Comments: DeLay Unwittingly Undercuts GOP Rationale For Estate Tax Elimination And Permanent Tax Cuts

Oops. I wonder who'll shoot Tom for going off the reservation, since that's usually his job.

Silly, Tom is going to pay for the rehabilitation of the City of Louisiana with the kind contributions from all the old money that will be saved from the clutches of big government.

These scions of gentility and philanthropy will be throwing money at N.O. by basket full. I am sure they will be foregoing their yachts and such in favor of investment and Christian charity.

You just watch, it will happen.

Oh, c'mon, you know in the Repug world that 2+2=5. They have not been ones to connect the dots in the past, why would they start now. And if they are not connecting the dots, and the MSM is not connecting the dots, then the general public will not connect the dots. I'm still amazed at the number of people who do not see a correlation between Bush's tax cuts and closure of hospitals, fire stations, and schools.

Oh come on, Steve. There doesn't need to be an explanation of the difference between cutting gasoline taxes for the little people and eliminating the capital gains, dividends, and estate taxes for those who run the engine of American capitalism (for their own benefit).

Maybe cunningham could donate his yacht, is that what you're saying, j swift? ;-)

But Steve, don't you see, gas taxes are only good for gas related issues. Estate taxes are printed on different kinds of money and can only be used for Estates kind of stuff. Can't be mixing up the different kinds of money, now can you?

What? No muckpuppy yet? HUH a post about taxes and he isn't here yet. I saw his mark on other threads. I know he'll be along any minute to defend the dire urgency and necessity to repeal the estate tax on the wealthy, ASAP especially during all this talk about hurricanes and dead poor people. He'll come here and talk about the plight of wealthy people persecution in this country and whine "but it's not fair- more than my fair share" tax argument.....shhhh listen..........do you all hear that?

I am pretty sure I hear a violin feintly playing a very sad melancholic song and some unconsolable wailing and sobbing in the background as if someone might be hurt and upset. I recognize the tune of the song. I hear some of words through the sobbing... "nobody knows the trouble I've seen nobody knows"..yes that's it. I have heard that song and those words before and they sound like mucky. I know he's around here somewhere...just wait...he'll be here crying about inhumanity of the estate tax on the wealthy...just wait.

Estate Tax=Millionaire Welfare

Cutting gas taxes really doesn't help though. Our gov. here in GA Sonny Bubba Goober cut the gas tax last week. You know what? The price of gas stayed the same. All the oil companies do is figure people are paying 3.00 a gallon with the tax so they will pay the same without the tax.

I think the first $10 million should be exempt from death (estate) taxes. I think most fiscally conservative democrats agree on this idea. And then maybe a reduced rate or scaled rate upwards from there. Then, just index the "cap" to inflation from here on out.

Where it was before (around $1.2 million per couple) was way too low. It wasn't indexed to inflation. Heck, lots of CA residents have close to that much in just their home equity these days.

I think it's likely that we'll see taxes go up next year. Highly likely. You'll pay more. And it'll be offered as a "help New Orleans" temporary tax, that'll never go away. Might be a good way for you Democrats to introduce a national sales tax. 2% on everything purchased. Something like that.

I think we need to start referring to Bush's tax cuts as "deferred tax hikes." That's what they are in actuality. Why not just start talking about it now? Ask who is going to pay the bill, because someday soon, someone is going to have to start paying.

How immoral is it that the US is passing the hat around the world, asking really poor countries to chip in to help the victims of Katrina, while planning another round of tax cuts for the families of milllionaires?

Almost every country in the world is wonderful for the wealthy -- and for some reason we measure the relative well being of countries not by how few the poor number but by how many the wealthy number. Shame on all Americans that are so greedy that they can't see the tens of millions of poor people that live among us.

sure, cause if we can't screw poor people even more, how will we fund the kleptocracy? (oh yeah, through borrowing from our kids and grandkids, i forgot.)

muckdog,
The only politician I know of who advocates a national sales tax is my state's biggest embarrassment Jim DeMint. I doubt any serious Democrat would advocate a national sales tax because of its regressive nature.
