Just caught a thread from Brad's Blog about die-bold knowing the existence of problems from the voting machines. Haven't read it all.
Posted by bushblowsturdblossom at September 15, 2005 03:40 PMI was afraid privatization was going to include a tax hike or modification/removal of the income cap. I'm glad to see that everything is off the table.
Posted by muckdog at September 15, 2005 03:51 PMjust months ago the NRCC was claiming there were less than a dozen.
I had it at eight, with five of those seats currently held by Democrats.
Long time to go until 11/06, though. In otherwords, just because the Niners and Dolphins are 1-0, I wouldn't start selling Super Bowl tickets or Rattay/Frerotte Super Bowl jerseys just yet.

Posted by Bagley at September 15, 2005 05:26 PMThey don't call Social Security the third rail for nothing, it's slightly comforting to see the cong. reps. finally get it even if der leeder doesn't.
Posted by rlp at September 15, 2005 06:04 PMSocial Security - given all the demagoging that goes on, one wonders if it will ever be solved. Until it goes broke of course, when the congress will come up with the great idea to raise taxes to pay for the mess.
Posted by Hindu at September 15, 2005 06:33 PMHindu, they'll just start excluding folks who have assets.
Posted by muckdog at September 15, 2005 07:00 PMI sat up at the mention of increased military involvement in both the rebuilding and future crisis management. I happen to believe the posse comitatus act was one of the most intelligent reactions to the War between the States. I do NOT want to see battle hardened and frankly, brainwashed troops responding to major national disasters.
Keep in mind that the all volunteer military is composed of generally susceptible teenagers who are subsequently put through what would best be described as a cult programming prcedure called basic training. Throw them into a year or two of kill or be killed experiences in the middle east and I have no confidence in their judgement as regards to "civilians". This is a disaster waitng to be deployed.
There should be NO military role in natural disasters or even terrorist strikes. The mission is rescue and succor, not search and destroy. Keep Donald Rumsfelds' courtier-led military away from our cities and populations. All of our past true democratic leaders would be aghast at the very concept. Of all the bad ideas rattling around this repulsive, wannabe Imperial administration, this is truly the most repugnant.
Posted by DeminNewJ at September 15, 2005 07:34 PMraw story has a good part of the story here
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/GOP_lawmaker_on_SS_reform_Its_Ove_0915.html
of particular interest is this part:
"...Reynolds' strong desire to abandon Social Security reform is reflective of widespread nervousness among GOP campaign strategists about how the issue will play out next November..."
sounds good to me. keep 'em nervous and make 'em more and more nervous.
Posted by Michael Mayo at September 15, 2005 08:39 PMDemiNewj, exactly. I take no comfort in knowing that the military will be involved in future calamities to the extent that Bush is giving them control.
Posted by Judith at September 15, 2005 09:29 PMmr bush is now the fastest lame duck inhistory. he is irrelevant and superfluous, supplanted by katrina's rising tide. he is presiding over an economic debacle reminiscent of lbj in the mid 60s........you cant have guns and butter........we are in a troubling box of his making and when the economy slips he will have no levers to pull to aid it.jjj
