Comments: GOP A Little Too Cocky Today

Amen Steve, who cares about the nuclear option. Former Sen. Alan Simpson said they were a bunch of idiots if they tried to go nuke. He said they very well may be in the minority soon and they will be left with no recourse. Bunch of fools they are.

Posted by Ga6thDem at November 1, 2005 05:13 PM

"And lastly Ace, we’re no longer worried about you nimrods springing the nuclear option. Go for it."

If necessary, the Republicans will cite Bryd's change of the filibuster rule in the 1970s. (You folks know Senator Bryd. The fellow from the Klu Klux Klan.)

Posted by Bagley at November 1, 2005 05:25 PM

Teehee... doesn't that picture make Reid look like God, about to smite the Republicans?

Memo to self: never get into an argument with Mr. Soto.

Go, Steve, go!!!!

Posted by Herman at November 1, 2005 05:37 PM

Well, Teddy likes him.

SEN. TED KENNEDY (D-MA):

“You Have Obviously Had A Very Distinguished Record, And I Certainly Commend You For Long Service In The Public Interest. I Think It Is A Very Commendable Career And I Am Sure You Will Have A Successful One As A Judge.”

(Sen. Ted Kennedy, Committee On The Judiciary, U.S. Senate, Hearing, Judge Alito’s first confirmation - in April of 1990.)

Posted by Bagley at November 1, 2005 05:41 PM

Soto:

Go ahead and keep thinking that you have the votes for Alito.

Of course the Republicans have the votes for Alito. All that the Democrats have are childish stunts.

How about a caption thread for that great photo
In this hand I have Frists, and over here will soon be Bushs' balls.

So, then, I took 'em by the balls and twisted, only a little, mind you, and they squealed like piglets.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 1, 2005 05:57 PM

Toby,
How does it feel to be a tool? We would really like to know?

Childish? Of course, only you would think that national security is a child's issue. Do tell us now when you think Joe Wilson is going to be indicted? Oops, you were played for dupe on that one too. Your dupe-o-meter must be exploding! LOL

Posted by Ga6thDem at November 1, 2005 06:02 PM

childish stunts withstanding, what the Dems don't have is the chief of staff of Vice President Cheney headed to prison. The Dems don't have the Genius behind the president wee-weeing in his pants every night waiting for his indictment to come. The Dems don't have a disaster named Frist and a crook named DeLay. The Dems do have a guy, unbecoming as he may be, named Reid who is eating them up and spitting out the seeds. Oh, and one other thing the Dems have....two-thirds or more of the citizens of the country on their side.

Leftcoaster was just mentioned on LKL by Joe.

bagley keep your asswipe opinions to yourself loser....

Posted by headxray at November 1, 2005 06:34 PM

T2, 2/3 of Americans on your side? Hmmm. I don't remember you winning any elections recently to back up that claim. As usual your wishing really hard.

This move by the Dem's this afternoon was an act of total desperation. You guys thought last week that you had Bush - finally!!! Finally you were going to destroy his Presidency. And as an added bonus he had nominated someone who was causing turmoil in his own party. How great it was for you just a week ago.

And now it's so different. Bush has chosen someone who has united his base and fired them up. And then Reid comes along and pulls this stunt this afternoon. You have no idea what a god-send this is to conservatives. Bush re-kindled the fire with Alito and Harry Reid just sent it a blazing this afternoon.

Keep this up. Just like the Wellstone Memorial in 2002, the forged documents last year, and now this. You guys have lost EVERY time the debate is about Iraq and/or foreign policy. We love it when you focus on this issue. Keep focusing on it next summer when more elections have occurred in Iraq and thousands of troops are coming home.

And another side effect of today: With this slap to Frist and the republican majority you have just kissed your filibuster goodbye. You have so angered normally calm Republican senators that I doubt we will have any trouble breaking the filibuster now.

Than you very much!!!!! (I mean that too).

Posted by The Real Truth at November 1, 2005 06:44 PM

Toby, Since you guys think outing a CIA agent is just Hardball Politics, what's the problem with what Reid did? He just played hardball, the problem is the GOP didn't expect it.

