Comments: Miers Withdraws

Bush bows to base. again. I wonder if Harry Reid is smiling or frowning this morning?

Steve, sorry we double-posted on Miers....looks like we were posting almost simultaneously...

What do you guys think the next pick will be? Reactionary or safe nomination?

Posted by Ga6thDem at October 27, 2005 06:37 AM

I wonder if Harry Reid is smiling or frowning this morning?

Well he didn't hurt his position I don't think. He was supportive of this nominee. When he goes balls to the wall in opposition to the right-wing ideology that is surely to be put forward next he can't be accused of being obstructionist. It was the Christian Fundies who killed this nominee. Don't let the talk about protecting presidential priviledge fool you.

That was a no brainer.

Considering the spontaneous reaction of just about everyone I now, left and right, to her nomination was "What? Another crony!" the writing was on the wall from day one. I'm surprised they let the charade go on as long as they did. What was Dubya thinking? He nominates someone who has handled every piece of paper that crossed his desk in the past five years and he's gonna be able to shout "executive priviledge" everytime someone asks her a question? I think someone hacked his political capital account. He still thinks the balance is a lot greater than it is.

I'm hoping bu$h realizes his "political capital" is spent and goes for a moderate judge! Perhaps trying to help his party in 06.
Knowing how he conducts himself though, he will go for an extreme conservative. Showing once again that his arrogance is what propels his little brain!

Posted by bbtb at October 27, 2005 06:58 AM

Well, whomever Bush nominates now will not be as qualified as Miers. Remember Jr. saying that she was the most qualified person he could pick?

Posted by Ga6thDem at October 27, 2005 07:08 AM

Remember Jr. saying that she was the most qualified person he could pick?

That's only because he was looking with his heart. (We know about that...eh...eh..Putin..eh.)

If he uses his brain this time.....oh...never mind.

Oh Good! Now he will appoint Janis Rogers Brown and let the games begin.

Posted by Cyber Sarge at October 27, 2005 07:17 AM

Since she was the head of the search committee that selected her, I wonder who she'll pick next?

Posted by croatoan at October 27, 2005 07:37 AM

an asswipe like you WOULD welcome that cyber smuck...

Posted by headxray at October 27, 2005 07:43 AM

Oh Good! Now he will appoint Janis Rogers Brown and let the games begin

That will cause a filibuster so fast it will set a record.

Posted by rlp at October 27, 2005 08:00 AM

By all the deities! I never thought I would agree, however peripherally, with Cyber Sarge, but he's probably right in the kind of pick we'll see from the "troubled Bush Administration". Oh how I enjoy typing that phrase!

Let's face it, Bush got bitch-slapped by the libertarian/Christopublican wings of his party. Even his peculiar pathology and a "distracted" Rove, will not prevent him from learning the obvious message. The next nomination will be a true-red, rip-snortin', fire breathin' Federalist Society mainliner with all the tutti frutti "conservative" credentials to make the wingnuts swoon.

In a way, I suppose it's better to finally have a battle and (hopefully) the Dems will show they stand for constitutional government and actually USE all their weapons. I had hoped for the whole sorry spectacle to drag on embarrassingly for several more weeks, though. I just bought a 5 lb. bag of Orville Redenbacher and am ready to consume it. Let's hope the indictments from this Fitzpatrick GJ and ongoing investigations from the next one will provide sufficient entertainment for us and distraction to them.

I seem to recall that there was a point made when Miers was first nominated that there were other candidates considered but several withdrew their names in fear of the viciousness and vitriol of the confirmation process. The allusion being that this included Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen.

Posted by ann at October 27, 2005 08:08 AM

Ann, you are correct, and if I can find that story, I'll post it.

Posted by Steve Soto at October 27, 2005 08:12 AM

That story had to do with Dobson.

There's this:

Dobson also said he learned that President Bush was looking only for a woman to appoint to the position, which eliminated many of the top names that Washington observers had bandied about in the days leading up to Miers' nomination.

Bush Seeks Woman

and this:

McClellan said Rove told Dobson that "some individuals, when the list was longer, well into the double digits, had said that they preferred not to be considered" because they did not want to deal with "the ordeal of going through the confirmation process."

the ordeal

ahhhh:

"[W]hat Karl told me is that some of those individuals took themselves off that list and they would not allow their names to be considered, because the process has become so vicious and so vitriolic and so bitter that they didn’t want to subject themselves or the members of their families to it," Dobson said.

Vicious vitriol

"stupid-looking Bush"
"troubled bush administration"

Gosh, those terms sound sweet.
