Any Country that does not protect the least of us, those who cannot defend or take care of themselves, has lost it's soul. Bush, a self proclaimed Christian, has acted in a manner that would suggest just the opposite. No Christian would participate in the health and welfare of children being eroded. Now tell me again how we liberals are baby killers.

Endless "Cyclone of Poverty"

The "disgrace" and poverty of great sectors of the population in the US revealed in the aftermath of Katrina was widely discussed. Nicholas D. Kristof, New York Times, compares the fate of American children from poor families and the fate of children from poorer countries and comes to amazing conclusions.

"Indeed, according to the United Nations Development program, an African-American baby in Washington has less change of surviving its first year than a baby born in urban parts of the state of Kerala in India."

"A few days ago, the US Census Bureau published statistics showing that a million more Americans lived in poverty in 2004 compared to 2003. The number declined under Clinton's presidency but is 17% higher under the presidency of George W. Bush.

Child mortality, also rose for the first time since 1958 under Bush. Twenty nine percent of American children last year were inadequately insured and most did not receive medical care or necessary inoculations.

Why would a Democrat say this?

Somehow the Democratic Party — for 180 years the most electorally successful political party on the planet — has now almost completely mutated into a party too loathsome to be seen in public, and too nihilistic to be trusted with control of even a single branch of government.

Sometimes I feel that we are isolated in our thinking. Then I run across an article translated from German into English, written by a German pastor, and realize that the world doesn't see Bush as the other 34 percent in America does.

Judith, I believe Bush is not an xtian, he just plays one on tv, and the rubes will buy anything they see on tv. As for poverty, that's a bonus side effect of tax cuts for the wealthy, needed to provide cannon fodder for endless war.

Posted by iamcoyote at February 3, 2006 05:37 AM

Iamcoyote, I agree that Bush has traded the money to help lift people out of proverty for the Military Complex and the rich. I cannot tell you how much I hate him, because I basically believe that evil lurks in his little bitty heart.

Posted by Judith at February 3, 2006 05:41 AM

You know, Judith, I think Cheney's the evil one. Bush is just a foul-tempered little boy given the keys to the Mercedes and is content to mean-spiritedly run it to the ground. Both are mainly concerned with how much money they can steal from us and how much damage they can get away with.

I'm pretty sure that both OH and TX are pushing 100% corrupt in their GOP operations. The tie-breaker, I'd think, should go to TX, because they've got the sheer numbers on their side.

The unemployment rate has fallen to 4.7%, the lowest level since July 2001, as employers added 193,000 payroll jobs in January and totals for prior months were raised as well.

Oh, my God, Now Fitzgerald, Fed. Pros. in the Valerie Plame case refuses to acknowledge if he has any proof that Valerie was a covert agent. He says it really doesn't matter since lying to a grand jury is the charge.....

But wait, I thought somebody OUTED a COVERT AGENT?

I am beginning to wonder, that if the DEMS can't win in 2006, you might consider a serious trip to Guyana and bring along some instant Kool-Aid packages.

Cuz if you can't win in 2006, then you don't deserve to even be recognized as a party. Should just change your name to the "Whinners" Party, because thats all you guys do any more....

Posted by Theo at February 3, 2006 07:27 AM

OOOOH, JJ and The Carp have a new theory of rationalizing the moral corruption of their party. It goes like this......

Once upon a time there was a great country. This country was full of hard working people, it had the best military and political system in the world.

Unfortunately, people are not perfect and there are always bad people doing bad things in the midst of the good people doing the good things.

Now, the economy was struggling and the economy fairies were madly working to maintain some balance but they were meeting with only limited success.

One day it came to been known throughout the land that certain members of the King's court were corrupt, sold out their responsibilities to the people and to the King for money and gifts, and some had violated other laws of the land. (GASP!)

This did not bode well for the country so the economy fairies waved their magic wands and created NEW JOBS......

and lo! the corruption of those certain men in the King's court was lifting as if it had never happened. Money was returned, cats and dogs ceased to fight, arrogance and greed were removed from their hearts, Profesional wrestling disappeared from the airwaves, they all stood before the people of the country and confessed their corruption, flogged themselves in repentence and resigned from their offices.

Hurrah! Hurrah! (Much clapping of hands)

The End

Posted by j swift at February 3, 2006 07:32 AM

Talking about the economy. Seems the unemployment rate is so low because the jobs picture has been so bad for so long. Some 193,000 jobs created and "only" 100,000 layoffs reported, but still there are a huge number of people who have been unemployeed for so long that they not longer show up in the unemployment figures. I especially like the fact that when WalMart opened near Chicago, 25,000 people applied for 375 jobs. Obviously there are still some people who need jobs.

What can one say but, great economy, George.

Maybe Congress and bu$h would like to create a windfall for the American people; decent wages, affordable benefits and job security!

I guess that is to much to ask!!

In our brain dead, sports saturated, Survivors/American Idol shitbrain culture, it was only a matter of time before our political sphere was turned into a "winning team/losing team" mentality.

