it was a conspiracy against Bush hatched in the 1700's
Posted by distributorcap at September 1, 2005 12:38 PMSteve,
I'd LOVE to believe that the GOP is going to collapse, but I will wait and see what happens first. Cynically, I believe that with most people there is an infinite reserve of energy for rafting up the river denial when it comes to the task of critical thinking, especially where support for Bush is involved. Look at how long and how bad things had to get regarding Iraq, the economy and other areas BEFORE Bush fell to his current level of approval in the polls. For all intents and purposes, Bush and the Republican party should have been in the toilet by now, but Bush still gets strong support from Republicans and some independents. I'm not sure if the images of the disaster in the Gulf region will make a dent in the public impression of Bush, but I'm pretty sure that record gasoline prices will sour more folks on the Commander-in-Thief. We will just have to wait and see.
Posted by Merlin1963 at September 1, 2005 12:46 PMSteve,
Clearly you do not read Elle, because otherwise you would know that Ferragamo's are the "in" showwear this Fall for hawking failed foriegn policy.
Besides Condi is foriegn affairs, not NSA anymore. The death and destruction of New Orleans clearly is not her department. The phone calls from foreign leaders and regarding aid relief and assistance will just have to wait until she's back from shopping at Jimmy Chu's.
Who says Americans don't take enough vacation?
Posted by Jason at September 1, 2005 12:50 PMSteve,

this is BEYOND belief......
WASHINGTON - House Speaker Dennis Hastert dropped a bombshell on flood-ravaged New Orleans on Thursday by suggesting that it isn’t sensible to rebuild the city.
"It doesn't make sense to me," Hastert told the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago in editions published today. "And it's a question that certainly we should ask."
Hastert's comments came as Congress cut short its summer recess and raced back to Washington to take up an emergency aid package expected to be $10 billion or more. Details of the legislation are still emerging, but it is expected to target critical items such as buses to evacuate the city, reinforcing existing flood protection and providing food and shelter for a growing population of refugees.
The Illinois Republican’s comments drew an immediate rebuke from Louisiana officials.
“That’s like saying we should shut down Los Angeles because it’s built in an earthquake zone,” former Sen. John Breaux, D-La., said. “Or like saying that after the Great Chicago fire of 1871, the U.S. government should have just abandoned the city.”
Hastert said that he supports an emergency bailout, but raised questions about a long-term rebuilding effort. As the most powerful voice in the Republican-controlled House, Hastert is in a position to block any legislation that he opposes.
"We help replace, we help relieve disaster," Hastert said. "But I think federal insurance and everything that goes along with it... we ought to take a second look at that."

It's not worth it. It's not worth the picture on CNN's home page right now of a dying, dehydrated toddler. No, it's not worth it.
Goddamn, I'm crying.

It's funny you should say that because it sounds like a very contrived counterexample to the eco-Left's argument that George W. Bush caused Katrina by not supporting Kyoto.
In the past few days, I have become reacquainted with the criminal stupidity of those around me.
Posted by Toby Petzold at September 1, 2005 05:32 PMToby, you're right. Bush's inaction in NO is criminal. It's a crime against humanity to have allowed countless survivors of Katrina to subsequently die of dehydration and exposure. In America. And, of course, you're more worried about a tv. Yep. Too stupid to live.
Posted by iamcoyote at September 1, 2005 05:54 PMThat shit hits $5/gallon you're gonna see some rioting.
Well the bad thing is, is the gas prices are going to hit $5.00+ a gallon. This is getting out of control. I can barely get done what i got to get done away from the house because of the gas prices. Were i live, the gas prices are...
My car doesn't drive right without useing Premium. (I guess b/c of the way my engine is made.) I have been having to use Regular cause i can't afford it, and i have a pretty good pay. i feel bad for the people that don't get paid as much as other. I can bearlu afford 1/2 tank of gas. My tank is a 15 gallon tank. It would take about 73.05 to fill up my tank. Back when the gas prices for premium was $2.05 a gallon, i filled up my tank for 30.75. Now i can only pay for half a tank of gas which cost about $36. That is a little more then when i could fill up my tank with premium instead of regular. It is out of control. These gas prices are making me broke.

