Comments: Get Ready For The Usual Bush Spin On Reconstruction Speech Tonight

Steve:

As usual, you make a number of great points. Thanks.

We must keep these (and others) at the forefront in the upcoming discussions.

Got your Saints rally cap on for the speech tonight?

I find this typical of this administration -- just another way they try to hide.

The web master for the white house site seems to have no problems updating proclamations made by w up through September 9th. link

But when it comes to executive orders -- they're still stuck on July 27. So that means the one about prevailing wages is still not up. link

I've already written to the web master to request the page be updated. If you would like to do the same:

Personal opinion: budget cuts.

The National Endowment for the Arts -- gone.

Housing and Urban Development -- gone.

Department of Education -- gone.

At least 50% of the recent highway bill -- gone.

And a whole lot more....

You forgot the CPB - or is that already being taken care of from within? And the EPA? Who needs that? Oh it's being taken care of in the same way as CPB. Let's see, the FDA doesn't seem to be doing anything of import -- except approving dangerous drugs and blocking useful ones based on politics. Oh that one is working the way you want it to as well, right?

Be honest, it's not so much of an opinion as a wish list.

AOL Online Poll. I love that. That's like asking all Mac users or Suburu drivers or NPR listeners what they think about GW.

Astounding Results!!!

george's speech on now -- What is george wearing under his shirt???? look to either side of the collar -- conspicuous bulge. It looked at first as though his head had been superimposed on his shouders.

The Department of Education is an important asset to the federal government. It provides funding for nearly 10 million college students. A college education typically leads to higher wages for those who've put in the time and effort. Higher wages = higher tax bracket = more money for the feds. Call it an investment in the future. And besides, most of the funds are in the form of loans. Low-interest loans, to be sure, but they need to be paid back. Probably the only reason I was able to afford college this semester was for the Perkins Loan, which I need to pay back after I graduate.

Thanks for paying your taxes and putting me through school, Bagley!

Did anyone else cringe as Duyba basically removed all disaster response from Homeland Sec. and placed it with the military, the Army specifically?

Has it been six months already Hindu?

My, how time flies.

Well he just finished his reading. In the east he is gone.
He did not need the bulge today as he was reading from a prop. It was announce at CNN.

The raw story has the advance speech. Georgy could not forget to add terrorism, WMD and….9/11.
The government of this nation will do its part as well. Our cities must have clear and up-to-date plans for responding to natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or terrorist attack … for evacuating large numbers of people in an emergency … and for providing the food, water, and security they would need. In a time of terror threats and weapons of mass destruction, the danger to our citizens reaches much wider than a fault line or a flood plain. I consider detailed emergency planning to be a national security priority. Therefore, I have ordered the Department of Homeland Security to undertake an immediate review, in cooperation with local counterparts, of emergency plans in every major city in America.

Another question for the Democrats to raise is what qualifies Rove to be in charge of the reconstruction?

I'd think you'd think so muckie since it had so much data rattling. Right up your alley. It was meant for you in that way, don't ya see? There was something there for every part of the base. Brooks summed it up -- his second point was pipelines up and running. Sound familiar? Hit the poverty and the racial points, too. But truly, did he say anything? I laugh at his inclusion of postal service and social security. At least for the evecuees in Houston, it has already been taken care of. The Astrodome has had it's on zip code for almost two weeks. The SS got that lined out two weeks ago. Finding each other? That has been going on all along. Check the domeblog. Tell me the PRESIDENT didn't give out a number like some infomercial huckster. Oh, it happened. Tell me something new. Just more layers of government. Congress do this and that. w's "speach" was so democratic that the base should go apeshit. But will you/they?

He loves the bagnettes at Cafe du Monde?

"Did anyone else cringe as Duyba basically removed all disaster response from Homeland Sec. and placed it with the military, the Army specifically?"

Great idea really. Homeland Security is a massive red-taped mess. The Army on the other hand was completely ready for the storm. It has been well documented that the Northern Command was tracking the storm through the Gulf and had supplies and troops stationed nearby ready to go.

Problem is the ancient Posse Comitatus act of the 1800s that prohibits national military from marching in without state consent. For whatever reason Gov Blanco resisted any national response (including, of course, nationalization of the LA nat guard) - presumably for political reasons - so the Army was left watching. And the people of New Orleans who ignored the weak and late evacuation order were left wandering.

Idiosynchronic, my blood ran cold.
Oops, my tinfoil hat is on. Maybe that was what this was all about.

Hindu, go play on the highway.

Was it just me, or did it look like he misbuttoned his shirt?

Posted by jillian at September 15, 2005 07:29 PM

Who'd a thunk the Right could become so divorced from "States Rights" that they'd promote the idea that federal troops should be able to march into any place they like at the discretion of the president.

It's all so confusing.

Can we officially christen the term "Big Government Conservatives" now?

Off the topic - is anyone else getting a "Pro site finder" page coming up before the Left Coaster page? I get this every time I hit my Left Coaster favourites - or is it just my computer?

The poll referenced, AOL, reinforces what we've been seeing for weeks, Bush has pretty much bottomed out in the mid-30% area. There is a hardcore white base that will not dump on any GOP president regardless of their ineptitude or downright criminality. Remember, there is a bunch who still think Nixon was a good guy.
