Comments: Reid Forces Frist Into Re-Opening Senate Inquiry Into Bush Handling Of Iraq WMD Intelligence

great to see Reid playing hardball with the criminal party..hope this continues...

Wow - the Democrats are actually doing something!

I'm shocked. I didn't think they had it in them. It only took them 3 years but better late than never I guess.

Too soon to tell if it goes anywhere but maybe this means the opposition party may actually start, you know, opposing. Even if it changes nothing I have to give them credit for finally trying something instead of just bending over and letting the GOP gang rape them as usual. About damned time.

Give 'em hell Harry.

Bullies, meet fists.

BooYah, Harry!

Posted by bbtb at November 1, 2005 12:52 PM

Thank you Harry. Shut it all down until you get answers and ligit responses from the WH. When you are minority, you have nothing to lose.

If Fitzgerald could get the secret docs from the WHIG, Democrats should demand to see them.

If Fitzgerald got the internal niger investigation report from The Italians, the US senate should have it.

Demand that Bush and Cheney openly talk about their involvement in Traitorgate. The GJ secrecy rules don't apply to Bush and Cheney.

It is traitorgate, stupid.

God, Harry is a sharp operator. This will throw them off rhythm something fierce.

IT'S ABOUT TIME DEMOCRATS. IN FACT, SHUT IT DOWN!

Send Harry Ried an email encouraging him to keep the pressure on. him.http://reid.senate.gov/email_form.cfm

Posted by Judith at November 1, 2005 01:15 PM

We should tread carefully though, this is the best move Reid could have made, but the image should not be that we surprised them or sand-bagged them, Senator Durbin told reporters that they were informed prior to Reid's speech. Instead this should be played for what it is, an act of courage and heroism, Reid is forcing the Republicans to clean their laundry and to do it in front of the American people, bird flu and Scalito be damned.

I was wondering where the 7 billion for Bush’s flu program was coming from.

It seems the GOP is getting pretty good at spending money that they’ve ‘saved’ to keep it out of the hands of the Democrats! LOL!

The 39 billion dollar deficit reduction plan has not even passed yet and the GOP has already spent 7 billion of the savings.

Maybe they can claim they voted to save the money before they voted to spend it.

Gregg acknowledged it seemed ironic for conservative Republicans to promote more spending, but he said it was a tactical move to take extra savings off the table so that Democrats wouldn't grab them.

``We felt it was better to identify places ... where we knew we were going to have to spend it anyway. We know we're going to have to spend the money on the avian flu,'' Gregg said.

Posted by snark at November 1, 2005 01:21 PM

Yesterday's nomination of Alito proved that the only thing this party and administration wants is divisiveness. Bush's motto Divide and Conquer...Divider not a Uniter. Well, if that is what they want then it's about time that Democrats oblige and give them it. Fight back hard, demand answers, don't back down and never give up! It's about time!

Posted by emal at November 1, 2005 01:23 PM

Perhaps he read my post ;-)
---------------
"We should constantly be reviewing our policies, constantly be looking at those sanctions to make sure that they are directed toward that purpose. That purpose is every bit as important now as it was ten years ago when we began it. And frankly they have worked. He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors. So in effect, our policies have strengthened the security of the neighbors of Iraq, and these are policies that we are going to keep in place." - Colin Powell, FEB 2001

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld should be impeached and then arrested.

ATTENTION CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS. We know you know in your heart that what Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld have done with Iraq far exceeds the moral AND legal test for impeachment and shows them to be a clear and present danger to the United States of America. You must stand up and say so.

You have a duty to the American people, yourself and humanity to GO TO THE MAT for bi-partisan, well funded and transparent congressional investigations leading to impeachment. Shut down the governments business if that's what you have to do to move this forward and pound it into the American mind. Use whatever guerilla parliamentary procedure available to you. Say and do nothing else until the GOP agrees to investigate what any sane and just mind considers horrific crimes. No legislation, no issue, no job, nothing you can personally gain or lose is more important (or potentially politically effective) than this effort. Nothing is more important than cutting this cancer from our government. Our safety, perhaps even our very survival depends on it.

Mountains of evidence make clear these people have behaved in ways that make them war criminals and traitors. You must stop them before they take us to war again, before they sell out our national security again, before they destabilize the world to the point of no return. It is your right and your duty. Only you and your fellow elected congressional Democrats can get this done. This is why the people elected you.

Stand shoulder to shoulder, stand tall. Walk down the hall, grab your fellow elected Democrats by the collar, walk out onto the steps, and start saying what you believe. Say it loud, say it together and say it all the time, and you will drag the media and the American mind along. They have committed impeachable offences, they are destroying our national security and our good name, and they are profiting greatly from it. They must be held to account before we follow ancient Rome into the ashes of history.

I PROMISE YOU, in the end, not only will you know you've done the right thing, but you'll come out on top POLITICALLY as well. The American people will come to know traitors and criminals in their midst if you show them often enough what they look like. And in the end, they will be grateful. America needs leaders again. America needs heroes. Will you step up?

