Nothing new, really. The ghost of Ante Pavelic lives on.
Hint to UN investigators: maybe Gotovinda has withdrawn to a life of quiet contemplation of the blessed virgin in Medjugorje.
Fucking Nazis.

I wonder how John Paul II - whose arm carried a Nazi ID number tattooed on his arm at Auschwitz - feels about this?

Posted by pessimist at September 20, 2005 02:16 AMSteve - the Catholic Church has a lot further to fall before it hits bottom. Bennedict has at least 5-10 years in him, after all.

Posted by at September 20, 2005 05:13 AMI'm trying to be surprised that Ratzinger would use the church to defend a war criminal, but it hasn't been that long since World War II, and maybe it's just some German-Croatian back-scratching.
Posted by Chris at September 20, 2005 06:25 AMNothing new, most of history of church and state in the western world is tied up with battles concerning whether secular or church law has primacy.
Posted by snarkitron3k at September 20, 2005 07:00 AMAs a man who attended a Catholic Seminary for seven years, it is so disheartening to see the church not only pursue a path that is inconsistent with Christ's teachings but also watch as it remains silent as others declare that they know the word of God and seemingly claim to hear his voice on a rather regular basis. I guess that would be fine except that those who are always talking to God seem so filled with hate.Anyone with any association with the Catholic clergy knows that there is a large percentage of gay clergy and yet we now see this new movement within the chruch to seek out and remove? What's up with that?
A theologian friend said one must defferenciate between christianity and christiandom. Christiandom is what we have done to Christ's teachings. Christiandom is also a politcal entity and one which calculates on a regular basis what is in its best interest and not necessarilty moral.
Posted by bob in St. Louis at September 20, 2005 09:10 AMThe Catholic Church has been and will always be guided by the Holy Spirit till the end of time. The Church is a healing and forgiving element of Jesus Christ! The world fails to pay heed to His words, therefore always seeking judgment and vengeance upon humanity! The Catholic Church has outlived nations and governments thought-out the centuries and could very well out live the United States because of its lack of faith and immorality! It is obviously falling into the same pattern as of ‘Sodom and Gomorrah!’
Posted by Julian Sanchez at September 20, 2005 12:15 PMSodom and Gomorrah? They were punished for being inhospitable to the visiting angels. Or do you have something else in mind?
However, I hope the church is "guided" by the holy spirit but who was doing the guiding when they claimed that the earth was the center of the universe or imprisioned Galileo? And then there is that small problem of burning poor Bruno at the stake? One might think that the bishops might not always listen to the holy spirit?
