Comments: Embattled Supreme Court Nominee Twists in the Wind

I've seen other bloggers suggest that Bush's refusal to release her papers is laying the groundwork for withdrawing her nomination as part of a "principled" stand, rather than a craven political loss.

I've also seen those suggestions, and they strike me as utterly plausible. What will be interesting/terrifying is waiting to find out whether Bush responds with a Janice Rogers Brown, or if the burden of weathering indictments puts him in a spot where he has to select a consensus candidate.

The comparisons to Carswell are decent, but at least Carswell got to the full Senate before he was soundly rejected. At the rate Miers is going, she might not even get the chance to be rejected in the Judiciary Committee.

Bush, out of defiance, will never withdraw her name. I agree with dj moonbat, she will not be confirmed, but then what? That is the scary part.

C+ Augustus will need someone representing him. Perhaps he should kill two birds at a time and simply retain his legal counsel.

Hey kids, new Niger forgeries story out! Pretty cool. I put some links on L&L, though you'll find them soon enough.

Why shouldn't we have a mediocre judge on the SCOTUS? There are a few terrible ones there (Thomas, for one), why not an average dolt?

Confim her and we'll have a few laughs. Bu$h tries to make the court more conservative but he's only making it more ridiculous. First the white-bread chief Roberts who may be brilliant (he was apparently born with a silver scales of justice in his mouth and groomed from the age of two for the job) but likely will be just a cipher, and now Harriet-the-Mediocre: chosen only because she's Dumbya's crony.

Delicious!

Look, I had a one-night stand with Harriet, and I can tell you she will not legislate from the bench. What she will do defies physics, but that is another post.

Twisting in the wind or sinking into the mire? Which one is it?

I think after the Bush admin is finished, there will have to be a vigorous national effort to come up with some new metaphores for 'the state of being screwed.' We're overusing all of them.

Posted by idahogie at October 25, 2005 10:46 AM

I'm for Sinking in the Mier! Definitely.

Only 2 indictments? Can't my former fellow Democrats do a little better than that?

I guess pinning all your hopes on the trained seal Fitzgerald was a little premature.

I'm so glad I quit the democrat party. I'd be ashamed to be associated with such rank amateurs.

I'm on the winning team now.

A Former Dem:

Hooray for you!

Posted by idahogie at October 25, 2005 11:30 AM

You were never in the Dem party, dipshit, and we all know it. But at the end of today, if you're no longer proud, you'll be welcome in the Democratic Party. Your apologies to everyone here will be accepted gracefully.

Posted by iamcoyote at October 25, 2005 11:36 AM

back to miers...i have come around to the position that dems should want her to be confirmed, precisely because if she isn't, the next nominee will be a real fire-breather, and i'm betting that even the creaky, weakend bush thug machine can push him/her through.

Yeah, winning is all that matters to you people because that's all you've got. You elect corrupt and incompetent leaders, but damn, you won. When the multiple indictments come down around your corrupt party, you'll be losing again.

I understand completely. The GOP are professional liars, thieves, incompetents and idiots.

My records indicate that you were asked to leave for having non-consensual sex with a goat.

tempus, You sure it wasn't with the local donkey instead?

Donkeys do not do cheap whores.

Posted by tempus at October 25, 2005 01:53 PM

Hey guys, stop it.

"guess pinning all your hopes on the trained seal Fitzgerald was a little premature"

Fitzgerald is an independent (with a small 'i') who is well known as pursuing corrupt individuals, whatever their politics, be they aides to Chicago's Democratic mayor or Osama bin Laden, or those liars in the White House.
