So, any chance of flipping 7 votes by tomorrow?

Scheiss.

Posted by idiosynchronic at January 30, 2006 02:55 PM

I really see this as the death of the democratic party. Lets not waste our time with them. Concentrate on attacking bush and his cult and fight to the death. The dems will not do a thing-lets face it. We waste time and energy trying to prod the dems to have some courage. Its a waste of time. They want to lose - they are afraid of winning and like the gop, they really care nothing for this country. Stop this silly support of them. Just concentrate on attacking the GOP - just pretend the dems are dead because they are. Time to move on - we are alone in this fight.

Posted by jj at January 30, 2006 02:57 PM

Well, we knew it was a long shot, didn't we? But I feel better having tried something. Time to start working on alternate candidates for Washington state. Buh-bye Cantwell. 3 strikes and you're outta here.

Posted by iamcoyote at January 30, 2006 03:00 PM

Where did Dick Durbin come up with "37 anti-cloture votes" anyway? What a bloody shower...25 Senators, oy vey!

Posted by barrisj at January 30, 2006 03:11 PM

test

Posted by at January 30, 2006 03:30 PM

Politicians routinely lie to the troops to keep them motivated and fighting until the last moment. Durbin was likely lied to himself.

I will say what I have said previously: I am here, and I am not going anywhere. I will always be a liberal, and liberalism in the United States will never die. It is the basis of our country.

Posted by paradox at January 30, 2006 03:57 PM

It is dead now-has been for quite some time.

Posted by JJ at January 30, 2006 04:07 PM

Every Dem that caved needs to hear it.

We lost, but at least there was some drama. I watched the 5:30 talking heads, and it plays OK.

And when the Bushies show their hand in the SCOTUS, it will be remembered we tried. Bad planning all the way from git. I agreed with John from Ameriblog, but some fight is better than none.

That said, Dem leadership needs to go after every battle now just to improve their learning curve if nothing else.

Posted by SnarkyShark at January 30, 2006 04:08 PM

Wow!! Dem leadership-Now isn't that a play on words-First thing we need to do is GET RID DEM LEADERSHIP!!

Posted by JJ at January 30, 2006 04:12 PM

iamcoyote, I am right with ya! I knew before going into it the odds were slim to none at best. But one thing I learned is who was willing to fight a losing battle based on principle alone and who had already declared defeat without ever having tried. I am not referring only to the Senators on this...there were some notable more prominent bloggers whose silence spoke volumes to me. Perhaps they knew it was a forgone conclusion, but it was too important of an issue to sit back in silence. Some were readying their "I told you so" blog posts (kos put his out immediately and Americablog and Matt Stoller wrote theirs last nite). Anyway, I am not giving up and I will do as I always do and reward good behavior...those 25 Senators that stood up did the right thing...money and thank-yous headed
their way.

Posted by emal at January 30, 2006 04:22 PM

Sure you will !

Posted by JJ at January 30, 2006 04:40 PM

Cloture was a mercy, you morons. Be grateful for something sometime.

Posted by Toby Petzold at January 30, 2006 04:50 PM

JJ, if that comment was sarcastically directed to me in the immediate post above my first one.

Well my response is, You damn right I will! Except there is no sarcasm in my reply, only the power of conviction in my actions.
............
Be grateful for something sometime.

TP, I am grateful for many things all the time, and a very, very important one is that I am nothing like you at all.

Posted by emal at January 30, 2006 04:58 PM

The cloture vote reveals the power of the lefty blogosphere, which is nil.

Posted by Deuce at January 30, 2006 05:01 PM

I am grateful that Toby has no penis.

Posted by nopenis at January 30, 2006 05:07 PM

emal, you're right. I'll admit, that was the first time I'd ever called my senators. Who knew it was that easy, and that it felt so good! I will never feel bad about getting involved this weekend, and will feel less hesitant the next time. And fuck the "I told you so" since they predicted the dems would lose something by fighting. Whatever the vote ended up being, a massive amount of grassroots lefties started feeling their oats. It oughta scare the shit out of a few congresspeople, don't you think?

