War's just being sold with the same sex appeal assigned to body spray. Over and over again, we're advertised to that national service has to come in the form of military service. The problem is that the men on TV are far more feminist than the leaders and officers in the military are.
I really am proud of how far women's roles have come in movies and television. To get an appreciation, all you have to do is watch an old Star Trek episode where the womenfolk cower and scream as Jim Kirk defeats the alien beast. Ellen Ripley could could kick Kirk's ass any day of the week.
Posted by idiosynchronic at February 2, 2006 06:49 AMAll Americans should refuse to enlist. Should the draft be reinstated they should refuse to report if called. The judicial system cannot handle several hundred thousand prosecutions. If fined refuse to pay. There aren't enough jail cells to imprison every able bodied citizen between the age of 18 and 45 for refusing military service. Volunteering for the U.S. military is an act of supreme stupidity and ignorance. Hundreds of stories from multiple sources tell of mistreatment while serving and later when seeking VA treatment. Military personnel suffer lack of body armor, rapes, poorly designed and built weapon systems, extended duty orders, docking pay for trivial charges, toxic/radioactive materials exposure. On top of all those indignities there's the more important issue of being sent off to die in some hellhole for a pack of lies. DON'T FUCKING GO!! TELL THEM TO FUCK OFF!!
Posted by steve duncan at February 2, 2006 07:32 AMIn all the years I spent in the military flight community, not once did I see a flight suit like that chick's wearing. Also, do any of these shows depict women getting raped on their way to the latrine? Or dying of dehydration because they don't want to have to go to the latrine at night? I saw female pilots being hounded out of the flight corps, lied about on their fitreps, orders ignored or ridiculed, etc. Yeah, it's a glamourous job, all right. scout, the military offers free health care; abortions are likely a part of it; but now, boob jobs are the big selling point.
Wasn't there a Meg Ryan flick where she's been gang raped then killed in combat and there's a hearing where she was trashed by the rapists? Courage Under Fire, I think it was...
Posted by iamcoyote at February 2, 2006 07:48 AMWell, let me just say that I am shocked, simply shocked to learn that bimbos who have never served a day in the military are glamorizing war.
Reminds me of John Wayne, the greatest bimbo of all.
Posted by serial catowner at February 2, 2006 07:53 AMsteve d effectively argues that one is a fool to get involved with our empire's current force projection organizations. Just say no.
Babes in Arms is a facet of the new American militarism---war has morphed from a pointless, brutal, dehumanizing operation (think "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "Red badge of Courage") to one so clean and nice that it's now wholesome enough for our most gorgeous female models to participate.
An aggressive, bellicose, war-loving nation has to present its principal occupation as inherently positive to the citizenry, hence Babes in Arms.
But don't neglect the prurient images of beautiful female "soldiers" following male "orders" on the battlefield and the supply room. Now that's something to warm the cockles (shall we say) of the red blooded American "conservative" male! And of course these plucky soldiers could (God forbid) be captured by the licentious enemy as well.......
Posted by euzoius at February 2, 2006 08:01 AMIf a guy like Murtha wouldn't enlist in today's military, that's enough for me. If you sign up right now, you're putting your life on the line for soulless neocon fucks who could give a piece of dogshit about your life or love for your country. A more patriotic thing would be to set up an army against THEM.
I'm so fucking glad I resisted the urge to go to West Point.
Posted by God Of War at February 2, 2006 08:18 AMI willingly admit that I'm such contrary son of a bitch that any enlistment I would have done would have mostly been done inside a stockade.
Posted by idiosynchronic at February 2, 2006 09:15 AMGoW, why do you think they cut money to students yesterday, and loosened the rules on felons enlisting? They want young people to have no choice, and have more enthusiastic torturers to send over there.

I think the GOP would like the soldiers to all just die while they're over there, too, given the crappy funding for veteran's benefits. It's as if they've decided that there's a certain class of Americans to be considered expendable.
Posted by ann at February 2, 2006 10:32 AMLet's not forget that these enlisted females go into the military for the same reason that males do; they are poor, want some on the job training or want money for college.
I found that on average, the females were harder workers, braver and didn't bitch nearly as much as the males did. When put to the test they were equally as tough as the men.
Female officers on average were tougher because of the discrimination. Continually having to prove themselves, over and over.
There is no glamour in being funky after weeks on end in the field. No Mata Hari's or Emma Peel's...at least not in the trenches.
Because of the ratio of males to females, you'll have a woman come into the military off the street where she normally would not be looked at twice. All of a sudden she is showered with attention. Some don't adjust to it well, others feel flattered and some take advantage and use it...but like anywhere else, shit happens. The young males are like slobbering dogs who have never seen the opposite sex, waiting for permission to hump. Or from the article, not waiting for permission.
Crime does not cease when you go into the military folks. It's just a smaller microcosm of society in general. Except the penalties are more severe.
I'm glad I went in at almost 30!
Someone should make a calendar of 12 brave ones who made it home (picture and bio), sell it to the lefty blogosphere, to make money for veterans, keep a copy and mail the rest to all our "Support the Troop" neighbors, co-workers and politicians. And if it made tons of money, that'd show that indeedy do, lefties really do support the troops in ways that count, not just show a namby pamby yellow magnet on our SuckVs.
Posted by Sharon at February 2, 2006 02:06 PMI agree "puppy of conflict" with your decision-The standards at West Point are very high-it is good that you resisted
Posted by Hank at February 2, 2006 04:15 PMOh Man, I don't know where to start. I am a 16 year vet of the US Army, and am currently at Camp Liberty, Iraq. To start, Steve Duncun is an idiot. If I have to explain, then you are too.
Second, there have never been any rapes of female soldiers going to latrines after dark. I checked from first hand sourses. The supposed "rapes" over here occure when female soldiers allow themselves to get into "questionable" situations with thier male counterparts (like alone in thier rooms).
This article is just another activist propaganda story intended to get people fired up. I agree with the whole AOL BS, but the rest of the article is just plain wrong. Now, I'm not saying that I'm totally for this little war, but lets stop using fear, lies, and half-truths to further our agendas.
I can tell you what is REALLY going on over here. I have recently stumbled on to this site, but will stick around for a while.
