Not to rain on anyone's parade, but Inland empire is largely red -- could be the big turnout is from all those churches getting their folks to the polls for 73.
Posted by Garbo at November 8, 2005 05:30 PMThe only reason 73 is on the ballot is to bring out the wingers for the other issues.
Any talk of Arnold and his issues going down in flames is premature and bad karma. My mind goes back to working precincts in Las Vegas suburbs last November. Drivers honking their horns, giving us the thumbs up. A guy yells out the window that Kerry has taken Florida and Ohio and that Zogby is calling the race for Kerry. Then . . .
So I really don't like to talk until the final score is in.
That's all I'm sayin'
Posted by James E. Powell at November 8, 2005 05:54 PMOn another weird karmic note -- Colorado had it's election last Tuesday, and on Halloween at 4:30 pm, I stopped by the election center to see if I could get my mother an absentee ballot. Friday was the cutoff, and she didn't want to go to the polling place -- so, I'd failed on my familial Yes on C & D GOTV duty. Oh well . . .
But that's not the weird part. When I got back in my minivan on Monday, it was hard to start, wouldn't run right, and kept stalling. I managed to limp home, but it turns out the #1 piston had thrown a ring -- so I'm now shopping for a vehicle.
I'm not sure what the lesson is -- but don't count your victories before the Diebold is shut off, and don't put off the GOTV until the last minute.
Posted by ck at November 8, 2005 06:15 PMI'm here in south eastern O.C. - I was surprised to see all the voting booths full... don't know what it means. They did consolidate a bunch of polling places (mine moved AGAIN) and you had to be pretty motivated to find the place... but still, looked to be a better turnout than I've seen previously.
Posted by OldCoastie at November 8, 2005 06:52 PMpessimist, Mind me asking what part of CA, you from? I grew up in San Jose, I have family up and down the coast and some in Modesto.
Posted by bbtb at November 8, 2005 07:30 PMIn San Francisco, I've been knocking and dragging all day for the Alliance, and I have to say it doesn't look great. People are voting, but not the people we have on our lists of targets. So far I'd say it's about 20% or less. Pretty sucky.
Posted by Jen Ancona at November 8, 2005 07:33 PMTexas proves that if the Right controls the Church, the vote will be to the Right. The question is simple: how do citizens on the Left, who go to Church, exert an equal vote? I assume some on the Left go to Church, don't they.......or are we on the Left just a bunch of non-believers???????? maybe.
Posted by T2 at November 8, 2005 07:38 PMI'm in Salinas, CA. I don't know too much about voters here because I've only been here a short time. However, of those I spoke to there was a strong sentiment that this vote was as important, if not more, than the presidential election last year. When I dropped off my absentee ballot, I was surprised that a) there were so many people there, and b) that there were so many young hispanic men there - either as volunteers or as voters.
Of the little that I have heard, and feel comfortable commenting on, Hispanics in this city are very dissappointed in the governator. They voted for him because they didn't take it seriously - having the Terminator as gov seemed cool, I guess - but now they realize the impact on their lives.
God, I hope this shit doesn't pass. Even the ones that are heavily supported by Dems. I want this to be a huge stain on Arnold.
Posted by me at November 8, 2005 08:24 PMI live in San Francisco, and last night as i went out to eat, everyone on the streets were wearing their "I Voted" stickers proudly. They were everywhere. I was even a little ashamed that i took mine off after work; feeling very un-hip in the moment.
And as i saw each one, i knew it was a vote against Arnold. I didn't even need to stay up to watch the poll returns. He's done in politics.
Posted by at November 9, 2005 11:51 AMWell shit, how did Arnie become Governor anyway? I remember Californians voted him in with great enthusiasm. Movie actors are scums of the earth. Remember Reagan? Who kicked off his campaign in Philadelphia, Mississippi? A total racist fuck-up? Remember Bitburg cemetary? Ronnie wanted to pay tribute to the SS officers who died in WW2? Name recognition and star quality don't belong in politics. Sonny Bono met his tree. May we hang Bush from one eventually.
