Comments: Whittington Suffers Heart Attack From Cheney Shooting

I am so SICK of partisan leftists like this Whittington guy trying to damage the administration!

Posted by dj moonbat at February 14, 2006 11:35 AM

You can bet that Whittington is receiving the best and most intensive healthcare ever administered to a patient in the history of this nation.

Posted by islander at February 14, 2006 11:37 AM

As it turns out this is the first sitting Vice-President to ever shoot somebody. Burr was already out of office when his duel with Hamilton took place.

What will happen if Whittingon ends up dead? Negligent homicide at the least, right?
If this was a normal Joe...shit, we would still be sitting in the slammer.

Who is going to pay for his treatment?

Posted by bbtb at February 14, 2006 11:42 AM

Now, now, Dr. David Blanchard, chief of emergency care, said it was "a silent heart attack, an asymptomatic heart attack. He's not had a heart attack in the traditional sense."

Guess it was one of them new-fangled, non-traditional, non-heart attacks -- wonder if Cheney will have one of his own now?

Posted by itsmecissy at February 14, 2006 11:49 AM

I figure that the chances of a negligent homicide prosecution, against a sitting VP who is also a Texas big shot (even if he claims to live in Wyoming), is approximately nil. Right now, Whittington's family isn't raising a fuss, but if he were to die, I wouldn't be surprised to see a tort lawsuit.

Posted by dj moonbat at February 14, 2006 11:51 AM

This is so much a reflection of the entire last 5 years of hell. I hope Whittington hangs on.. we need him. The more people think about this whole event, the more people process all that the SCAB (Supreme Court Appointee Bush-Cheney) Admin has done to the US. The US is us and WE are in that hospital bed.

Posted by stevetalbert at February 14, 2006 11:56 AM

I guess those pellets really did break the skin.

Sincerely, I hope the guy recovers. Can't be a good thing for a 78 year old man to have foreign metal objects in his heart.

You bet your sweet bippy if he doesn't recover the word tort will be tatooed across Cheney's ass faster than muckdog can say "DOW 11,000!".

Posted by snark at February 14, 2006 11:57 AM

How the Hell does this pellet from a "peppering" get "lodged" in the man's heart? How the Hell close was he to Deadeye Dick? Two Feet?

And if it's so damn minor an injury, what is he doing in the ICU for three straight days? I don't believe anything about this story at this point.

The Texas doctors are lying about the severity of this injury to protect Cheney! This whole thing does not add up and the national press are completely inmpotent! Why aren't they camped out at the VP's DC offices demanding a GD press conference?

Why aren't they giving the doctors in Corpus Christi the third degree, given the nonsense these MDs are peddling for Deadeye?

This is turning from a national joke into (yet another) scandal.

Posted by euzoius at February 14, 2006 11:57 AM

euzoius,

You forget.

They act. And when they act they make their own reality.

Whittington's reality is secondary.

Posted by snark at February 14, 2006 12:01 PM

The general consensus among my coworkers is even if Whittington dies, no charges will be brought against Cheney.

Posted by pessimist at February 14, 2006 12:07 PM

Sincerely, I hope the guy recovers.

I don't give a tinker's damn. The guy is rich, and a staunch Republican. He hunted with Dick Cheney.

Posted by dj moonbat at February 14, 2006 12:07 PM

dj:

Play along here; let's hope he is fine and pulls through any surgery. But he is 78 years old and was pulling down big coin still, so the family has an interest should he not make it through this. And then there is this: did he have a life insurance policy?

If the poor guy passes away as a result of these injuries, aside from the claims the family might make by lawsuit (which would be hush-hush taken care of by the GOP big money people), what about the life insurance company? They may be asked to simply pay a claim and make this go away, but would a shareholder sit still for that?

Posted by Steve Soto at February 14, 2006 12:09 PM

bbtb, I was wondering the same thing. I'm placing my bets on some sudden hospital mishap to have happened if the guy dies, and some poor sucker scapegoat of a doctor to get hung out to dry for malpractice, because it was not Cheney's fault, of course. The doctor will take the fall, and Cheney will never be prosecuted. Then, this can become the focal point of an administration crusade for standardized testing of everyone in the medical profession, and health care "reform".

I'm just waiting for Cheney to speak, decry the liberal media for focusing on this, and tell everyone to remember that "liberals shoot Americans in the back every day"...

Posted by Kaleefornian at February 14, 2006 12:10 PM

Bloodlust is so unbecoming.

Posted by snark at February 14, 2006 12:18 PM

I wouldn't be surprised to see a tort lawsuit.

And considering the Republican adversion to torts, Cheney will have a heart attack himself.

Or at least a hissy. Followed by a heart attack.

I think we're fooling ourselves though. Whittington and his estate will never sue another Republican, even for wrongful death or neglectful injury. They're all part of the club. It might cause undue concerns at the fundraisers. An offer of some respectable amount will be quietly soliticed or offered and we'll never see the amount in the light of day.

