Whatever happens I really hope she doesn't withdraw. These hearings are just going to be too good to be true, especially if they come in the midst of indictments handed down by Fitzgerald against WH political staff.
Bush's problem is that he's not asserting his strengths in this nomination by repeatedly pandering to his base. Yes, they're important, but at some stage you have to appear Presidential and state a more compelling case than "trust me."

not for me, you don't.
Posted by ben-ditto at October 12, 2005 09:56 AM"what strategy do you suggest Senate Democrats follow in the weeks leading up to the hearings?"
Passs the popcorn and enjoy. And, whenever a Dem is before the cameras, the word crony should be in every sentence. Oh, yeah, and keep the hearings going as long as possible.
Posted by Raenelle at October 12, 2005 10:15 AMI agree with Raynelle--just crony, crony, crony--but we think she deserves a chance to make her case.
Posted by sagacity1 at October 12, 2005 11:13 AMThis thing is turning into a disaster for Bush. It is worse than his Social Security fiasco in that he is convincing fewer & fewer people in a much shorter amount of time.
The religious angle is surely pissing off the Repub senators.
Don't be at all surprised that this nomination is over in a week.
Senate Dems should do all they can to make sure the Miers hearings actually take place----excellent strategy from the Left Coasters above.....
I can't wait!!
Posted by euzoius at October 12, 2005 12:00 PM"Keep up all the great work," she wrote. "The state is in great hands. Thanks also for yours and your family's personal sacrifice."
In October 1997, Ms. Miers sent Mr. Bush a flowery greeting card in thanks for a letter that he had written on her behalf. In it, she said of his daughters: "Hopefully Jenna and Barbara recognize that their parents are 'cool' - as do the rest of us."
She added, "All I hear is how great you and Laura are doing," and ended, "Texas is blessed."
I don't know Ms. Miers at all, but this lady has just got to be sniffing glue. She sounds a lot like my twelve-year old niece. You have to admit, it is truly incredible watching BushCo$ fall apart when Rove is too busy saving his own ass.
Posted by tempus at October 12, 2005 12:11 PMCome on tempus!
He can't help it if he was "the greatest governor ever".
Posted by snark at October 12, 2005 12:18 PMSnark: you're right. It was simply God's will.
Posted by tempus at October 12, 2005 12:32 PMYou should see her Hello Kitty collection. It's so COOL!
Posted by iamcoyote at October 12, 2005 12:33 PMPerhaps an even more interesting question of strategy is once this nomination implodes, which it will do within 2 weeks when she withdraws, how should Democrats handle the inevitable nomination of a hard-ass rightwing judge? what say the gang of 14?

Posted by Bruce K at October 12, 2005 12:34 PMbruce,
Democrats should handle it the same way they will need to handle everything else for next 30 years..... just bend over and hang on.
Posted by j.west at October 12, 2005 12:43 PMit was inevitable the coward west would show up here..since you have rove as a hero you should enjoy his tactics,,west hates America and all it stands for...he is a craven chimp supporter who is too cowardly to go to Iraq where he belongs...keep posting asshole you show your ass every time...

Posted by Judith at October 12, 2005 01:02 PMDemocrats should do their best to get Republicans on the record that it is the duty of senators to aggressively probe the qualifications and record of the nominee. Then when Miers goes down and Bush nominates a wingnut, the Democrats will be in a much better position to demand answers, and not tolerate the obstruction that we say with the Roberts nomination.
