Impeachment is the right course of action, but with the Republican control of Congress and the media, it will never happen.
Posted by Cookie Monster at January 15, 2006 01:19 PMYep - Specter even renegged on Alito - I believe his position was he would not confirm if Alito was in favor of overturning Roe/Wade. And we all know now how Alito would vote.
Posted by DOT at January 15, 2006 01:34 PMThe whole Impeachment cannard can actually be a winning issue-- if played smartly. No way can Dems realistically get any traction, UNLESS they frame the issue as Replicants are more loyal to their party than they are to the country. They value power over principles. Not a single word should flow from any Dem's mouth that doesn't have a "Nixon" talking point link to it. Every talking head, every pundit, every mouth piece should keep hammering how Nixonian this Administartion is: including the same shady cast of recycled characters, starting with Cheney and Rummy... Bush is the ghost of Nixon past...
Posted by tjschill at January 15, 2006 01:41 PMI mean it's way to early to tell, but I wouldn't expect to see to much motion on this, elections are in November and the Abramoff scandal is clouding capitol hill, for many Republican or Democrat the idea of starting an impeachment proceeding before an election would probably seem dangerous, and also threatening if there is backlash.
Outside of that though, I think the first step is determining if a law was broken, that in and of itself is cause for hearings and investigation, and then, we pray, impeachment.
Posted by gary from twodems at January 15, 2006 01:41 PMIt isn't that he won't betray you. He will.
It's that he said it. The I-word. Good enough for the likes of him.
Posted by sagesource at January 15, 2006 01:45 PMThe Prosecution Rests Its Case: Verdict - Guilty
President Bush is guilty of lying to the American people and violating international law. Both are serious offenses but to ignore the latter is a disservice to the United Nations, to American soldiers who have sacrificed their lives and to the people of Iraq who have died or suffered at the hands of this war criminal.
...so why should we trust Specter?
We shouldn't...
While signing the "Spy on anyone" order, Bush was getting a B.J. in the ovular office- does THAT count for impeachment?
Posted by TIKI AL at January 15, 2006 02:24 PMThere is only one thing in life that is as probable as the leaders of the Crime Syndicate of Washington (also known as the GOP) even taking impeachment of King George seriously, let alone voting to impeach him.
That one thing is Jesus Christ coming down to earth to stop the Crime Syndicate.
The latter is not going to happen; so, the former isn't either.
Specter's words are well chosen for a man whose sole purpose in the Judiciary Committee is to service King George and his Far Right supporters. He gains "credibility" in the minds of the conservative traditional media (aka "MSM") for *saying* the forbidden words, and when he later pronounces King George's actions to be legal (cue Alito, Roberts, et al. providing "expert testimony"), Stephanopoulous et al. will be on their knees worshipping Lord Specter and his "centrism" and "impartiality" and how he was even willing to put his King on the line (not).
"Democrats" like Dianne Feinstein will then worship at Specter's altar saying how Specter is the next best thing to sliced bread and how his "demeanor" shows he's the greatest guy in the United States. (I suspect this will occur just before she faxes in her application to switch over to the GOP since by then she would have regurgitated just about every Republican talking point required to earn admission into The Party).
Posted by eriposte at January 15, 2006 02:33 PMImpeach Bush and get Cheney as president. I've got to give you guys that, you definitely are a group of geniuses.
As for the Zogby poll, isn't it a bit, shall we say, disingenuous? Or perhaps just a bit lacking in context and facts?
I do believe the warrantless wiretaps were conducted on people talking to international targets, it's funny how none of that context made its way into Zogby's question.
But hey, have an investigation. Let's get it all out in the open: who did they eavesdrop on, and why?
If it turns out that the Bush administration was listening in on calls from terrorists or suspected terrorist entities to US terror cells or other persons, then I think this might be the biggest boondoggle the Democrats will have come up with yet.
I seriously doubt proving that Bush was taking his job seriously after 9/11 would help the Democrats in the 2006 elections.
When most of the prominent Democrats who actually knew what was going on with the NSA wiretaps have not called for impeachment, much less called for hearings (as far as I know, please correct me if I'm wrong), I'd say that the ignorant left-wing senators calling for these things might want to have a chat with their buddies to see whether or not this whole thing might backfire in a huge way.
Posted by Seixon at January 15, 2006 06:11 PMnever trust a republican senator, ever. they are all pathological liars. impeach them all, or else bring back public hanging and flogging of public officials. if waterboarding is good enough for al-qaeda suspects then it's good enough for anyone in this congress.
