The FIXER has been positioned. But how can McCallum control a duly appointed Grand Jury? Can he just squash it? Any move, at this point, to put the Fitz investigation and Grand Jury in a can will be an admission that Bush himself, and/or Cheney, are involved in this traitorous scheme. The rest of the Senior Admin. Officials are dispensable.

Posted by pessimist at August 12, 2005 10:51 AMMcCallum's appointment is only temporary so far, much depends on the permanent confirmation (or convenient recess appointment) of Timothy "Torture" Flanigan to Comey's post. Flanigan is reportedly quite compromised, too, with regard to overseeing Fitzgerald. Why prominent Democrats are not loudly and publicly questioning him on this during the confirmation process I do not know.
Posted by firedoglake at August 12, 2005 11:15 AMIIRC, comey is fitzgerald's higher-up only in the latter's position of US Attorney. I thought comey (or now McCallum) don't have anything to do with fitz's role in the plame investigation.

From AP (via the Post) we learn that Comey appointed somebody else within the DoJ to oversee Fitz and the Plame investigation:
David Margolis, a lawyer at the Justice Department for 40 years, was named Friday to oversee a special prosecutor's investigation of who in the Bush administration disclosed the name of an undercover CIA officer.
Margolis, whose title is associate deputy attorney general, is taking the place of Deputy Attorney General James Comey, whose last day of work was Friday. Comey will be Lockheed Martin's new general counsel.
Comey made the designation of Margolis. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has stepped aside from the probe because he was White House counsel when Valerie Plame's name was leaked in 2003 and he has testified to the grand jury investigating the unauthorized disclosure.

I wonder what the McCallum misfire was about?
Posted by dannydorko at August 12, 2005 03:33 PMDon't underestimate Fitz.
Posted by angel at August 13, 2005 09:10 AMThe worst thing the Bushies can do is fire Fitz. There won't because there cannot be much interference in his investigation. So, the question is, do the Bushies have the guts to perform something a'la Nixon's Saturday Night Massacre?