Posted by at September 1, 2005 06:49 PMI quit smoking last week. It took (and will always take) a lot of will, but I did it. And because of that, I am improving my health and saving money.
Yesterday, I gave blood in a blood drive at my job. I was nervous because I had never given blood before, but I did it because it's the right thing to do.
If people want to, they can be prepared for the future by investing in it and being smart. They can lay the foundations right now if they are smart enough. But, if they are not, then they will fail and even die young. And it is right that they should because first things come first and savages who steal TVs in the middle of Hell on Earth deserve to die.
You people want the State to run your lives, but not this state. You want the one with universal this and automatic that. Everyone gets something but no one has to sacrifice.
I think the Government is doing a horrible job right now and I am plenty mad at them. But they can't help these people until people like you accept the necessity of killing looters on sight.
These savages are trying to break into children's hospitals and terrorizing the staffs. If they can't be put down like the rabid dogs they are, then nothing else matters. You simply have to accept the righteousness of order over chaos.
Posted by Toby Petzold at September 1, 2005 07:10 PMOMFG, I have no doubt you are on an FBI list somewhere, Toby. If not, you should be. Let me get this straight, because you give blood, people should die?
I've always wondered: do psychopaths know if they are psychopaths? Or do they think they're normal...
Posted by iamcoyote at September 1, 2005 07:17 PMYou people want the State to run your lives, but not this state. You want the one with universal this and automatic that. Everyone gets something but no one has to sacrifice.
Nope, that would be conservatives like you. "Shop til you drop" is the sacrifice that Bush asked in the wake of 9/11. We can run a war with tax cuts.
Toby you and your ilk always expect someone else to the work. You expect someone else to fight the wars and someone else to pay the bill. It's the Bush mantra. Take responsibility for your decisions and live with it: You rewarded incompetence.
iamcoyote:
And, of course, you're more worried about a tv.
Shitheadedness.
It isn't the TV; it's the "mind" of someone that chooses to walk around with a stolen TV in the middle of a colossal sewage farm that forces me to recognize that some people are simply too stupid to live.
Have you ever walked around a swamp with a 25" TV without dropping it? That would take a lot of physical strength. So, if you're taxing yourself in the middle of a place where there is no access to potable water and there is no access to basic food and there is no hope of surviving in such a cesspool, it is probably an evolutionary blessing that those who are burdened with such a brain are less likely to reproduce more such carriers of that particular strain of dumbass.
Posted by Toby Petzold at September 1, 2005 07:20 PMYou know what, ga6thdem? You're right to be critical of this President when he says to go on about your lives and spend some more money and do whatever else you like. Because it's stripped all the sense of sacrifice from the present struggles. People don't feel connected to what's being done in their names because they aren't feeling the crunch as much as they might.
So be it. I'll stop driving my car so much. I'll cut down on my electricity. I'll give more blood. I'll make a few charitable donations (not something I'm used to, but what the hell?).
If you don't like not sacrificing, then sacrifice. No one's stopping you from the fully authentic life, hippie.
Posted by Toby Petzold at September 1, 2005 07:25 PMSilly Toby. You really are warped aren't you? I'm about as far from a hippie as you could get. You buy into any stereotype that comes down the pike. Now I understand how you believed Sadaam hid his weapons in Syria and OBL was dead. No ability to look at the big picture and understand consequences.

Christ, Toby! We're not "around you." It's this illusion of proximity, created by "The Internet."
Also, because criminality requires a certain level of mental awareness, the dumber you are, the less criminal you can be. (An aside: generally, I would use "one" instead of "you," [my high school composition teachers were really tough about that stuff], but I really think talking directly to Toby about stupidity and criminality is important.)