The excitement of being on a winning team, and crushing your "opponent", is an emotion that is very dear to the heart of uneducated white males, the principal component of the nitwit "conservative" team.

Plus, the tribal team mentality also stimulates a faith based response, so the facts of the resulting abject public policy failure are maningless to the "winners". The "coach" just gives the team some new "facts". Crape is a perfect example of this sort of idiocy.

Posted by euzoius at February 3, 2006 08:07 AM

The excitement of being on a winning team...

I've been saying this for years now. It seems that lots of young men vote Republican because they don't want to align themselves with the "losers." We don't educate people about the government or public service or participatory democracy, but we make sure they sign up for Little League - this outcome was inevitable.

Posted by ann at February 3, 2006 08:14 AM

Mary: Which state is most abused by their Republican party reps?

Apparently, your state of mind.

In the big news of the day, the unemployment rate has dipped to 4.7%. And further proof that the nation is at full employment was revealed in the higher than expected wage gains. As companies now have to compete for workers, they have to offer higher wages to entice folks to stick around and not leave for greener pastures at other firms.

This has spurred fears on Wall St that the Fed will continue to hike interest rates in an attempt to fight the fears of inflation.

And as a Chicagoan, I say, "Thank God!" City taxpayers can't afford another corporate tax break to a wealthy company like Wal-Mart, let alone the inevitable job loss that will result from a Wal-Mart coming to town. We have Target and CostCo, we don't need Wal-Mart on top off those. There's only so much cheap toilet paper and Rubbermaid that one city needs.

You know, there used to be hardware stores in Chicago. When I needed paint or nails or sandpaper, I could go a block from my house and buy these from a locally owned business. But the hardware stores are all gone now. The small business model that we hear so much about, the small business that all these tax cuts are supposed to help, the small businesses that families would be able to keep if we'd just get rid of the estate tax (even though these businesses are so small, they'd never be subject to the estate tax.) Instead, I have to travel over five miles to a Home Depot to buy a box of nails, where the former hardware store owners now work for a meager wage instead of the equity of their own business. But hey, I might save a dime on those nails, except I pay $4.00 for the bus fare.

Mostly rich kids work at those places. There was a study done recently that shows that a large number of workers at minimum wage companies are actually kids of the rich and middle class. This is why hikes in the minimum wage have had no effect on battling poverty. Only about 2% of the workforce makes minimum wage, and most of them only work part-time.

But, I suppose hiking the minimum wage would give those kids more gas money for street racin' their hot rods. Agreed?

Ann, I said "mostly." I'm sure there are exceptions here and there. I go to Subway most everyday for lunch (and sometimes dinner) here in Sacramento. I visit eight of them depending on what direction I'm heading. There are three of them within a few miles of my home, and another five of them within a few miles of the Fun Factory where I work. They know my name when I come in ("Muckdog!"), and usually have the sandwich ready by the time I'm near the counter. (I get the veggie, of course.) There are a few folks over 22. And those are usually managers, who do make above the minimum wage. Most folks who make the sandwiches are teens.

bbtb, I don't own any individual stocks at this time. I have owned Symantec from time to time in the past, but now that MSFT is in the biz, they'll probably dominate within a few years.

Thanks for the recommendation, Pmist. I'll take a look at their product. Most of the reviews I've read seem to indicate that all of them have their pros and cons. Pick yer poison.

With regards to the jobs numbers, it was in that sweet spot that shows employers are picking up enough folks. But the reason Wall St is freaked is because of the wage pressures. They were thinking the Fed may be done with rate hikes, but now they're worried rates could be headed higher.

Posted by muckdog at February 3, 2006 10:15 AM
In the big news of the day, the unemployment rate has dipped to 4.7%. Posted by muckhog
The rate is the lowest since 2001. One fine day, we'll see numbers like Clinton's again. The only problem is the workforce participation rate, which has dipped from those halcyon days of a Democratic economy, artificially deflates the unemployment numbers. Of course, the concomitant increase in the poverty rate each and every year of the Bush administration shows the soft underbelly of this tremendous boom: It's a boom that isn't.

The Los Angeles country city of Inglewood also voted out a Wal-Mart. The damage these stores do to the community is well documented. They merely replace current retail jobs at lower pay and benefits. Cheap labour is the Republican's greatest thrill. Every time the American worker gets a break, the Fed raises interest rates to dampen wage growth and employers mumble ominously about off shoring and outsourcing.

Mostly rich kids work at those places. Posted by muckdog

Yep, the only people I see working at these places are newly immigrated millionaires just looking for something to do in order to fritter away their empty leisure hours

Posted by Mike at February 3, 2006 10:24 AM

now they're worried rates could be headed higher.

Considering the national debt, and the likelihood that some of our foreign lenders could decide they want their money back, I'd be very amazed if the Fed wasn't getting cautious lately. But rather than blame the cause of the caution on the worker, I'd much rather see them be honest about it now being time to rein in our excessive spending.

Everything has to go under the microscope if we are ever going to get out from under the debt that now totals well over $30,000 per person in the United States.

