Larry Johnson said today that he checked with his intell associates on Schaeffer back before this thing heated up and was told that Schaeffer's a flake that never met a molehill he couldn't make a mountain out of. The open source data mining they were allegedly doing is still somewhat primitive.
The freepers love this and are running with it as proof that Clinton could have stopped 9/11 and didn't (they have some complex conspiracy hypothesis for this). Perhaps it was an old POS sitting on a shelf collecting dust and RoveCo decided to dust it off to counteract Bush's plunging approval numbers. More likely Weldon merely needed to include something he considered explosive to sell his book and that got the attention of his good buddies and then the WH. (See Billmon for info on Weldon.)
Posted by Marie at August 23, 2005 12:18 AMSaudi Arabia?? Where the heck did that come from? Take off the tin foil hat please.
I can understand the knee jerk reaction to defend Mr. Clinton's record here but let's try and find out all the facts first. Personally, I think that anyone who tries to parse blame for 9/11 is an idiot. And that goes for Crazy Curt Weldon and any other Republican who thinks that's a political winner.
That said, after watching the National Geographic "Inside 9/11" last night, I'm mad enough at everyone who served in Washington in the last 15 years to fire all their asses and allow the 9/11 victims to sue them until they're in the poor house. That includes everyone - both Presidents, the CIA, FBI, and the smug, arrogant, overconfident weeners who all thought "it couldn't happen here."
As for Col. Shaffer's meeting with Republicans; this fellow feels a little exposed, don't you think? Once the Pentagon destructo machine gets into high gear against this guy, he's going to feel very lonely. I think it only natural that he seek out the only people who might be able to offer him a little bit of cover from the coming storm.
Posted by Rick Moran at August 23, 2005 12:35 AMfacts as we know them..9/11 happened on the frauds watch...the buck stops there..fact ..richard clarke did his best to warn them of the danger of bin laden..it was largely ignored...opinion..the iraqi war is evidence of incompetence by this administration as they have failed the american people by failing to protect them and making things worse after the fact...you cannot blame bill clinton for everything bad that ever happened in the world since the beginning of time..try as some may...gw is incompetent..is now and always was...never really accomplished anything in his life...but he sure does get an A+ for fucking up the war on terrorism
Posted by dennis at August 23, 2005 03:13 AMhistory will show 9/11 happened on the bush watch and that this illegal war was conducted then as well..major failures both..ya can't spin that...
Posted by dennis at August 23, 2005 03:40 AMI'm not so sure - didn't Hillary vote to authorize the war in Iraq [FY04 Emergency Supplemental for Iraq and Afghanistan; Bill S1689 ; vote number 2003-400 ] on Oct 17, 2003 after voting to authorize King George's Oil War [Bill H.J.RES.114 ; vote number 2002-237 on Oct 11, 2002]?
Could not the Bu$h (mi$)Admini$tration thus make the claim that, by aiding and abetting their war crimes, Hillary Clinton was responsible for the mess in Iraq? After all - if she was really doing her job, she would have stopped them!
She has to be that powerful - or else all the Republican propaganda being sent to me by my Good Orange County (CA) Republican friends is a fuming mass quantity of male bovine excrement!
Posted by pessimist at August 23, 2005 06:05 AMi stand corrected..it's not bill's fault...it's all hillary's...i should have known that..thanks
Posted by dennis at August 23, 2005 06:39 AM"Bin Laden determined to attack in United States". I believe that briefing was given to George W. Bush, not Bill Clinton. Further, loads of testimony exist that outgoing Clintonians implored the new Bush junta to get on AlQueda and Bin Laden immediately....but Bush was more interested in Saddam and the War on Drugs.

Don't forget the War on Taxes!
Posted by muckcat at August 23, 2005 06:58 AMHere's a great piece from Tuesday's New York Times.
Representative Weldon also arranged an interview on Monday with a former employee of a defense contractor who said he had helped create a chart in 2000 for the intelligence program that included Mr. Atta's photograph and name.
The former contractor, James D. Smith, said that Mr. Atta's name and photograph were obtained through a private researcher in California who was paid to gather the information from contacts in the Middle East. Mr. Smith said that he had retained a copy of the chart until last year and that it had been posted on his office wall at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He said it had become stuck to the wall and was impossible to remove when he switched jobs.
If I were him I'd have gone with "my dog ate the chart" but I'm a traditionalist.
This chart which would be direct evidence that Able Danger identified Atta in 2000 was in his possession until last year! And what did he do with it? Nothing apparently. And what became of this oh so relavatory chart? He left it behind when he chnaged jobs because he couldn't get it unstuck from the wall!
LOL!
This story is officially so wacked that one can't make heads or tails of it...perhaps that was the goal all along..disinformation, muddy the waters, coverup, sabotage of normally credible individual's so people trust no one????
Did I mention how much I hate being misled by people who actually do know the truth about these things but won't come clean.
The chart got stuck to the wall so I left it when I switched jobs... Weldon only had one copy of the same chart and he gave it away....aw come on boys, we aren't really supposed to believe those stories and coincidences are we??? Are we??? Damn you lying liars and the liars that perpetrate the lies.