Let's see Sis, you have no money, no transportation, no place to go to, no family to take you in...gee I'll just bunk up at the Superdome for a couple of days!
I know....they should have started swimming for Texas!!
there has been more shark spottings other then this. This is just the only one record that i can find.

And pray tell, what good would that do? NO is a city completely out of control. People are terrified and desperate. The stores will declare a total loss and recoup through insurance. The looters will probably never get out of NO and will most likely perish with their stolen merchandise. Getting upset over material possessions at a time like this is absurd.
Posted by ann at September 1, 2005 08:54 PMD.:
the dumber you are, the less criminal you can be.
Liberals always say things like that because they never grew up enough to accept that people have to be responsible for their own actions.
Thus, the mentality of the totalitarian groupie: since the smart run games on the dumb ---and since there are vastly more of the latter than the former--- then personal responsibility can be dispensed with because The Man owes us something and The Man is the reason why we can't get ahead in the first place.
The State as a Teat. Wonderful.

That's right. That's why that's not what I'm arguing here. These people are thieving things they cannot even begin to use or enjoy, but are such idiots that their first impulse is to expend energy taking things that cannot help them to survive.
They're fucking lab rats, taking smack over food.
But it's awfully [sensitive] of you to defend them to tycoon bullies like me.

Huh? And you believe in the survival of the least fit?
Judith, would you know what to do if Katrina was barreling towards your town? Wouldn't you be ready in some substantial way and find your way out of there?
Or would you be down in the canals, being authentic and ripping off The Man instead of saving your own life?
Apology not accepted.
Posted by Toby Petzold at September 1, 2005 09:37 PMToby, I'm not saying that I am defending the looters. Stealing is against the law. I'm saying it's pointless to get so tizzed over it. It's a smokescreen so we will focus on the "fucking lab rats" who don't deserve to be rescued. It's an excuse to kill people rather than deal with the situation. It's a chance to take the focus on the inept preparation and response of our Federal Government.
Gee, I didn't know you were a tycoon, Toby. Hope you made a big donation so you can get your tax dedcution.
Posted by ann at September 1, 2005 09:50 PMToby, first of all you are making a generalization about people. While there are those who were stealing, I bet you that the percentage was very low, and yet this is what you are focusing on (you and the media, that is). Instead, why don't you dwell on those who are poor and could not "plan" a way out. Do you really believe that people would stay knowing that Katrina was bearing down on them? When you have no money for a hotel/motel, no car, no way of leaving, then I find it distainful for you to say it's their fault. Yes, I would have planned and been out of NO immediately, However, my circumstances would have allowed me that luxury. "Just leave," is like Nancy Reagan's simplistic slogan of "just say no" to drugs. By-the-way, many people were also in hospitals and could not be moved.
Posted by Judith at September 1, 2005 10:45 PMOr would you be down in the canals, being authentic and ripping off The Man instead of saving your own life?...."ripping off the Man", Toby?
.....you're a prize Toby!!
At moments like these that I fail to see why anyone would respond to Toby...EVER.
Posted by Paul at September 1, 2005 11:50 PMSounds like Toby is simlilar to the conservatives around here who are basically advocating for the "final solution." Let's just turn on the gas in the superdome. Let's not even try to rescue these people. They deserve to die, according to conservatives, because after all they are just poor black people.
According to Toby's logic, making poor decisions are a reason to be gassed or left to die. Well, darn it, what are we going to do with Bush then? He has made poor decision after poor decision and people like Toby continue to make excuses for him.
Posted by Ga6thDem at September 2, 2005 04:48 AMUnable to declare a "war on hurricanes" and suck the tax-payer dry with plump anti-terror type contracts for his friends, the boy emperor decides to do the next best thing.

I'm sure for effect, rove told bush, "Let them suffer a bit, that'll teach them who to vote for next time. They'll surely know where that "teat" came from".
If people want to, they can be prepared for the future by investing in it and being smart.
Too bad no one ever told the Bush Administration this.
