"Rehnquist has died."
How can you tell?
Posted by smokey at September 3, 2005 09:11 PMHow can I tell? Because Bu$h was in serious need of a distraction from his disastrous 'rescue' of New Orleans.
Posted by pessimist at September 3, 2005 09:21 PMIts time for dems to shut down the legislative branch, and demand a sane agenda.
1. Team Bush, Chertoff, Brown and all other apologists must be both replaced and held very publically accountable. At minimum they must step down for their criminal negligence. The madness and mismanagement must come to an end. True transparency of operations in NO and surrounding area should be visible and verifiable to ALL citizens.
2. Two nominations to the supreme court now hang in the balance. After Katrina this is the next order of buisness.
3. Planning for and dealing with the ripple effects of Katrina.
4. All other business must be off the table.
Continue choking on your bile, lefties.

"PRESIDENT BUSH TEMPORARILY NOMINATES JUDGE JUDY UNTIL A REAL JUSTICE IS CONFIRMED"
IMAGINE IF CLONING WERE LEGAL UNDER BUSH'S WATCH, the headline would read
"BUSH'S NEXT SUPREME COURT NOMINEE - SCALIA AND THOMAS CLONE"
Posted by David at September 3, 2005 09:48 PMpatience -- you have it exactly right. No business until later after Katrina has been fully dealt with.
Sandra Day O'Connor can continue to serve -- reasonable sacrifice for her given that her vote in Bush v. Gore put an incompetent idiot in the WH that has contributed to the deaths and suffering of many in New Orleans.
Only hope that Rhenquist remained lucid enough in the past few days to have observed Bush's performance this week.

Posted by MarcusAgrippa at September 3, 2005 10:01 PMMarie,
Could you kindly explain that point to the outside the echo chamber type on the thread before this one? S/He may listen to you as opposed to me.
I just don't want our new residents here in Houston and in Texas to be forgotten in the mix.
thanks

Posted by dorita at September 3, 2005 11:47 PMDorito-faggot,
What do you have to say about the Democrats voting AGAINST leftist faggotism in all important Senate votes?
Posted by Liberals are Dumb at September 3, 2005 11:49 PMGees you must be new here -- like I thought. You can go back to your home, or stay here. I think it's ok if I offer that. You guys seem so frustrated. We are here in Houston, too. But we have a can do mayor and we are a can do city.
Welcome
Posted by dorita at September 3, 2005 11:56 PMDorito, don't answer the mf.
Posted by Judith at September 3, 2005 11:57 PMI know Judith, and thanks. I'm just a little anxious and frustated. But that will improve.
I stayed up later -- and will for a bit more - than I had planned.
It is reassuring to meet you here -- I know that your family has helped -- and it is appreciated, believe me.
I am tryig to be positive here. Your family has given. thank you, truly thank you
Posted by dorita at September 4, 2005 12:17 AMPessimist -- I know we have a high tolerance for trolls at TLC, but the new ones on this thread are not only exceedingly offensive but also exhibit immaturity and stupidity. Please delete those comments.
Posted by Marie at September 4, 2005 12:52 AMMarie,
Exactly which of the below do you dispute? :
The Patriot Act was voted on 98-1
The Tax Cuts in 1997 were passed 92-8
The Iraq War was voted on 77-23, with Senators Kerry, Edwards, Clinton, etc. voting in favor.
The Senate voted 100-0 to authorize another $80 billion for Iraq
The Senate voted 85-13 to confirm Condi Rice as Sec. of State.
Looks like the Democrats have rejected leftism outright..
Posted by Leftie Smasher at September 4, 2005 01:16 AMThe news coverage is more compassionate today.
Reinquist died-why didn't he resign?
The racists are outing themselves as they express their hatred of humanity, cry for lynchings and attempt to insult those who disagree by calling them faggots (like that hurts).
FEMA, Bush, etc... are making excuses for allowing so many to die and suffer. I suppose they're hoping we weren't paying attention to the news with prior warning. Maybe they hoped we'd forget.
There has been a public outcry and its had an impact.
Finally, a fresh breeze is in the air.
But the cost has been too high.
Posted by OffTheFence at September 4, 2005 03:19 AMNext, I expect to read that Rehnquist died a week ago. The admin kept it under raps. Waiting till it bungled some other event to use his death notice as a respite. Yeah that Chief, what a louse? Couldn't last till we could effect change in the leadership in DC.
Maybe Sandra can be encouraged to stay on a little longer. Either in her same position or the Chief's job and Roberts gets whichever is left over. You want that? But, she had legit reasons to retire, she might not be up for that. Get ready for Garza, Estrada, Owens, Brown, or Luttig for the next appointment. Then who's next? Stevens or Ginsberg, maybe both. Our President gets to put four judges on the court. Four judges in their fifties to effect change in the court for twenty years or more.
Y'all should have tried harder last year to defeat him. Cause your armegedon day has arrived.
God's speed Chief 1924-2005. Thank you for your service! We will miss you.
Posted by peter at September 4, 2005 04:32 AMDorito, you are doing so much right now, and you need all your energies to continue your positive work in helping. Don't waste that energy on people who are not worth. I admire you and don't forget to take care of yourself during this period of time.
Yes, my Sister and her Husband both are wonderful people. The first thing my Sister thought of was to open 'Grandma's' house. The wonderful thing is that everything is there that anyone would need. She also thought that it might be nice to initially have a home in a slow, quiet, small and friendly town outside St. Louis. After such a blow, easing into a new life might be better for someone coming out of the shock of losing everything. My Sister also has a website, http://www.taxcodirect.com/ where she sells Taxco quality silver and part of those sales go to helping a Mexican child she and her husband have befriended. The world certainly needs more people like them.
The last line should read "The world certainly needs more people like them, and you."
Posted by Judith at September 4, 2005 04:53 AMHey leftie smasher. You sound like a real bad ass. All you need is a little guts and muscle to face to face someone like me off line, huh?
Posted by Hank at September 4, 2005 05:18 AMMarie, let the trolls have their fun. I agree with the notion that WR died last week and it's all a gambit to cover up for Bush's crap. The WaPo's headline this morning is that the Admin is blaming local and state officials for the lack of help on the Gulf. I predict Bush will nominate Pat Robertson to fill in for William. True he has no judicial experience except being God's lawyer, that doesn't make any difference to this bunch on the Hill. They do exactly what they want to do and to hell with the rest, as so succinctly apparent on our TV screens. And where is Cheney?
Has anybody emailed their Republican congressman to protest the slavish they have to Bush? I did, my congressman is Frank Wolfe, a lock-stepper, right, right to Bush.
Posted by Mal Feasance at September 4, 2005 05:51 AMNice take, Leftie. Now try saying through your mouth.
Posted by Leatherneck at September 4, 2005 06:34 AMHaving to replace two justices at once is almost certainly preferable to replacing them in consecutive years. Dems (I've stopped saying "we") don't have to cut deals with GOP senators who promise that next time they'll support our insistence on a moderate. We can cut deals for a moderate right now, and if we don't get one, well, it's been time to go to the mattresses over some Bush atrocity for years now--a couple lifetime appointments, whose purpose is to trash the New Deal, seems like as good a reason as any.
I concur with Marie, too. Leftie Smasher's comments are what we sometimes refer to as "hate speech," or at least hate-feces-throwing. Cut 'em.
Posted by dj moonbat at September 4, 2005 06:36 AMIt seem that if Bush wants to preserve whatever is left of his "legacy", he should do something bold in his appointment of Rehnquist's replacement. Someone who is "middle of the road" and fiercely intelligent. There is such a person, and he is currently available - Bill Clinton. Mr. Clinton is a hard worker, can bring some moderation to the court, and although his appointment would be opposed by the neo-cons, it would be the best thing that could be done for this hurting country.
Posted by Cookie Monster at September 4, 2005 06:45 AMyou know that God is merciful because stupidity is not immediately painful. These trolls celebrate the destruction of this democracy and insult patriots, but do they risk anything? Are they or any of their family members in Iraq?
If you like the neocon revolution you need to move to New Orleans or Baghdad. These cities are the Bush legacy.
Posted by angel at September 4, 2005 07:02 AM2006 - we have to turn the country to another path. Which side are you on, boys? Which side are you on?

