Perhaps we need to think of the memo leak as another round in the bureaucracy wars. Rumsfeld is reported to have been furious about the leak. It seems that someone may be trying to grease the skids for his embarrassment and eventual departure. They're turning against each other. No more honor among thieves.
Posted by theologicus at October 23, 2003 07:12 AMRummy furious at the leak??? He handed the memo to at least 3 Congressmen. it was clever politics, nothing more. But the question is who the target was.
Posted by T2 at October 23, 2003 08:04 AMThis is Rumsfeld all the way. Just review two press conferences- the one when he was informed by the press that Condi was now in charge and the one last night responding to the memo. The former was nearly a complete meltdown ala Bobby Knight. The latter was Rumsfeld at his most smug- back in total control of the world.
He stepped on the president to get back his job as ruler of the world. He wants a shadow intelligence agency under his command and a shadow state department.
There is nothing in this memo that criticizes the most important issue- that the State department and the CIA had plenty of correct information on Iraq but the pentagon and the white house ignored the probable intelligence and excepted the very improbable as fact if it fit in with their plan to take over Iraq.
Posted by Rob C at October 23, 2003 08:36 AMSo now the Admin. is at war with itself trying to blame each other for what we in the anti-war crowd were saying all along. I guess now the press will have more respect for the left in terms of foreign policy, right?
Nah . . .
Posted by BriVT at October 23, 2003 08:47 AMThanks to T2.
If Rumsfeld leaked the memo himself, it still seems to be a salvo in the ongoing bureaucracy wars. Will it help him to regain control?
Posted by theologicus at October 23, 2003 08:59 AMI've seen so much naive speculation along the lines of "Oh wow, you see--Rummy says we have a problem!" It's good to know that not everyone is taking the bait.
