In the "debate" about global warming, only this One Fact trumps all: we cannot afford to be wrong. Therefore, having no other worlds on which to live ---for the moment--- the only moral thing to do is act as though global warming were an ironclad fact.
What did Chief Seattle ---or one of those guys--- say? We don't own the Earth; the Earth owns us; it owns our asses like it were eminent domain the world over.

Of course it should not come to anyone's surprise that the "evidence" Bush has been using to support his position on Global Warming was based on bogus research. Once Bush finds something that agrees with his positiion - end of search. No attempt to verify need be made. Hasn't his entire tenure as "president" been hallmarked by that kind of incompetence and lie-based governance? short answer: yes.
The Ph.D's at the Centre for Science and Culture are now looking at the viability of bovine lunar excursions, and the possible relationship to Intelligent Design. Word is the cows are up for the noble cause.

Posted by Toby Petzold at August 12, 2005 12:58 PMI think there is a lot of money at stake by the merchants of global warming. But I agree with Faux Toby up there, and we should start building nuclear power plants immediately. Lets end this era of buring fossil fuels.
Cleaner air.
Cleaner water.
Less greenhouse emissions.
One of you lefties send the directive to the Sheehan crowd in Crawford to change their tshirts to say "Mr. President, Build More Nukular Power Plants!"

After he builds one in Crawford.
Posted by pessimist at August 12, 2005 02:07 PMHe'd make a mint selling the power to Dallas/Ft. Worth.
Which means he wouldn't do it - he does have a track record to maintain, y'know.

On a seperate thought, related to nuke power . . I'd been readin' up on the nuke weapons last week and was thinking, "How much enriched uranium (235) does a nuclear power plant have usually?" The slug gun in Little Boy was 60 kg, between the slug and the target rings. And how rich does the supercritical mass have to be (235/238 percentages) for a detonation?
The end result of this line of thought is - more nuclear power plants, the more chances for stealing enough U235 for a bomb. The processing to raise the 235 content may be prohibitive, but not as much as the aquisition.
I also stumbled across this tidbit - At the present use rate, there are 50 years left of low cost known uranium reserves.
Posted by idiosynchronic at August 12, 2005 02:56 PMSince Bush wouldn't know the "science" of it if it was 120 degrees for 4 months straight in Camp David, it's a mute point to expect any further thought on the matter (if that's what it can be called). He doesn't give a poop anyway, he thinks the second coming is going to happen in his lifetime and can't wait to get to Heaven.
"Long range" to this administration is 3 years, let's pray we all make it that long.
Posted by at August 12, 2005 09:54 PMI don't have the exact quote in front of me but I remember that Cal Thomas produced the first biblical evidence in support of global warming that I'd ever seen. He used several bible verses (some edited for impact) to explain that nowhere in the bible does it say we need leave the earth in tip-top shape at the second coming. Therefore, we can trash it. It's simple logic.

Yeah, our public life has gone back to the 19th century, why not our private lives too?