**Be all you can be! Scroll the trolls!**

Posted by iamcoyote at January 30, 2006 05:10 PM

The US senate just handed in their resignations. Kings don't need a Congress.

Posted by Daryl at January 30, 2006 05:14 PM

I left my beautiful constitution-burning poster at Carl Levin's Lansing office. It had Ben Franklin's "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security." I hope he doesn't toss it. I think the aids thought it was cool. The one suggested I leave it.

Posted by Sharon at January 30, 2006 05:24 PM

Posted by ssfs at January 30, 2006 05:25 PM

iamcoyote, not sure who it will scare but considering that ever since 2004 election results were certified with just Boxer speaking out, then some more with the Roberts nomination, and now even more of them with this vote, it does appear they have come a long way in many regards. More and more appear to be speaking out more bluntly. Even listening to different faces such as Lautenburg and Menedez today, they were excellent! Let's hope it continues in this upward fashion.

As for the scroll past the troll ....sorry, my bad, I have been pretty good (relatively speaking) in scrolling over the trolls, especially toward carpe Koolaid, and cyber stooge, but TP's post gave me such an easy target and left a huge opening, I just couldn't resist. I'll keep working on it...that strategy is fairly successful over at Firedoglake's place.

Posted by emal at January 30, 2006 05:28 PM

I'm glad I get to vote for an INDEPENDANT CANDIDATE for the senate this year. Go Bernie!
I've had it with the Dems, and have had for a while now.
Vote and support progressive 3rd party candidates at all levels of government.
If the Dems can't get thier shit together, let's show them the fucking door.

Posted by PwapVt at January 30, 2006 05:56 PM

emal, I'm using FDL as a model, I like not having to navigate around speedbumps like crappy. I'm just damn sick of not being able to have a conversation here without the clutter. Maybe Steve should set up open threads just for troll baiting and ban the wingnuts from other threads. Then everyone could choose whether to engage or not. Ta da! Everyone is served and no one denied their need to fight.

Posted by iamcoyote at January 30, 2006 06:04 PM

Guys,
Get a good laugh. The guy who thinks Sadaam Hussein hid his weapons in Syria is calling us morons. LOL! I love the talk from GOP tools! Too funny.

Posted by Ga6thDem at January 30, 2006 06:23 PM

GOP senator to be outed tommorrow for his vote w/r/t alito.

Posted by Ga6thDem at January 30, 2006 06:23 PM

Ga - is there to be a public flogging?

Posted by iamcoyote at January 30, 2006 06:27 PM

coyote,
Blog active is releasing this information. I'm sure the AFA will probably flog the guy. If he's from a red state, I'd imagine there might be a price on his head. We'll just have to wait and see.

Posted by Ga6thDem at January 30, 2006 06:39 PM

Ga, way cool.

I like to watch. Heh.

Posted by iamcoyote at January 30, 2006 06:53 PM

Well, told you so long ago. "Slam dunk" were my exact words. Most Dems support Alito not because they agree with him philosophically, but because he's a strongly qualified candidate.

Nuff said.

Where's your next "battle?"

Posted by muckdog at January 30, 2006 07:14 PM

Sounds like an NBA score against a poor offensive team !

Posted by Cleo at January 30, 2006 07:16 PM

Posted by emal at January 30, 2006 07:20 PM

Muckdog,
Is 51 votes a slam dunk to get on the supreme court? Why do you want this guy anyhow? He believes in tapping your phone based on your eating habits. What a creep. He'll be good to use against senators who voted for him though. Isakson and Chambliss now support strip searching little girls? Wonder how that will play down here in GA?

Posted by Ga6thDem at January 30, 2006 07:21 PM

Most Dems support Alito not because they agree with him philosophically, but because he's a strongly qualified candidate.

Oh, puhleeze. Most Dems? Do you mean the ones in Congress? That's just politics. If you mean the general populace, who besides the far left and far right have any idea what Alito even stands for? Please point us to the source of your contention that "most" Dems support Alito. That spin's not holding water in these parts.

