j.west you should debate muckdog. He maintains that at least 12% of us are going to live in poverty no matter what. I guess it makes our effort to keep our base poor that much easier. Do you have anything but gross generalizations to add here?

Uhh, George . . . the troops would have been helpful after Katrina; now, it's the NIH that needs to be in charge of the flu pandemic remediation.
Or maybe martial law is just part of Dubya's "heckuva job" dictatorship fantasy.

Posted by idiosynchronic at October 5, 2005 12:20 PMck, I have no doubt that they're looking for some way to declare martial law for something. Especially around election time. Bush mentions it every once in a while so it won't seem a complete surprise to the masses who will just go along with it before they realize what's happening. Then it's too late. Bush mentions it way too often for it not to be a plan for the next disaster.

Now, that's just dumb. The "base" doesn't have many multi-million dollar estates that get taxed. And you know that. And you know that we know that. But still, you go and waste everybody's time.

I think he was attempting to say that if the poor didn't pay into SS, they'd have tons of leftover cash to invest and then they'd have just buckets to bequeath to their heirs. Which is equally disingenuous, because poor people need every penny, and if they got to keep that 8% of what they pay into SS, they'll spend it because they need to and won't have anything to invest anyway.

If you haven't noticed, your party has been relegated to the "bitch and moan" section of the cheap seats. What minor "victories" you think you've achieved amount to nothing.
You're willing to sell your souls for some momentary scoring of political "points" against someone who will never run for office again at the expense of the good of the country.
Have fun, don't bother yourselves with anything approaching an "idea" because I'm sure the next election will be won on the cleverest bumper sticker.

The point on SS was that by partial privatization (or better yet, total privatization), there would be an estate for even the poorest people to leave behind.
Even if an estate only amounted to $20,000 in today's money, that's a start towards financial independence. I know liberals would think "they would only spend it on crack", but we conservatives have a little more faith in people.

Out of all the posters here, you should know better. I've often thought it cruel how you put polls up to raise false hope among the Kool Aid crowd. There are a number of liberals still in therapy due to poll boosters in the '04 race.

You must be one of those trust fund kids who oughta be forced to work in a rendering plant for a month so you're not so fucking ignorant of how many people have to live. Explain to me exactly, fuckfaced cumsucking GOP pig, how people are supposed to build estates when their incomes have remained constant - or have fallen - while the cost of all necessities has risen steadily? Can you educate us?
You can't, because you're an inept, dishonest ideological fuck and the poster boy for why abortion should be kept legal.

Regarding Social Security...
Yep, looks like Social Security will die on the vine. We'll look back on this later and say "We coulda-shoulda..."
I hope the middle class are saving like crazy in their 401k plans. Because if they're relying on pensions or social security, they may just have to keep on working during those golden years.

You're a member in good standing of the "Caring Class". How you could force the irresistable temptation of a large sum of money onto the "Cared For" class without considering the consequences is beyond me.
The main thing is that we never give them the opportunity to find out what they would do with the money.
It's far better to dole it out in small monthly payments while they're alive and confiscate anything remaining when they die.

Muckdog, I got a news flash for you. Many retirees have to work "beyond their golden years" today thanks to GWB. Checkout the employees at Home Depot, Walmart, etc. These people are retired and working to keep their heads above water. I work two days a week to cover my ridiculously high medical insurance payments, that barely covers any medical expenses.
idiosynchronic, hey we have a border collie in the family. He just told me he is miffed at you.

Posted by Judith at October 5, 2005 01:56 PMj. west, you know as well as the rest of us the option to opt out of some form of altered/enhanced/improved SS system would be short lived. Posted by j.west at October 5, 2005 02:21 PMA Travis County grand jury last week refused to indict former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay as prosecutors raced to salvage their felony case against the Sugar Land Republican.
In a written statement Tuesday, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle acknowledged that prosecutors presented their case to three grand juries — not just the two they had discussed — and one grand jury refused to indict DeLay. When questions arose about whether the state's conspiracy statute applied to the first indictment returned last Wednesday, prosecutors presented a new money-laundering charge to second grand jury on Friday because the term of the initial grand jury had expired.
Working on its last day Friday, the second grand jury refused to indict DeLay. Normally, a "no-bill" document is available at the courthouse after such a decision. No such document was released Tuesday.
Earle's statement on Tuesday said he took money-laundering and conspiracy charges to a third grand jury on Monday after prosecutors learned of new evidence over the weekend.
Lawyers for DeLay immediately called foul after Earle released his statement after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
"What could have happened over the weekend?" said Austin lawyer Bill White, who represents DeLay. "They investigate for three years and suddenly they have new evidence? That's beyond the pale!"
White suggested that Earle released his statement Tuesday because he feared reporters would learn about the no-bill.
In his statement, Earle said he would have no further comment because grand jury proceedings are secret.
Tom DeLay deliberately raised more money than he needed to throw parties at the 2000 presidential convention, then diverted some of the excess to longtime ally Roy Blunt through a series of donations that benefited both men's causes.
When the financial carousel stopped, DeLay's private charity, the consulting firm that employed DeLay's wife and the Missouri campaign of Blunt's son all ended up with money, according to campaign documents reviewed by The Associated Press.
Jack Abramoff, a Washington lobbyist recently charged in an ongoing federal corruption and fraud investigation, and Jim Ellis, the DeLay fundraiser indicted with his boss last week in Texas, also came into the picture. DeLay, Successor Blunt Swapped Donations
Posted by iamcoyote at October 5, 2005 02:46 PMGood Lord, iamcoyote, that article makes DeLay appear even more slimey than I had ever imagined.

I think the limit of toleration should have been reached with the latest "bitch slap" post. It's one thing to trade shouts of "jackass" & "fucktard"--geez, half the fun would be gone without such opportunities to vent. She could get as much interaction on these topics on some conservative blog (if it allowed comments), but she comes here for what must be other, perverse reasons. I say, ignore her, or ditch her.