Senator Rockefeller, if you let Pat Roberts go back on his word to investigate the administrations use of intelligence, history will hunt you down and punish you in the same breath as those who have committed these despicable acts. Where are you? What could be more important than ensuring our leaders don’t twist intelligence to make fraudulent cases for war? As a member of the United States Senate you have the power to make sure this goes forward. You will have to put it on the line to be sure, but this is the right thing to do. Senator, we beg you, live up to your name. Stand tall in important ways.

Congressmen Waxman, Conyers, Lee, Rangel, thank you for all your letters, requests, complaints to the administration and the GOP leadership. You have done far more than most. You have shown you know right from wrong, that you have a heart, and you retain most of your humanity. But all that and a buck will buy America a cup of coffee. You have said many words that needed to be spoken. But it is clear we need different words now. We need words like IMPEACHEMENT and ARREST. Words like TREASON and HIGH CRIMES. Words like WAR PROFITEERING, CORRUPTION and CONSPIRACY.

We, the American people, need to hear from you how the conservatives SOLD OUT THE SECURITY OF OUR COUNTRY, OF OUR CHILDREN AND OUR LOVED ONES in order to try and COVER UP THEIR FRAUDLENT CASE FOR WAR. They LIED to bring this nation to war. We need to hear these words from you and your fellow congressional Democrats EVERY DAY.

These are simple concepts and the evidence is clear. Once you push these words and ideas into the American mind the game will be over. In fact, you have the chance to crush the Republican Party. With this war and the way in which we were driven to it you have the great weight of the truth. Avail yourselves of it often enough and you will crush the conservative movement.

It is clear the intransigence of this administration and the GOP leadership knows no bounds. They won’t budge until the American people demand it. The way to make that happen is for you and your fellow Democrats to shut-it-all-down, by whatever means necessary, until the evidence and consequences of their crimes are detailed in congressional investigations and front and center in our media culture. Your action will force Joe Sixpack to come to a conclusion about what you are saying. The cold, hard reality of the evidence and a few GOP rats fleeing the ship to avoid the rising water will take care of the rest.

You owe your constituents and humanity a course of action that is effective. Time is short. The situation is dire. Our rate of decay is exponential. We’re losing entire cities at a time. Impeachment was designed to save the nation from just this kind of leadership. It’s time for you to get out there and speak truth to power.

Now is your time. Write a chapter of great American history or forever be damned to the footnotes in another tale of empire gone by. America as we know it depends on your actions in the next weeks and months. History has an especially keen eye on these days. May it hold you in high regard. God speed…

Bravo to Harry Reid. Methinks the GOP might be regretting working so hard to defeat Daschle because that allowed Reid to assume the leadership post. Big mistake.

Bill Frist = big whiny baby. Another mistake the GOP ever had was elevating this loser to the Majority Leader post. After so many bonehead decisions by him, still think it was a wise choice?

Posted by gf120581 at November 1, 2005 01:40 PM

Man, Roberts sounds like he's going to cry..

Hey "The Real Truth", it looks very much like we're going to be able to test your prediction!!

The Truth, I sent your post to Reid. I hope you do not mind.

After a week or more of not very good news, it is wonderful to finally give the GOP what they have been begging for. A FIGHT!

Posted by Judith at November 1, 2005 01:50 PM

"Roberts sounds like he's going to cry."

Good. I hope Reid pounds the little toad into the ground. Roberts has been nothing but Cheney's resident lapdog in the Senate for a long time. It's time he started paying for his constant cover-the-veep's-ass games.

The Truth, yes, but I wanted to send it again as a reminder that the Left is behind the Democrats taking a stand, finally.

Well, Bush was going to use the "bird flu" to distract us today, but I guess we shut that puppy down.

Just got done watching Sen. Roberts post-closed-session comments.

He was fuming as well.

His response concerning Phase 2 of the investigation can be summed up thusly: "Buh...buh..butt we haaaaaave been working on it. Everyone lawyered up. It takes time. Leave me alone no one wants to get to this more than I! Reid is just pulling a stunt! We've never stooped to such levels!"

It was good comedy.

I tried for 20 minutes only to get busy signals. So just sent off an email that will get ignored as I'm not in Kansas anymore.

Posted by Simp at November 1, 2005 02:17 PM

"We've never stooped to such levels!"

You have just got to be kidding. LOL, LOL, LOL
That's page one of Rove's dirty tricks book, stoop to low levels.

Posted by Judith at November 1, 2005 02:24 PM

And for the record, the next time a GOP hack says the Democrats were engaging in a political stunt here, say two words: Terri Schiavo.

I believe you truly nailed it with this post, Steve.

The Truth, you rule, literally!!

Posted by bbtb at November 1, 2005 02:28 PM

Judith, about that bird flu initiative...seven billion Bush wants to spend...not sure where it's coming from...but I read yesterday that Rummy owns somewhere between five and twenty-five million in Tamiflu stock. That Bushie, making sure all his buds get their piece of the pie!

Posted by ann at November 1, 2005 02:32 PM

ann, Let's all make them eat crow!
Finally, the Dem's in America woke up!! Lets keep the heat on!!

Posted by bbtb at November 1, 2005 02:42 PM

Well Ann, at least Rummy will get his flu shot first. 9/ll has been replaced with the dreaded bird flu. I wondered how long it would take Bush to come up with another big fear for the American people, since terra is waining.