Posted by ann at January 30, 2006 07:25 PM

Picked this up from a poster at firedoglake, I couldn't say it any better!!

One of the reasons the right wingers are so powerful is they have a venue to organize their minions; churches. In most of America the church and the bar are the only places people get together and talk about their views or get talked to. The bar doesnt count cuz most people are more concerned with sports, sex, and partying.
The Republicans have used religious organizations to get people to phone senators, push petitions, fax, e-mail, picket etc for their Christo-fascist agenda.
It strikes me, post-lefty-blogs-fight the-weekend-to-convice-spineless-Dems to-filibuster-Alito, that this is OUR church. This is where we come to be preached to, to organize, to envigorate with optimism those who are not satisfied with the direction of the evil that lurks in D.C. These leftist blogs are what we have to make us feel part of a bigger community that could make a change in the world.
Even in defeat it feels good to know that there are thousands of other frustrated, sane, patriotic, moral, Americans that will band together to fight the terrorism that grips our country in the guise of Christianity and Republicanism.

Posted by at January 30, 2006 07:36 PM

WOW We are worse off than I thought! And use blogs to preach to who? People that already think the way we do? Come on Get real

Posted by Theo at January 30, 2006 07:48 PM

I guess you missed this part of the post, "The Republicans have used religious organizations to get people to phone senators, push petitions, fax, e-mail, picket etc for their Christo-fascist agenda.
It strikes me, post-lefty-blogs-fight the-weekend-to-convice-spineless-Dems to-filibuster-Alito, that this is OUR church."
Do you understand now, use the blogs like we did this weekend to get our message across to congressman/women.

Posted by bbtb at January 30, 2006 08:14 PM

Holy Crap...

You left wingnuts just do not get it. It's not the way you deliver your message that is the problem....it's the freakin' message itself.

Bat-shit craziness just don't sell.

Posted by dipshit the fuck at January 30, 2006 09:30 PM

Go read Digby jj, think about it, then come back and tell us what you think about it.

But read the post, the whole post. Note this part:

When it became clear that the vote was going against the filibuster, Diane Feinstein, a puddle of lukewarm water if there ever was one, decided to backtrack and play to the base instead of the right wing. That's new folks. Given an opportunity to make an easy vote, until now she and others like her (who are legion) would always default to the right to prove their "centrist" bonafides. That's the DLC model. When you have a free vote always use it to show that you aren't liberal.

If the Democrats hadn't filibustered they would have earned all the scorn and derision they would have gotten. But 25 said enough, 25 heard the grassroots burning.

Look how often the fundies swamp their critters and get them to act, get nbc to cancel some show or whatever the last thing was. How often has the leftroots gotten their critters to respond to us?

Well, they finally did, so don't throw them out now when they're finally acting the way we want them too, work on getting that number 25 up to 30. Because then you'll get some of the weak sisters that blow more readily in the wind too.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and it didn't come tuimbling down in a day either.

Posted by Duckman GR at January 30, 2006 10:49 PM

Does it worry you duckman that the only way you (and other LLL) see a way to power is through he demise of the U.S.? ON the flip side the Neocons pin their hopes on making the U.S. bigger, better, and stronger? Gee I wonder why your message isn't clicking with the average Joe, Jane, and John?

Posted by at January 31, 2006 05:28 AM

Hmm, if the nc message is so good, why doesn't the general population like it? Perhaps, they really aren't into empire building after all? Of course, to the idiots on the right, 39% is a great approval rating! LOL!

Posted by Ga6thDem at January 31, 2006 06:44 AM

Nothing like the power of your convictions, eh, anon?

Note how the trolls try to change your message by making it something it isn't. Nowhere on this site is any liberal, progressive, American, advocating the fall of the United States. The problem is, of course, that this is what the bushies are doing, and we are trying to stop them from doing it.

Demise of the GOP, now that's another thing altogether, and welcomed by all with a clue.