Posted by God Of War at February 14, 2006 12:20 PM

Kaleefornian raises and interesting procedural question. If this poor man dies will Cheney insist that the family sue the doctors in order to "prove" that he himself wasnt the cause of the death? Is it their fault because they didn't stop the "pellet" from "migrating" to the heart (wasn't it there originally from, you know, piercing the skin). How does this play with mr "tort law is evil?"

but I admit that I don't expect cheney to ever, ever, pay for this even in a minor sense of inconvenience.

aimai

Posted by aimai at February 14, 2006 12:22 PM

i think cheney just needed to divert attention from the fact that scooter threw big time under the bus last week. even george allen thinks dick should be investigated.

in the times today, wyoming/harvard bag o'wind alan simpson says cheney's a "master hunter." why does he need a campagn contributor to gather the prey for him if he's such a freakin grizzly adams? (the dick and bag o'wind also fish together - apparently big time is a master baiter, as well. sorry about that.)

Posted by benjoya at February 14, 2006 12:23 PM

It's too bad Dickhead knows which end of the gun is which. He might have done us all a great favor. I'll bet he just guesses, and one day, the quails will be covered in Cheney yuck.

A little perspective here:

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Aug. 27) — The same day Hillary Clinton was scheduled to speak at the Democratic National Convention, newly released documents suggest she was behind the 30-hour delay in releasing late White House counsel Vincent Foster’s suicide note to authorities.

How the White House handled Foster’s 1993 death, and the possibility that administration officials improperly removed documents from his office or impeded an official search of it, has been the subject of intense scrutiny by congressional Republicans and the media.

The newly released memo, written by White House lawyer Miriam Nemetz, quotes then-White House chief of staff Mack McLarty as saying Mrs. Clinton “was very upset and believed the matter required further thought and the president should not yet be told” about Foster’s note.

According to the document, Mrs. Clinton “said they should have a coherent position and should have decided what to do before they told the president.”

That contradicts sworn testimony to the Senate Whitewater Committee from Clinton staffers that the first lady had no role whatsoever in the handling of Foster’s note.

The Bush White House continues to try and cover up the facts.

Scott McClellan knew of Whittington's heart attack hours before he conducted the daily briefing with the Washington Press Corps and he failed to mention it.

It's one cover up after another with this junta.

Meanwhile, the rightwing "spin" is this wasn't a "regular heart attack," suggesting there's nothing serious with Whittington's condition.

FACT CHECK: ALL HEART ATTACKS ARE SERIOUS.

FACT CHECK: ALL HEART ATTACKS MEAN A PART OF THE HEART MUSCLE HAS DIED.

I'm just wondering, if Whittington dies, will Dick "Fatty" Cheney claim Executive Privilege?

Damn right he was closer than 30 yds. The shot pattern was mostly his upper left torso including his face, it did show some around the chest. (Can't remember the website I saw that had the whole report.) If the pellets are even resting on or near the heart it will give off a rejection signal. And yes these pellets are small enough to go through some main arteries.
It must off knocked him on his ass. Not just peppered him. As Jon Stewart said, "Peppering is what you do to a salad".

now we know the reason the Cheney White House sought to cover this up. Who knows how bad the guy he shot really is, but until they were sure he wasn't going to die, they were going to cover it all up. Until the ranch lady blew the whistle. Lets just guess....what if the old guy had died straight up.....Do you think they would have just covered it up? I do. Just like on 24. Now lets just speculate what will happen if he dies as a result of Cheney's gunplay. No charges, that's what. Shot to death by the vice president of the US and nothing would happen. Shotgun blast=peppered

The top two chambers of his heart were beating irregularly, setting off an artrial fibrillation episode. The muscle of the heart where the pellet is has become infected or irritated. (Hilllary loses in New Hampshire (by 20 points, as in the recent poll), and also in Maine and New Jersey.

McCain/Jeb in 2008. McCain gets a year in and he ends up dying in office.
No thanks!

Better still, Bushco could name his step-brother, former president Bill Clinton.

Great idea, don't you think?

nah, it's the gop that hates mccain. They don't like mixed race families. Appointing McCain would put an automatic Democrat in his seat. Rove would never allow that.Besides the GOP likes stupid. Look for someone like Cronyn to replace Cheney. Gotta keep that cronyism and corruption alive!

You gotta wonder if Mrs. Wittington also thought it was her husband's fault.

As for tax cuts--
The Senate voted 53-47 today (in a procedural vote to instruct House-Senate conferees on the pending tax legislation) in favor of extending for two more years, to 2010, the 15 percent tax rate on capital gains and dividends which are currently scheduled to expire in 2008. This is a big deal (see the Wall Street Journal front page) since it is now clear that the Senate will follow the House on extending the tax cuts in the final tax bill. Another defeat for the Democrats. I am predicting a compromise on the estate tax before the elections. I look for a five million dollar exemption and a sharp cut in the estate tax rate to 20 percent (from the current 46 percent). The billionaires won't like the outcome, but the Republican rank and file will be very happy.

i know this is a shooter thread, but that was some of the most transparent trolling i've ever seen.

Bad news to many out here...old Harry will live. This was simply an accident. How many of you can admit to yourself that you are sad the poor guy didn't die just so a supposed political scandal could have more legs? If you feel that way get yourselves some help. There are too many true political differences to discuss to even consider making this an issue. Attitudes like many here will only lead to something like...President JEB Bush...President-elect Roomney...President McCain etc. Think before reacting.
