It does not matter what you want the Democrats to talk about unless we shame the networks to force the corporate network to tell the truth. They are always absents of any real new but the Repugs news.
They are the one working for the corporation and do their work. We do know more about Michael Jackson than any demonstration again the WAR???? How sad that they do say; “They are giving us the facts” as they are lying to us ever days!
I am mad that the Democrats are giving up on Alito, I know he is a good man, but he will give king george all he want, an psychopath that can not even speak in public without putting 2 words together without messing it up! English is my 2 languages; even I can not accept that he is so stupid. What he says does not make any sense most of the time.
It looks like a tsunami. I keep hoping that the Democrats will get the spine and filibuster Alito. I ask each reader to take a minute and call his/her senators for a "NO" vote on the Alito confirmation. Follow the call with an email. If the senator is a Democrat, ask the senator to filibuster and stop Alito. Given the approval rating of Bush, a defeat of Alito in the Senate would be a victory for our privacy rights. Bush needs to get the message that his nominations have been extreme right wing. Scalia and Kennedy will be 70 years old in 2006. Some people live a long time, but 70 is often a transition when health fails. Bush could again appoint extreme judges that will be there a long time.
Posted by prabhata at January 17, 2006 01:06 AMConcerning the NSA and the FBI, this situation has the aroma of a controlled destruction (think about how the Towers came down). Can it be that the FBI was just waiting for the right moment to unload? Could they also be getting some help from friends at Langley, who aren't too happy to be the scapegoat for George's Crude Crusade not going well? It's too coordinated to be much of anything else.
As for Hitchens and Hillary, the odor of opportunity reeks! When Hitchens dropped his considerable liberal creds to back George, he demonstrated that he had no principles. As for Hillary, she had her chances to demonstrate opposition to the antics of the neo-conmen, maybe even allying with Feingold to form a principled opposition, but instead backed George all the way. To come out and attack now on issues that were old two years ago is piling on.
As for the Democrats - we'll see. With Alito the latest and most crucial disappointment, one that will radically affect this nation for at least a generation, one doesn't hold out much hope that the cavalry is finally riding to the rescue. But considering the myiad of malfeasance being perpetrated against our land, I guess it is better late than never.
Posted by pessimist at January 17, 2006 01:24 AMNot stupid has put his finger on the most salient point. Until the "Fourth Estate" acts in a responsible manner, there will never be enough pressure from "we, the ignorant people" to actually accomplish any real change in the status quid pro quo. We MUST put pressure on the Corporate OWNED Media to finally, report on something like the real context of our attempted hostile takeover.
The neocreeps are behaving precisely like T. Boone Pickens. They use our own resources to pay for their venal hijacking of our country. Sun Myung Moon owns the Washington Post, Harpers and the AP. Major War Department contractors own most of the obscenely concentrated media resources of this, OUR nation. Thanks, Bill!
How many of us have had frustrating conversations with friends and relatives who have no Cheneying clue how bad things have gotten in just five years, although the actual plot has been unfolding since Ronnie Reagan fooled enough people to begin his highly impeachable reign. Until the stenographers in this country are either destroyed of converted, we have little chance to restore the constitutional form of government that millions of us have fought and died for.
In the meantime, DLC whores like Hilary and Joementum must be marginalized by people who have a clue. Reed, From, et al BENEFIT from the status quo. I call them wormtongues for plutocratic Sauromans. It's long past time to stop hiring these incompetent "advisors" and send them packing! The medium is not the message, it's the enemy!
Posted by DeminNewJ at January 17, 2006 04:29 AMWhere are these ongoing tips to the Times coming from?
I'll hazzard a guess: TRUE PATRIOTS
did Hitch finally sober up?

If he has, he'd better get to making those amends!
Posted by pessimist at January 17, 2006 12:45 PMBut here's the questions I have about your otherwise excellent post:
1. The Risen book states that one or more documents prove Bush started spying before he says he did, indeed as soon as Bush entered office. That trashes Bush's argument that warrantless spying is legal (because he started before 9/11) and it proves he lied (no surprise there). Yet neither Gore nor the media outlets have pointed this "fact" out or tried to knock it down. What gives?
2. On the keeping us safe meme, I hope the Democrats will point out all the unsafe chemical plants after how many years of having a Homeland Security office? And the unsafe ports? I don't hear much about this stuff but it strikes me that people "get" what happens if/when a chemical plant is sabotaged (sp?): people die on a massive scale. Yet no word from Dems. Will that change?
As for the media parroting the Republican line, the easy way around that filter are hard-hitting ads timed to leverage specific events that get alot of attention. I hope MoveOn and other groups (even libertarian groups, this should be bi-partisan in many ways) will show up with ads early and often.
