And when the resources are sent, they are understaffed. I hear that staffing on the hospital ship USNS Comfort, planned to be underway to the Gulf of Mexico, can support only 250 of the 1000 beds (http://www.govhealthit.com/article90587-09-01-05-Web&newsletter%3Dyes)
Osama also sees that the easiest way to create chaos is to blow up a levee.
you have to see bush on tv right now to believe this
you cant make up this stuff
he is being "briefed" on what is going on -- and he looks bored!
Posted by distributorcap at September 2, 2005 08:36 AMEven Bill O'Reilly said they should have sent in five times the number of National Guard that went in. Of course, when they're off in Iraq and no one back home wants to sign up because they're afraid they'll end up in Iraq, attrition is to be expected. But then the Pentagon said we've got plenty of National Guard down there. Yeah. Right. The Pentagon didn't know how many soldiers we needed in Iraq and they know how to handle natural disaster now?
Posted by ann at September 2, 2005 08:39 AMToday I heard the man who should be the new leader for Democrats. Mayor Nagin of New Orleans. A politician who tells it like it is....I never thought I'd hear one again. He is so right - the federal government failed. And I am in disgust of the officials who say that they poor and resourceless citizens of NO didn't get out when they had the chance, so this is what they get. I guarandamn-tee you that if we were talking about white people here you'd have seen big time action from the get-go.
Posted by T2 at September 2, 2005 08:47 AMSimple, Chimpy is a fucking idiot and Rupert isn't.
Posted by Tibor at September 2, 2005 08:48 AMIf 20,000 investment bankers or stock brokers were stuck at the Superdome they'd have been rescued days ago.
Posted by Tibor at September 2, 2005 08:50 AMIn fairness to disaster responders sending tens of thousands of armed and equiped troops into New Orleans isntantly is a lot easier said than done. Dubya is a total fuck-up and really needs to hang from a rope for the Iraq mess if nothing else. However, telling 40,000 National Guardsmen to fan out into a city is rather problematic when they can't be fed, have no water and most importantly nowhere safe and secure to encamp. None of this excuses their lack of mobilization but exactly how effective could they be if they were dropped in and immediately commenced to suffer the same danger and deprivations as the people they were sent to help? Do we want to repeat Iraq, sending young men on a mission their superiors have not adequately plotted out and are not prepared to fully fund and equip? The damned shame is despite all I've just written SOMETHING, SOMEHOW NEEDS TO FUCKING GET DONE!!
Posted by steve duncan at September 2, 2005 09:03 AMThis just points out how dispite all the hot air coming from Mr. "Bring 'em On" Bush, four years after 9/11 the country is woefully unprepared to deal with an immense disaster. Woefully lacking leadership, direction, resources. In short, every damn thing Bush has been telling us he has been doing to aid our citizens in a disaster.
Posted by T2 at September 2, 2005 09:21 AMI saw on tv yesterday (or the day before? the misery is all running together) that there were military (guardsmen?) there to distribute food and the food wasn't there yet.....and hours later it still wasn't there......
Posted by Sharon at September 2, 2005 09:24 AMhey DistributorCap....I've seen that look before and I don't think its boredom. I think it is fear..fear from having no clue what to do..fear from the realization that he, Bush, is the one that has to make something happen....not Bill Clinton or Bush's Daddy, but him G.W.Bush, and fear that once again in his life, he just doesn't have it in him.
Posted by T2 at September 2, 2005 09:24 AMWe have to get rid of this entire administration now. At this rate by the time bush is out of office, America will no longer be the world's Super Power but the world's Stupid Power.
Posted by jj at September 2, 2005 09:44 AMYou'd think they could at least fly over and drop some k-rations? Come on.
Posted by ann at September 2, 2005 09:48 AMT2 -
As I think you said in so many words . . . Bush doesn't seem to realize that HE has to make something happen.
It's pretty damn disparaging to hear him say that the federal response hasn't been adequate. Duh! He IS the feds. I think someone needs to remind him of that. Of course he was too busy vacationing when the hurricane hit, and obviously could'nt be bothered with any such reminders.
Posted by joregon at September 2, 2005 12:20 PMBECAUSE BUSH IS WORTHLESS!!!
Posted by at September 2, 2005 05:17 PMNow we know what the people of Iraq have had to endure.
Posted by Judith at September 2, 2005 06:59 PMWhere was Bush's intelligence on the ground. Brownie didn't know about the Convention Center until Thursday afternoon. If he had watched TV he would have been so much better informed.
Somebody tell Cheney he can come out now.