Posted by Judith at November 1, 2005 02:44 PM

How would Tom Daschle know? Who the hell informed him?

Is that Phase 2? When? When the real leadership says so I'll believe it.

I'm very impressed--with one day's work. Multiply this by about 500 times consecutively and I might feel atoned for the total abandonment of duty by the party in the last five years.

There is sill a long way to go, and we have at least three more years of the freaks. We should get back the House in 2006--I just cannot see how that is not realistic.

At any rate, we shall see. I still see nothing here in cover for the senators who voted for the war--a premptive war. I'm just a normal joe schmoe and I even i knew it was all a crock.

Assume for a second the son of a bitch had wmd. So do we. He had not attacked anyone in the last 10 years with them.

We have fallen very far indeed. Taking responsibility here will have to mean a lot more than shutting down the senate. [shrugs] We take what we can get.

It bums me out I have to live the rest of my life with this---USA, war felon nation, killing kids to keep the peace. With all the denial and lying. Another forty years to remember this, just wonderful. Man we did so fine, didn't we?

Posted by paradox at November 1, 2005 02:47 PM

How do we wage war on these birds and their WMD flu?

Posted by jake at November 1, 2005 02:53 PM

I wondered how long it would take Bush to come up with another big fear for the American people, since terra is waining.

I thought the new fear was the registered sex offenders being out on Halloween. Not that there's ever been an incidence, but just scary enough to get the soccer/security moms riled.

Posted by bbtb at November 1, 2005 03:32 PM

Soto:

One of the things I've said to you in the past is that just because the Dems aren't flying off the handle on a given day it doesn't mean they don't have a plan. Another thing I've said to you is that these guys (the Senate Dems) know more about timing that I or you ever will.

Reid didn't just pull this out of his ass, he used it when it was most effective, and it's gone off like an atom bomb. Let's give these guys - yes, Democrats - some props. They're taking national security away from the Republicans by beating the Reps to death with the war. And that's a good thing for all of us.

All the other issues are secondary. But if we can put national security first then Dems can rule this country, and that means all the things you and I care about will see the light of day.

Posted by at November 1, 2005 04:22 PM

Don't count on an angry populace to react too adversely to the faked WMD intel. Bush has anger going for him above all else. Americans will put up with a lot of shenanigans if in the end they think their military is killing Arabs and Muslims. That's what many, if not most, want. 9/11 seared our consciousness and if it takes torture, bombing civilians, losing American soldiers, loss of trust in the world, anything at all, they'll go along with it if the brown, godless horde from the Middle East is being slaughtered. Bush knows this and uses it. Stop counting your chickens.

There are people out every day in the ocean of flags planted on the esplanade here for those who have died in this personal war. We all know that w was going to do this. . . .let me count the reasons. . . reinforce his platform, prove himself, redeem the party . . . oh and trash everyone along the way.

It is done. The war is on. It is our collective responsibility to stop this lying. What Harry Reid did today was crucial.

Hope, for once.

For the next year as their coalition continues to erode, we'll hear the trolls use lines like "who has a majority" and "who won the last election." As if nothing has changed scince last year.

As the truth is now coming out, the 2002 and 2004 votes, both of which were decided by security minded independants, were largely decided on imcomplete infomation. Even worse, the infomation was incomplete because facts were kept from the voters. By this time next year the GOP will be as popular with security minded moderates as the tobbaco industry is with ex-smokers.

The Truth
Your comment was so good that I e-mail it. You tell it like it is. Hope it makes it all around the world
Here is what I add.

Today was a mention on Free Speech TV on Halliburton. Halliburton scam Well worth to check to see were your money goes.
Our congress and administration is unable to tell the truth.
I have seen in the last 3 years a congress out of control that have
pass laws right out of the WH, which means it was written by the
corporations. Most of those laws voted were given at the last minutes and
kept the vote open until they have change the vote to win. The Medicare,
Bankruptcy etc. There are so many more, you would not believe how they want
to destroy the middle class. That means us for the profits of the
billionaires. What they call the dead taxes now is an example; only the
rich had paid that tax. The little person who have a couple of $$$ did not
pay anything. Wait until they show the new tax bill. They want to reduce
the limit on house prices that you could deduct the interest from $1,000,000
to $200,000. That means that anyone who has bought a house lately will
loose.

Cheney's resident lapdog! Another one is senator Session. Does anyone notice how he spends most of his time to kiss ass every time he is on c-span. When he questions someone on his committee He does try to help them. He is a joke from Alabama.

paradox Unless they steal the election again like the last 3. A comment in another site, someone had just watch print of a soldier who just came back from Iraq. He was Upset and scare of what we are turning our youth into cold blood killer. He saw in is office people gun down no insurgents but kids, women and old people and wander why the voice was so calm while killing.

Robert Fisk of the “Independent UK” was been refuse access in the US. He has reported war for a long time. Did see Osama, , probably the last person who did, describe all the wrong as he was not in-bedded with the US forces said that he has no hope for the future. Not the way he seeing it right now with these leaders,
