Thanks Steve and Mary. Although a pain in the you know what, I think this was a good idea.

Posted by dj moonbat at October 2, 2005 06:24 AMcan i still parody troll? huh, mary, can i?
Posted by benjoya at October 2, 2005 07:13 AMWill it be easier to ban all with TypeKey?
Posted by buck turgidson at October 2, 2005 07:29 AMThanks Mary.
Posted by eriposte at October 2, 2005 08:10 AMThanks, Mary, let's see if benditobot can register! Also, while you're in there, I noticed the blogroll is missing something...can't quite put my finger on it...ahem.
uh, thanks again.
Posted by iamcoyote at October 2, 2005 08:23 AMiamcoyote, missing what? should I put low and left in the blogroll rather than where it is on the left menu?
Posted by Mary at October 2, 2005 08:30 AMI didn't see it there, hahaha, shows how much I pay attention...
*slinks away in shame*
Posted by iamcoyote at October 2, 2005 08:48 AM.....mmmmm good idea....does this mean the nasty trolls can be eliminated....
Posted by Goyo at October 2, 2005 09:05 AMTesting, testing. Let's see now....
Posted by rlp at October 2, 2005 09:14 AMiamcoyote, the problem isn't yours - I think you found a pretty important usability error and I'll fix it tonight when I get a chance. We'll get more visitors peeking in on low and left if we make it easy for people to find the link where they are looking for links.
Posted by Mary at October 2, 2005 09:19 AMActually, I fixed it now. You can find low and left in the blogroll as well on the left menu.
Posted by Mary at October 2, 2005 09:22 AMYou're too kind, Mary. I only noticed because I use the TLC blogroll as my bookmarks since I'm usually parked here most of the day. It'll teach me not to post until I've indulged in my morning hair o' the dog pick me up!
Posted by iamcoyote at October 2, 2005 09:47 AMBanning the trolls would take a great deal of fun out of things.
Posted by tempus at October 2, 2005 10:05 AMtempus, I hope that many of our resident dissidents do sign up - I also really think they add a great deal to the conversation or debate.
Nevertheless, we have had a couple fairly malicious commentors that probably won't sign up (because they would have to be responsible for their own words) - and we also get rid of some of the horrible spam comments which I spend too much time cleaning up (sigh).... There's no perfect solution for either problem.
Posted by Mary at October 2, 2005 10:11 AMWhile iamcoyote was busy badgering Mary, I was busy whipping up casting suggestions for the inevitable Plamegate movie. Fun for the whole family.
Posted by dj moonbat at October 2, 2005 10:41 AMEven if nobody in your family is registered with TypeKey. Our place is still too small to need a bouncer.
Posted by dj moonbat at October 2, 2005 10:44 AMIs blogwhoring a banishable offense? Not that we'd stoop so low...
Posted by iamcoyote at October 2, 2005 10:49 AMsigh - I hate typekey. Long ago had to stop commenting (and thus reading) Pandagon over this. Making people register to comment is creepy.
Posted by cerebrocrat at October 2, 2005 12:30 PMCan I still make angry flippant retorts?
Posted by bbtb at October 2, 2005 12:31 PMI think you'll notice only two main effects:
- No more comment spamming
- Trolls who are interested enough in repeat business to sign up
While iamcoyote was busy badgering Mary, I was busy whipping up casting suggestions for the inevitable Plamegate movie. Fun for the whole family.
DJ: I think that movie would rate as pornography, in the same league as "There's Something About Sheep".
Posted by tempus at October 2, 2005 01:45 PMMary -- I really like the new page format -- it's cool :)
I don't mind the typekey thing -- if one or two little steps taken by commenters will make your life a little easier, it's worth it.
Posted by dorita at October 2, 2005 02:25 PMThe new wide format takes some gettin' used to but I i like it.
Posted by muckcat at October 2, 2005 06:54 PMI would recommend widening the line spacing beyond its current setting (I believe it's 150%), enlarging the font to medium, or both. Then the eye won't have as much tendency to wander as it scans long lines.
Posted by dj moonbat at October 2, 2005 07:28 PMGreat. Now comes the crushing of the dissidents, beginning with mandatory registration to verify our identities.
I love it.
Posted by Toby Petzold at October 2, 2005 07:34 PMYou are planning to sign up, right, Toby? I would hope so, otherwise you won't be able to set us straight. :-)
Posted by Mary at October 2, 2005 07:41 PMLook, Toby:
You, u.jest, muckdog, etc. are at no risk. You're not nice or anything, but you're still talking about ideas. But we do have trolls who are here solely to engage in hate speech. I see no reason why we should underwrite their endeavors.
Posted by dj moonbat at October 2, 2005 07:50 PMToby -- it will also stop people from potentially posting comments using your name. That way we only get the pure Toby.
just thinking about it from a different angle. . .
Posted by dorita at October 2, 2005 08:14 PMThat's right Dorita, and it was a good idea.
Posted by Judith at October 2, 2005 08:29 PMIn fact Dorita, I brought that very issue to Steve's attention.
Posted by Judith at October 2, 2005 08:30 PMkudos to you :)
Posted by dorita at October 2, 2005 08:33 PMI was getting so much spam on my comments at thelearningcurve, that I had to turn on the secret word feature. I think some blog-bots just go off of the RSS feeds, and whenever I'd blog about 10 minutes later I'd have 5 spams
They'd all be like "This is a great blog. For another great blog, come visit somelinktospam.com"
I would recommend widening the line spacing beyond its current setting (I believe it's 150%), enlarging the font to medium, or both. Then the eye won't have as much tendency to wander as it scans long lines.
Good suggestion, dj. I'll do some work on that next weekend - or during the week if I find any time to check it out....
Posted by Mary at October 2, 2005 10:29 PMRegistering is vile idea, like registering your Judaism in Nazi occupied Poland, or for the draft in the USA;or that you're a Philistine in private while a Good Citizen in public--but I'm for it. Frivolous discourse eliminated for lively discussion on the most acessible blog in the sphere. Can it be simpler than Daily Kos or Smirking Chimp? George Bush is the most brilliant man I've ever known, too, Mrs. Texas Eyeliner'd old trashy looking hag SCOTUS pick!
Posted by Mal Feasance at October 4, 2005 04:40 AMYes, I was just joking about the registration thing. I wanted to see how many ACLUniks came out to whine.
I'll say it again: Soto et al run a very fine blog and I support whatever he wishes to do to make it better and more secure.