Posted by Goose1 at November 1, 2005 06:45 PM

This is the first time in a looong while that I can say dems enjoy a clear tactical advantage—aside from the sheer numbersn they used to enjoy—in Congress.

Harry OWNs Frist at this point. A leader of only 45 senators today managed (1) to shift attention off a new Supreme Court nominee (a nominee intended to right the foundering Bush ship o' state, no less), AND (2) to wring out a concession to renew the "Phase 2" investigation into intelligence manipulation that Roberts thought he had already buried.

Two thoughts on the level of talent in play here: One, Daschle would never have pulled off such a maneuver; two, Lott would never have let him get away with it.

Posted by dj moonbat at November 1, 2005 06:47 PM

God bless Harry Reid. Now if the other Democrats had the guts (are you listening Hillary?) to actively oppose the harm that the Republicans are doing to this country, perhaps we can turn around all this destruction by winning the Congress in 2006.

Posted by Cookie Monster at November 1, 2005 06:48 PM

Finally you were going to destroy his Presidency.

See, this is the point where you wander off into fantasyland. We never thought any such thing. We figured jr could destroy his own presidency quite nicely himself.

Which he has.

And devoid of some vast left wing conspiricy, which only exists in your remaining brain cell and Rush's oxy-addeled mind.

But thanks for playing.

We love it when you focus on this issue. Keep focusing on it next summer when more elections have occurred in Iraq and thousands of troops are coming home.

If you think this occupation will be over by summer, you're delusional. Even the administration expects us to be there for several years more. And apparently the American people as a whole don't like that idea. Look for that. Remember that in the meantime, more of our soldiers will die. If it wasn't for a damn good reason, we should cut our losses, and I think most would agree.

You mention that we haven't won elections. Fair enough. It's the pendulum of politics - parties switch out all the time. The 30s and 40s had Democrats, the Republicans had the 50s, Dems had 60s and 70s, Republicans had 80s, and the Dems had the 90s. It will swing to our people once more. Try to look at the bigger picture - you're not special, you're not more rational, and you're not right, no matter what Daddy Limbaugh tells you so you can pat yourself on the back.

Reid does look like a veangeful deity, weighing the administration in his scales of justice. I love how the ceiling looks like a halo, while his guardian angels flank him approvingly. Rove himself couldn't have masterminded a more fitting photo.

Posted by DukeRevolution at November 1, 2005 07:14 PM

A most Rovian type maneuver Mr. Reid...we need more of them!!

Kudos, on the mention from Joe Wilson on Larry King Live!!

Posted by bbtb at November 1, 2005 07:18 PM

For the next year as their coalition continues to erode, we'll hear the trolls use lines like "who has a majority" and "who won the last election." As if nothing has changed scince last year.

As the truth is now coming out, the 2002 and 2004 votes, both of which were decided by security minded independants, were largely decided on imcomplete infomation. Even worse, the infomation was incomplete because facts were kept from the voters. By this time next year the GOP will be as popular with security minded moderates as the tobbaco industry is with ex-smokers.

What a lot of foul-mouthed garbage. I'm sure Steve Soto is cringing at the shit quality of his commiserators.

Harry Reid is in absolutely no position to capitalize on anything or move the agenda one inch to the left. Forget it. The votes are there to make Alito's nomination stick and the impatience in the electorate is sufficient to preclude any filibustering.

How about if you people did a little more to uphold your end of the bargain in this essentially two-party system we've got going here and provide some balance? Too much work? Much more fun and easy to loiter about and tear things down?

Judith, if every political development is The Absolute Turning Point in the History of American Civilization, then that means that none of them is. Do try to rein in your hyperbole; it will make it easier to deal with the reality of your party's failures.

Childish? Of course, only you would think that national security is a child's issue.

I don't believe for one minute that you actually care about Valerie Plame's identity. It's just something for you to use, like all good propaganda.

Do tell us now when you think Joe Wilson is going to be indicted? Oops, you were played for dupe on that one too. Your dupe-o-meter must be exploding! LOL

Wilson is self-indicting. I'll see to that myself.

Watching CNN - 'Larry King Live' - Joe Wilson talked up 'The Last Coaster' coverage of the Plame debacle, along with 'Talking Points Memo.'

Posted by at November 1, 2005 09:33 PM

Impatiens of the electorate?