Posted by surferlea at January 15, 2006 06:18 PM>>> "I do believe the warrantless wiretaps were conducted on people talking to international targets"
You can *believe* all you want. The *fact* is that purely domestic calls were also tapped and the NYT already reported this a while ago (link) while you were busy regurgitating the GOP talking points.
P.S. Multiple Democrats in Congress have called for hearings or investigations.
Posted by eriposte at January 15, 2006 07:34 PM52% + 43% + 6% = 101%
Yep, looks unanimous to me.

Well, I am sure your right-wing pundits have told you the above, but facts are emerging that journalists, peace groups, anti-war groups were also on the list.
"I do believe the warrantless wiretaps were conducted on people talking to international targets"
Without a warrant...stunning! Simply the most repulsive thing I've heard one of your ilk spew. You accept it and you condone it. Next time you're masturbating in your cubicle while thinking about your gun, think to yourself how you trashed the Bill of Rights and jeopardized the 2nd with your lunacy. That should take your woody away.

Hey Einstein. It's called rounding. Get a clue.
Well, I am sure your right-wing pundits have told you the above, but facts are emerging that journalists, peace groups, anti-war groups were also on the list.
Really, or is that what your DailyKos handlers want you to think?
You can *believe* all you want. The *fact* is that purely domestic calls were also tapped and the NYT already reported this a while ago (link) while you were busy regurgitating the GOP talking points.
Yeah, and the NYT reported the following as well:
The officials say the National Security Agency's interception of a small number of communications between people within the United States was apparently accidental, and was caused by technical glitches at the National Security Agency in determining whether a communication was in fact "international."
So, as I was saying, the targets of the eavesdropping was calls between international targets and domestic persons. When you catch something else by mistake, you are obviously not targetting that thing. I didn't know that the NYT was running GOP talking points... lol.
P.S. Multiple Democrats in Congress have called for hearings or investigations.
Yes, and were any of those privy to the NSA wiretaps program as it was taking place? I'm not talking about left-wing senators that don't give a damn about whether or not this was being done for a good reason or not. I'm talking about reasonable Democrat senators who were briefed on the program and kept their mouth shut about it, for some odd reason.
Posted by Seixon at January 16, 2006 10:52 AMFISA protects all communications in which there is a United States Party from warrantless surveillence, so one "end" of the communication is within the protection of the statute.
Posted by euzoius at January 16, 2006 02:04 PMFunny how the short term memories of the loony-left always pop back into focus. Some seem to forget the warrentless searches/wire tapping by Bubba on several US citizens (with no relation to foreign terrorists calling into the US) Unless it was the Sudanese calling the Prez to hand over Bin Laden, those calls were ignored.
The logic-challenged Left will get a wake-up call with the Cisneros scandal coming to light again this week. This is where Mr. Clinton's White House acted with Nixon-like fortitude by hindering the FBI investigation of the disgraced, 'culture of corruption' HUD secretary.
Oh, the good old days.
Posted by Tony Malone at January 17, 2006 01:46 AMSenator Feinstein, You Cannot Possibly be that Stupid!
"I don't see those kinds of egregious things emerging requiring a filibuster," Feinstein said on CBS' "Face the Nation" yesterday. "I might disagree with him. That doesn't mean that he doesn't have credentials to serve on the Supreme Court."
Senator Feinstein, you cannot possibly be that stupid. Gutless yes, but you cannot, cannot, cannot possibly be that stupid! The idea that the real issue here is whether or not Alito has the credentials to serve on the Supreme Court is beyond moronic. In six months Alito could be deciding issues concerning George W. Bush’s impeachment hearings. What the **** are you talking about – YOU IDIOT! Bush only attained office in 2000 with the collusion of the Supreme Court – packed with partisan hacks put there by every Republican President from Nixon on up – the first criteria having nothing to do with competence but everything with a willingness to vote party line despite what the law says. Where were you when Clarence Thomas lied his way into the Supreme Court? Where is your short-term memory, shot to hell? In 2000 Al Gore and the Democratic Party rolled over and played dead. Have you gone senile? You can’t possibly believe that the Bush Presidency is legitimate and if that Presidency is not legitimate than none of his appointments are either. Or are you just talking rubbish like every other slimeball politician?