That 'everything' includes George's Oil Rustle and all the no-bid Halliburton contracts.

Posted by pessimist at February 3, 2006 10:26 AM

This thread is sort of strange. But my unique observations are....

My children worked and are working minimum wage jobs. They don't have to work. I make them. Its good for them to learn to earn. Bagging groceries or working as a receptionist, doesn't require $10.00 talent.

I personally pay starting wages of only $11.00 per hour for receptionist work, even though it is far above the going rate. I like little turnover so I do pay higher than average. Plus Georgia has one of the lowest cost of living standards anywhere in the US.

Wal-mart is hated by you liberals for only one reason. They are living the American dream of capitalism. I have several lawsuits against them, and they are tough. But they do more for their employees and for customer service than I ever imagined. Quality, quanity, convienence, and service. If they were as bad as you say, they wouldn't be growing as fast. I just wish they had more competetion. I'm proud of them myself.

The way for Liberals to win...

THEIR KONTRACT WITH AMERIKA.

1. Minimum wage $15.00. No one makes more than $100.00. Thats fair. From Garbage collectors to Doctors. (never more than 8 times of pay disparity between the workers of Amerika.)
2. Free healthcare to all making less than 100k.
3. No taxes for anyone making less than $75 per year. (family of four, right almost half of American's pay little if any tax)
4. No Payroll takes for anyone below $100k.
5. Lower the requirements for welfare to where four times a many people can get government assistance.
6. Tax the top 1% until they only net $200k per year, unless they are professional athletes, or entertainers.
7. Stop all spying of anyone for any reason.
8. Openly support Iran's right to nuclear power, and stop our full support of the Zionists.
9. Unionize all workers so that the employee own the company.
10. Shut all private schools down, make everyone get the same sub standard education.
11. Open marriage to gays, poligomists (sic), incestuous couples, etc. Love is love.
12. From each according to their means to each according to their needs.

In yesterday’s House Republican election for new Majority Leader included a vote where more votes were cast than members present.

Though obviously related only in a symbolic sense , every time I see the words vote or voting irregularity - my blood pressure rises .
The Democratic party has been absolutely inept at addressing /attacking the GOP’s failsafe life-preserver tactic of stealing votes . You can have the best candidate , a winning position on issues and a vault busting campaign fund and it won’t be worth the week’s contents of a Port-a-Potty if you allow the other side to cheat .
The 2000 and 2004 elections had more than enough weird outcomes to justify a full time frontal assault on voting irregularities ; thus far the Democratic effort is a analogous to you calling the police and waiting for their arrival as a pedophile takes your son to the bathroom .

Typical liberalism, I don't why you thought your comments weren't. Liberals don't think, they react they feel with their heart. So in your world of "situational ethics", you have a great deal of hatred for this pedophile and want to act. So its okay for you, but if anyone else wants to be tough on crime or require severe punishment for criminals, including preventing them from voting, or moving into a neighborhood near a school, or working as a school teacher, etc., then you slam them for being conservative haters.

So don't apologize. Making up rules that fit your current feelings is typical liberalism.

BTW: the evil republicans in Georgia, (2nd year in power ever). Just passed a bill putting molesters away for 25 years, period. Toughest punishment in the USA per the news reports.

Posted by carpediem at February 3, 2006 02:24 PM

I have a friend who works in Ohio state government. I'm sure she would say it is the Republicans in Ohio government that are the worst. Our Republican governor is corrupt to the core and the department of transportation, like Florida's, is a pit into which millions somehow disappear. Our Republican secretary of state (Ken Blackwell - shades of Katherine Harris?) is responsible for the election fraud, and Bush "pioneer" fund raiser, Tom Noe, has been indicted for a whole pile of offenses.

Sometimes my friend's utter frustration and disappointment at the way things have become in our state is almost too much for her. But then he picks herself up and dusts herself off, and goes back to trying to make it better. I admire her so much for her sense of hope and her ability to recognize that if we can make things better for Ohioans, things will improve for our entire nation.

"The Constitution is just a goddammed piece of paper."

A fine example of assholishness if I ever heard one.

TLV, I feel for your friend, but she sounds like she's not ready to give up, and neither should we. What else is there to do? I wonder, though, if your friend has found any valuable dirt that might accidently make it to the newspapers or blogs, hmmm?

"Mostly rich kids work at those places. Posted by muckdog".

That is the biggest laugh I had this morning. You have got to be kidding. Where do you get this stuff Muck? Rich kids would not be caught dead working at Taco Bell or any other such place. They might work at The Gap (like my rich friend's kid), but Taco Bell, not.

..,the evil republicans in Georgia, (2nd year in power ever)….Posted by carpediem
No doubt you are speaking under your real name, Mo Lester. So how is Ralph Reed doing? I understand he is a typical Christian Republican: always walking around with his hands folded in prayer and his purse open for lobbying money. How is Newt, that chap you worked for, the one with the affinity for Blowjobs? Have you explained to your children how his seduction of a staff member was sexual harassment and molestation?