The ranks of federal appellate judges are rife with utterly brilliant (even Clinton-level bright) men and women who have worked their ways up through the ranks. Many are conservative, but not hellbent on dismantling Warren-era public rights jurisprudence, or New Deal Commerce Clause jurisprudence.
We don't need a middle-of-the-roader in a political sense. We just need a nominee who's proved to the world that s/he does not have a serious legal axe to grind. Roberts is clearly not that guy. We should insist on somebody who is currently sitting on a court of appeals, and whose first appointment to the bench was by some other president (we should not insist on a Clinton appointee; service over more than a dozen years should suffice), even if their current appointment was by G-Dub.
This "stealth candidate" bullshit has to stop.
Posted by dj moonbat at September 4, 2005 07:28 AMBu$h is laughing his ass off. He is happy that Rehnquist died. I know that is bad to say but he is so happy that this takes some minds off New Orleans and him.
Posted by john at September 4, 2005 07:46 AMAnybody read Brooks today? He admits the failures of the Bush administration and then he muses over which Rep leader will be the next Pres. Is he fucking kidding? It has now been proven that the Reps just don't have the ability to protect the citizens - they didn't prevent 9/11. They didn't have the ability to deal with a hurricane in a major city. The curtains have been pulled and you can now see they are nothing but swagger and posture and ideology. They have no grasp on reality and no ability to deal with challenges.
Posted by ann at September 4, 2005 07:51 AMHe admits the failures of the Bush administration and then he muses over which Rep leader will be the next Pres. Is he fucking kidding?
He says that in the context of the possibility of a change toward a "law and order" American politics. But he also acknowledges that these current failures might presage a new progressivism (though, because of his leanings, he doesn't offer any candidates).
Brooks is beginning to look like a bellwether, because he's only looking out for one guy--David Brooks. He has clearly determined that pure advocacy for the administration is no longer a winner. The more he equivocates, the more certainly we know that leftward change is on the horizon.
Posted by dj moonbat at September 4, 2005 07:56 AMHey...the Government was slow as molasses for hurrican viction, but the Government is going to move quickly on filling those Supreme Court vacancies.