Do you remember George W. Bush speaking non-partisanship after ostensibly winning a presidential election by 537 votes, when, without the intersession of the Supreme Court, a recount would have given the Presidency to Al Gore? NON-PARTISENSHIP, what the **** do you think that means? 537 votes out of six million, then Bush went on to appoint rightwing hacks, cronies and incompetents to every possible post. What he said concerning non-partisanship was an outright lie. Senator Feinstein, WHAT THE **** could you possibly be talking about saying that George W. Bush has the right to legitimately appoint anyone to any post in the US government? YOU COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE THAT STUPID. You can’t be! George W. Bush has been a lame duck President since he was first made President by the Supreme Court of the United States. Next year if the Republican Party wins a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress then let him try to appoint a dogcatcher.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND!! - You mealy mouthed MORON. Finally you and I and America know that Bush and Chaney and their entire cast of quacks have lied through every orifice of their bodies. Their propaganda machines strew out lie after lie after lie. They have LOOTED this nation, driven us into DEBT, benefiting only themselves and their cronies - getting rich on the Iraq War while our troops, American men and women, continue to die. Rebuilding, we were supposed to REBUILD IRAQ. American people pay while friends of the Bush administration get rich. They didn’t act to prevent the disaster in New Orleans when it might have cost a few billion dollars, BUT THEY AND THEIR FRIENDS WILL GROW 200 BILLION DOLLARS RICHER rebuilding another city they have destroyed as they destroyed Baghdad and Iraq more fully than Saddam every could. They grow richer as reward for their own malfeasance and corruption.
Do you have any memory at all? Do you remember the summer of 2001, the California energy crisis manufactured by Kenneth Lay and George W. Bush’s other friends at Enron? How many Republican and Democrats got rich off money stolen from the hard working middle class of America? Why didn’t you speak up as courageously then as you have about Alito?
NOW THAT IT HAS BECOME OBVIOUS, THE CULPABLE MALFEASANCE OF THOSE LIARS AND THIEVES HAS BECOME SO OBVIOUS THAT THEY CAN NO LONGER COVER IT UP, YOU ARE SAYING THAT THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO APPOINT THE VERY PEOPLE WHO MAY SOON BE PRESIDING OVER THEIR OWN JUDGEMENT!
You cannot be that STUPID. Who has gotten to you? Have they threatened you? Who has paid you off? What do they have on you? Have they set you up for a piece of the profits when your days in the Senate are done? Those are the only reasons you could possibly have for saying something so irresponsibly GUTLESS AND STUPID.
THE QUESTION IS, WHEN John Kerry said that he would have voted for the Iraq War even if he had known the Bush administration was lying about the WMDs, and when Al Gore and the Democratic Party rolled over and played dead in 2000, and when Kerry and the Democratic Party rolled over and played dead after intimations of out and out fraud after the election – AND IN the corruption associated with the disasters that are Iraq and New Orleans, and the manipulation of energy supplies and prices that cost the citizens of America’s western states billions of dollars and even with that, the subsequent failure of George W. Bush’s friends at Enron, costing thousands of families their livelihoods – AND AT the blatant corruption and influence peddling of Tom Delay AND THE illegal not to say treasonous activities of Karl Rove and impeachable offences of Bush in spying on America, IN ALL THIS and everything else boiling right under the eyes of anyone not totally blind, were you and Al Gore and John Kerry and John Edwards and the now silently gutless Hilary Clinton and all the other powerful so called Democratic leaders in the Senate and US House of representatives, were you merely silent accomplices to all this or from the beginning were all of you right there in on the take? Because you cannot possibly be as stupid as your words indicate. It is not possible. Now GET SOME GUTS before it is too late. ALITO can become a Justice of the Supreme Court if AND ONLY IF the Republicans win a two-thirds majority of the Senate in next year’s elections. In that case I can only pray that you are among the ones who lose their jobs.
DDISR
FUNNY describes DDISR above. Talk about the loony-left. This one takes the cake! I mean DD still talks about the 2000 election!?!? Anyone who has 2 brain cells knows that the Gore camp made the case to the SC a loser from the beginning by asking for the re-count in only 3 counties and not the whole state. Facts like that fly on by when one is so far left he/she even curses Feinstein! Gore's camp knew that if they would have re-counted the whole state, as the left-leaning Miami Herald did, he would have lost by an even bigger margin. Just a shame what drugs do to the semi-retarded DDISR.
One question for your low IQ: If Bush was lying about the WMD EVEN SYRIA KNEW HE HAD, why didn't he get 10 Ollie North-like Marines to plant some WMD at the beginning of the war to end any discussion? You Liberals are great on conspiracy theories, what about that one?
Oh, yea, THAT conspiracy theory was in-line waiting for when the US found the 8,000 litres of liquid Anthrax that Bllix saw with his own eyes in 1999. Too bad.
I guess the 17 UN resolutions fly right by you too.
Sad, really sad.
