The so called neocons are neither Republican or Conservative. Radical yes, and more appropriately named neofascists. They promote a state modeled after Mussolini's "Corporativo Estado".
Posted by m at November 5, 2005 06:36 AMWhen you have a group that wants to gain power and limit the governments ability to do anything this is what you get. Promise tax cuts as the panciea and get the votes to win. This is the end result of Reaganism. Reagan tought conservatives that "deficets don't matter" and they learned well. The most effective way to "starve the beast" is to run up debts. There are sworse things than paying taxes and America may soon learn that the hard way. Once this is over, the Republicans should be kept away from power until they grow up fiscally.
Posted by rlp at November 5, 2005 07:23 AMWe're like the greatest Latin American debtor nation in history, only when the bond-holders start demanding that we behave in a fiscally responsible manner (as we do with say, Argentina), we'll haughtily refuse----"Nobody tells Amurica what the fuck to do!!"
Get ready for a historic fiscal meltdown---this is an experiment with no real precedent. The Republican Party truly is criminal.
Posted by euzoius at November 5, 2005 07:46 AMFiscal irresponsibility always ends badly. The usual way out is via inflation. Paying back a deficit with devalued dollars is the least painful way out. Governments always end up with this solution eventually.
My short essay on the whole, ugly future:
Coming Crash
Good piece, Mr. Feinman, thanks.
My only quibble would be that we worked hard for about a decade (1993-2000) to reverse the fiscal insanity, and were making progress.
And now the insane Bush adminstration and Republican Congress has thrown it all away and made the situation immeasurably worse!

Posted by ike at November 5, 2005 08:43 AMWhen the time comes for this debt to be paid off, pray for no Democrat to be in office. It'll be far too easy to have the blame posted on him.
Posted by DukeRevolution at November 5, 2005 12:11 PMThe Republicans have had control of the money side of the Congress since 1995. That's ten years.
Yet I hear Democrats called tax and spend Democrats every day.
Just how long will it take this bit of conventional wisdom to die, anyways?
