Senator Hillary Clinton yesterday called on President Bush to appoint an independent national commission to review Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Clinton also said she intends to introduce legislation to restore FEMA to an independent agency with cabinet-level status.
Clinton urged the president to appoint an independent national commission, the Katrina Commission, comprised of individuals with “significant experience, knowledge, training, and planning for natural disaster preparedness and response to fully examine the adequacy of federal response efforts to ensure that our nation is completely prepared to deal with the demands of any future disasters that come our way.”
Clinton said, “The slow pace of relief efforts in the face of a mounting death toll, coupled with the need to handle what is sure to be an unprecedented long-term feeding, housing and medical care challenge, seems to confirm that our ability to respond to cataclysmic disasters has not been adequately addressed. Therefore, I ask that the Katrina Commission be constituted similar to the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and be tasked with conducting a full assessment of a number of critical issues including our preparedness for natural disasters, resources for mitigation, organizational changes needed, why assistance was delayed in getting to people in the impacted areas, and what long-term recovery efforts are going to be needed for the people who survived the initial destruction."
It's time to call them out for being the miserable failures ...
Remember that a fish rots from the head down. Think Arbusto or Harkin Energy ... shit, think about prescott bush, Union Bank and IG Farben. The track record is in the public domain for all to see.
The problem with hiring people for important positions in government solely on their character, is that all you end up with is a bunch of characters.
Posted by Dave at September 6, 2005 02:22 PMthe problem with appointing a guy president because the Supreme Court has one more conservative vote than liberal is we end up with a miserable failure.
Posted by T2 at September 6, 2005 04:23 PMWhat do we do about rebuilding New Orleans? Do we rebuild in a sinkhole, and spend billions improving the levee system? Or do we preserve the historical district, and reinforce the levees peotecting that area. Then build residences north of New Orleans out of the flood plain. I am sure either way some folks will be unhappy and want to sue. Right now, some are refusing rescurers pleading them to leave. If they stay and die, will the rescurers be faced with wrongful death suits from family members, for not physically removing them. If they remove them, will they be sued for violating civil rights? Now you have a opportunity to tell us what you would do, since you appear to be experts after the fact.

Frustrated: Fire crews to hand out fliers for FEMA
By Lisa Rosetta
The Salt Lake Tribune
Salt Lake Tribune
ATLANTA - Not long after some 1,000 firefighters sat down for eight hours of training, the whispering began: "What are we doing here?"
As New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin pleaded on national television for firefighters - his own are exhausted after working around the clock for a week - a battalion of highly trained men and women sat idle Sunday in a muggy Sheraton Hotel conference room in Atlanta.
Many of the firefighters, assembled from Utah and throughout the United States by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, thought they were going to be deployed as emergency workers.
Instead, they have learned they are going to be community-relations officers for FEMA, shuffled throughout the Gulf Coast region to disseminate fliers and a phone number: 1-800-621-FEMA. ...
"They've got people here who are search-and-rescue certified, paramedics, haz-mat certified," said a Texas firefighter. "We're sitting in here having a sexual-harassment class while there are still [victims] in Louisiana who haven't been contacted yet."
...the problem with appointing a miserable failure is that people die in times of national crisis!
Posted by bushblowsturdblossom at September 6, 2005 06:29 PMOld Man, after the Chicago fire of 1871, the city rebuilt in the same location, actually extending the city into Lake Michigan. Engineers had the debris from the fire dumped into the lake and they built it up from the bottom until it was level with the rest of the city. I have to wonder if New Orleans filled up the bowl whether they coud build there or not. Clearly technology has taken us further than where we were in 1871.
Posted by ann at September 6, 2005 08:29 PMGOP flunkies or DEMO Flunkies FEMA is not a first responder they are COORDINATORS. They don't have food, water, helicopters, or cops. They are supposed to help LOCAL officials coordinate with Federal agencies. If Local IDIOTS want to put off help to study a "Complex" plan then they can't blame FEMA for the lack of response. The Dems are going to lose big in this blame game but then it will deter from the many other lame-brained conspiracy theories they are purporting. Is there a guide to conspiracy theories I can down so I can keep up or is the plan to throw as much bullshit they can in hopes a scandal will grow? Shame on the Dems for politicizing this and they will pay at the polls (shades of Wellstone my friends).
