Centrist, did you even bother to read the whole post? She didn't "fuck up" as you posit:
But on the afternoon of Oct. 17, she received a call from work telling her to come in the following day and get her things because she was being fired. Her pink slip said the reason was she failed to show up for work Oct. 17.
She was fired because she called in to work. That's not "fucking up."

Posted by iamcoyote at October 27, 2005 10:40 AMThis is a perfect example of the disconnect between American society and the reality of war. It is not a game, not a weekend on the slopes. If the warhawks were sending their sons and daughters into harm's way, we would not be fighting this stupid war.
Posted by tempus at October 27, 2005 10:50 AMDid anyone bother to think that maybe she is just a bad employee that fucked up on the job a lot?
That's what I personally concluded about Bush a long time ago. But at least in his case we have some evidence that it's true as opposed to idle conjecture.
Posted by snark at October 27, 2005 10:52 AMsnark, great observation.

Posted by Tibor at October 27, 2005 11:08 AMHere is a copy of an email I sent to Henry.
Dear Henry,
Too bad you had to fire the lady who is trying to cope with her husband of 22 years going off to war. War really is a young persons job. I did it as a kid and young man in the '60s for the U.S. Navy.
Too bad Your company isn't a nationwide outfit so I could make sure I don't use your services.
However, I imagine the rest of your employees are just tickled pink that they may qualify for overtime now that some of the competition as been eliminated.
And, Henry, I don't suppose you really care, and probably did not consider, what firing the wife will do to the soldiers morale.

Posted by Chief at October 27, 2005 12:14 PMThere's not enough information in the original article to justify getting all foamed at the mouth about this. There are always two sides to every story, and even though I loathe shit-for-brains-bush, I'm not ready to immediately assume the worst case on this situation based on one probably-biased side of the story. The kind of knee-jerk overraction to this story doesn't do our side credibility any good in the long run.
Posted by FiddleMinger at October 27, 2005 12:33 PMThere's not enough information in the original article to justify getting all foamed at the mouth about this.
That's part of the point. The entire mentality behind the fearmongering of War on Terror, with us or against us 24/7 is predicated on knee jerk emotional reactions. To disent is to be un-American or un-patriotic or, TRAITOROUS.
Any criticism of the military is unacceptable.
Well consider this a little bit of blowback.
Posted by snark at October 27, 2005 12:41 PMThis is a sad story, but is related to labor's relative weakness to capital, a problem which has become even more pronounced under Bush than Clinton. Also, economic growth has been tepid. This is a complex problem, but I see little on the horizon for remedy from either party. If the labor market was better, and assuming she was a satisfactory employee, and the company was in decent financial shape, there's no way they'd be so cruel.
Posted by moderate at October 27, 2005 12:43 PMsnark, These new recruiting tecniques are cetainly clever!! They really are hard up for new people!! This certainly was a lame attempt by bu$hco to get her to join the military. It's the latest line of newlywed gifts, if your husband is going, why not join him in lovely Baghdad. Why wait for him to come home, you can join him in as little as 16 weeks, sooner if you want. We need the fodder! Boy will he fight harder now that his wife is here!
Never underestimate the power of our Government!
Wasn't she fired for not coming back the day she said she would come back? The day AFTER her husband left. I feel bad for her, no question, but if you work for an asshole, and you fail to work on a day you committed to work, this kind of stuff can happen.
This kind of stuff DOES happen ... every day, just not for the same reason. Too sick, couldn't find a babysitter, car broke down.
Someone above nailed it. Labor is valued so much less than capital that we have all become resources that are entirely expendable and swappable.

Posted by Red_Neck_Repub at October 27, 2005 04:19 PMI am not on the side of the insensitive idiot who fired the employee in question but a few things crossed my mind...
Was there a reason she couldn't have called in sick instead of just not showing up?
I'm looking at this from a legal standpoint and if she pursued wrongful termination, unless the employer did something illegal, then she doesn't have shit as far as a court of law goes. The only thing she has is a guilty verdict in the court of public opinion for the asshole who terminated her.
Posted by Zen Warrior at October 27, 2005 06:41 PMJust hope her husband gets home in one live piece.
She can always get her job back.
