I typed in "Who else thinks that Bush is incompetent?" on Google and this blog was first on the long list of hits. Jolly good read. Keep up the good work.