What the hell is that supposed to mean, and please, please, please, care to quantify that in some way, with some factual support?

The only one impatient has been bushie and his handlers, from day one. Coz they couldn't wait to get their hands on all that dough.

Posted by Duckman GR at November 1, 2005 09:34 PM

I'm betting that Alito will have to wait for his rejection or filibuster until next year. Looks like Sandra Day O'Conner will have to carry on until Bush find someone more reasonable to replace her. The public will be patient, Toby, in fact, I think they'll be watching Bush and the Repubs pretty closely to see what further shit they will be stepping in! Fun stuff!

______

YOU are lecturing US on upholding our end of the bargain and providing balance as YOUR party deep throats the engorged cock of the unelected radical Christkilling rightwing and tries to ram your evil lies down the gullet of America?

Fuck you very much. The electorate is impatient, you're right about that, but the target of their impatience is 180 degrees from what you think it is. The target of their impatient is libelous, slanderous, truth-fucking, lie-spewing, criminal-enabling traitors like yourself.

So fuck you, bitch, and the horse cock you rode in on. You rotten scum have been treating this nation like a battered wife...but she woke up, shithead, and she's got a can of gas and a book of matches and she's staring down at your smug ass snoozing obliviously in the bed that you've defiled and that she's about to torch.

God of War,

That was simultaneously the most horrifying and disturbing, yet the hilarious, well-written comment I've ever seen. Ever. I don't think I've ever laughed out loud here before. It was so horribly poetic.

Toby, we don't want your advice on how to run things. We'll tear it down before we rebuild it. Isn't that how wars are fought?

Posted by DukeRevolution at November 1, 2005 10:12 PM

Well, Alito is a slam dunk on qualifications. And that's all that matters. His ideology isn't too radical. So, he'll Bader-Ginsberg his way in.

No doubt on this one.

I'm interested on how the Dems and GOP will compromise on the Tax Reform proposals. I kind of wonder what's going on behind closed doors. Maybe some pork negotiations for easing Alito in. That'd be my guess. There's some give and take going on back there.

Posted by muckdog at November 1, 2005 10:54 PM

Hey Bagley - that's some hard work you did there copy-and-paste'ing the RNC talking points (one can tell because of their Nasty Habit Of Capitalizaing Every Single Word In Their Press Releases).

Posted by Scipio at November 1, 2005 10:57 PM

Muckdog, the tax reform "compromise" will probably consist of Republicans not proposing this nonsense in exchange for Democrats not campaigning on it. Eliminate mortgage interest deductions? Eliminate state and local tax deductions? Tom DeLay couldn't whip a majority for this on his best day, and he's way off his best.

As for Alito, Harry Reid cracked open the gates of Hell for those enthused over the "nuclear option"- every day could be like this if you end the filibuster. Alito has some explaining to do about why he wants to strip-search 10-year-olds and sell people machine guns, let alone his pre-Enlightenment views of marriage.

Yeah, we've heard time and time again how person X or initiative X was a slam dunk. Do you think Americans won't care about his ruling regarding strip searching little girls? Do you think that Americans won't care that Strip Search Sammy thinks that the Gov. should be involved in every personal and private decision families make? He's a Terri Schiavo judge-he's kind of a Sharia Law person. He believes in restricting the rights of Americans, not keeping them much less expanding them.

A Little Brainstorming -

Who expects Roberts to suddenly fire up the investigation and conduct it with zeal?

Who expects Roberts to subpoena witnesses about the Niger forgeries and their possible use in misleading Congress and the Senate as to why America should declare war on Iraq?

Very few people would expect this behavior, based on the stalling to date.

So, where will that leave the Democrats in the Senate? High and dry?

No. Just read what Senator Rockefeller said yesterday: if Roberts does not start Phase II then the Democrats will call for an independent investigation.

And, as truepatriot on Hullaballoo has mentioned, the minority Senators seem to have the power (without needing Republican support), to start just such an investigation, with subpoena powers etc.

So, how is that for a "nuclear option"? Only this time, with respect to the Iraq war, and in the hands of the Democrats.

If I was First or Roberts, I would be very worried about this "Iraq Nuclear Option" that Reid holds ...
