Since bu$h couldn't deliver the basics through the DHS and FEMA; asking for the essentials in life; like h2o, food, proper sanitation and communications, created this atmosphere of cut throat hysteria hyped by FOX. FOX should be ashamed! That is much to much to ask!
Posted by bbtb at September 26, 2005 10:48 AMThat's the difference in the perception of Racism.
The broad disaprity in the polls on Katrina Blacks polling that racism did play a role, whites that it didn't, all have to do with their definitions of racism.
Those accused of racism, take a very literalist approach, "Did helicopters fly by black people to save white people?" Or, did someone withhold water from New Orleans thinking that they were black so who cares. And, no, that did not happen, so those on the defense of their character, "whites" in the polling said there was no racism.
But for those who have been at the bad end of racism, the internalized stereotypes, and the effects they can have, their definition of racism is far broader.
And, I think this article shows that although there was no overt racism, there was racism that held up Katrina relief.
So, no, no no one was refused aid because of their skin color individually, but collectively, they did suffer for the color of their skin and sterotypes.
Hope this makes sense.

Posted by mikevotes at September 26, 2005 11:09 AMI think I'd chock that up to the media oversensationalizing everything for ratings more than I would a right wing conspiracy. The choas of New Orleans made Bush look like a fool so I don't think making the situation seem worse was to help Bush any. Anyone who thinks Americans think the people of New Orleans deserved any of what happened should look at the outpouring of money, time, and effort by the general population for those effected.
Posted by Tex at September 26, 2005 11:19 AMAlthough I agree with Tex on the media exploiting Katrina, I did hear one or two individuals who were at the Dome who said there were problems tantamount to criminal activity. However, that does mean that I think the stories were not blown way out of proportion.
Posted by Judith at September 26, 2005 01:13 PMGood observations Mike.
This is good for me to read for I recieved an e-mail shortly after Katrina from a relative who although possessing good qualities in other areas, tends to believe the worst in this kind of situation. I noticed that the e-mail had a long line of forwards from different people and the text which I forced myself to read, quoted Fox news extensively.
If anything I see more polarization coming out of this as people tend to believe what they want to believe.
Posted by rlp at September 26, 2005 01:28 PMthanks for the laughs. cnn along with cbs msnbc fox and just about every news agency started the flap but of course fox made the mistakes. I do enjoy reading the comments here.
