Comments: AP/Ipsos Poll: Bush Approval Down To 37% - Again, Slippage In The Base

Well, you'll appreciate this one from Andrew Tobias' blog...

A sign recently seen in Washington: “Would someone please give him a [explicit sex act deleted] so we can impeach him?”

Here's another number; 2042

Guess what it signifies.

What the hell is going on with all the heavy casualty numbers? I really would have expected an attempt to minimize U.S. casualties. It's scary to think that we might be trying to minimize deaths and still facing these escalating figures.

Good news -- but to be fair, note that the breakdown in the poll is 49-40 Dems to Reps. I griped about this when it was the other way around in polls (a la CNN/Gallup) so don't want to be a hypocrite.

So George 41 wins the popularity contest with George 43. Ironic given how W. has tried so hard to show up his father.

Again, is this a sign that the cultists are wandering away?

Cultists? Please.. they're called wackos.

Again, is this a sign that the cultists are wandering away?

The more faint-hearted wacko cultists are jumping the ship. More discipline needed.

The question has always been how big is Bush's core base? It looks like after the faint-hearted are all stripped away it is about 25-30% of the electorate. Still, that's an amazing number of reality-deniers and religious radicals.

Maybe Mao understood this problem when he set up his re-education camps.

Bush's base has alywas been at around 38%.

Kos noted today that approval for Cheney is at 19%. Those 19% are the true pod people, the no-hope-for motherfuckers, nothing in this lifetime will ever get them to see the truth.

In the last four weeks about 3% of the base has shifted from Bush. Possibly 16% more can see the light, the Cheney 19% are hopeless. It's huge news because in six years it never budged at all below 38-40%.

Trolls are spitting mad tonight. They're mad at us, of course. Like we're the ones who started the war, smashed the budget and humiliated us profoundly with Katrina. Always anything but looking at themselves.

Well, 3% of your brethren just turned traitor, homies. Get used to it, it will get much worse than this.

I heard this this morning. I didn't find it all that enlightening -- Army Brig. Gen. Joseph Votel explained that the ratio has gone down, i.e. more attacks but fewer casualties per attack.

It just doesn't add up for me though. The numbers keep going up and we've been there for 2+ years. Why? I know . . .

Sorry, to clarify, my above comment was in response to snark and dj.

There was also a story reported on icasualties.org that our troops are firing off .50 caliber ammo faster than it can be replaced. What the fuck is with that? We're two plus years in fighting an insurgency that's supposedly in it's last throes and we're expending that much ammo? Those poor guys must do nothing but lay down fire anytime they leave their bases.

Posted by snark at November 4, 2005 06:47 PM

Cheney has asked for troop enlargement. Doesn't sound like they are winding down, does it?

Posted by Judith at November 4, 2005 08:41 PM

Not that I want to boost Bush's poll numbers, but in the interests of honesty, a 49-40 split in favor of the Dems as reported in this thread would, if true, probably indicate Bush's true approval rating at about 42 percent. Just being intellectually honest here, as others on the thread are also doing. Still, low 40s is pretty damn pathetic for a "war" president.

I should not make an observation regarding ground suppression fire, but I think it simply translates to "I'm going to make it home. Repeat. I am.."

During the last dog days of really heavy US involvement in Vietnam (69 - 71), it was "I am not going to be the last one..". Can you blame any single soldier in Iraq for breaking the three-burst rule, especially with a 50 cal.? I think not.

Posted by tempus at November 4, 2005 10:22 PM

They just want to come home.

Posted by tempus at November 4, 2005 10:30 PM

2043

Posted by Judith at November 5, 2005 02:11 AM

Looks like a new offensive on the border of Syria. What a surprise. They're reporting 2 more of our soldiers killed. Also, those .50 cals are coming from WWII stockpiles now. Major shortage going on. Sheesh.

Posted by iamcoyote at November 5, 2005 05:22 AM

2043. At this rate, we are looking at 3,000 dead in just a little more than a year. Let's also not forget the 15,000 who were wounded and some badly enough that they cannot return to military duty. Then add those who are still on active duty, but have psychological problems, but fight on, or live with the threat of being called back to fight another day.

Posted by Judith at November 5, 2005 06:44 AM

Hey, don't worry about those 50 cal shells----they're like Doritos, we can always make more!

And think of all the fabulous jobs!----who can beat working in a munitions plant? Lucky ducks.

And it's a job with a future in hyper-militarized America.

Posted by euzoius at November 5, 2005 07:36 AM

euzoius,

I know that your being sarcastic, but did you know that we buy our ammo. from Taiwan and Israel? Even our ammo. production has been outscorced!

Posted by rlp at November 5, 2005 07:45 AM

rlp---nope, I did not know that.

Good Christ, another benefit of globalization.

But it still looks like a great investment opportunity for all our divine entrepreneurs!

Posted by euzoius at November 5, 2005 07:52 AM

Just what in the hell is produced in this Country?

Folks keep talking about "the base" for bush support. What is Arabic for "the base?" Why it's "al-queda." Hmm... Just a thought...
