Comments: "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll"

The Stones recorded that song, but they didn't write it.

You're right. It's a Motown song, first recorded by the Temptations who made it a huge hit.

T2 - fixed - thanks. Guess with the Stones I should have known better than not to check further on the credit.

If I were the Stones, I'd decide to go AWOL and play in the parking lot for free while the suits were inside.

If you check out Liberal Street Fighter (sorry my link isn't currently working) there's a new Stones song that is anti-Bush. Maybe they'll play that one for Arnie.

Stones have a new song about Neo Cons. You'll probably like it.

The Stones' version is deliciously raved up, and Mick does nice work on it.

But really, David Ruffin (lead vocal) put his mark on that song. Not Mick. Mick is imitating David Ruffin and taking it a bit more up-tempo. I mean, that IS The Temptations' song above all others.

Also, it's actually written by Norman Whitfield and Eddie Holland, of famed Motown writing/producing/hit-making team Holland/Dozier/Holland, who wrote gobs and gobs of hits (more than 25 top 10) including most of the Supremes' best work. Holland wrote the words, Whitfield the music and Whitfield produced it. Whitfield was also responsible for Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."

To attribute the quote from the Stones is just wrong. And I love the Stones.

That song is pure Motown.

Brian -- a little creative license on my part. Sort of like Billmon naming his joint "Whiskey Bar" based on the recording by The Doors. (I heard Lotte Lenya singing it everytime I went there until one day Billmon added The Doors attribution. He corrected it to Brecht, and there was no need to include Kurt Weill as the composer since only the title and lyrics are used. But I'll bet Billmon still only hears The Doors in his head.) The Stones have lifted lots of songs that many associate with them. And the point of my piece wasn't the creativity of the Stones.
