Rumors continue that Cheney was impaired. He becomes too much of a distraction, and steps down for the good of the administration. A true marter, falsely accused by the evil press.
A moderate heir-apparent is installed to unite the country, and has a couple of years to garner votes and look presidential.
Cheney takes the fall for outing Plame and fabricating intelligence, and is later pardoned.
Coldheart,
Liberals made this country great.
Liberals freed the slaves.
Liberals got women the right to vote.
Liberals got us civil rights.
Liberals fought for the worker protections that created the great American middle class.
Liberal ruled the congrss for the middle 60 years of the 20 century, a time when the United States came to lead the world.
...and conservatives fought them every step of the way.
And Carters public policy was good. Back then we were the worlds biggest creditor nation. Then very quickly under Reagan we became the world biggest debtor nation. During Carters time OPEC tried to screw us (but those are BushCo's buddies, not any friends of the Dems) and there was the start of the Islamic revolution in Iran (again thanks the Shah who was installed and supported by GOP pres with daddy Bush running the CIA).
But I think the Dem model as all the Dems thought it should be in 1993 is especially instructive. I think a comparison of Clintons terms with the 12 years before and the years since is all anybody really needs to looks at.
After 12 years of the trickle down economic, voodoo doodoo Reagan/GOP garbage, Clinton got elected on the slogan "It's the economy stupid"
Record deficits, slow growth, general misery. That's what GOP policy brings.
In 1993 the Dems set out a strategy of deficit reduction, targeted tax cuts in sectors and segments that would spur econmonic growth, huge government investment in R&D and technological advancement for the United States, more investment in education (to keep us ahead in the world), environmental protection, foreign policy that had most of the world loving us and wanting to be like us and buying our Levis and Big Macs etc, etc, etc.
It worked brilliantly well. It set us on the greatest economic expansion in the history of our republic. This economic/tax/regulatory/fiscal package was called "THE DEFICIT REDUCTION ACT OF 1993" Every Rebulican in congress voted against it. But alas it produced. Consider it:
--created 23 million news jobs
--eliminated the federal budget deficit and created a surplus in the hundred of billions and projected into the trillions in the next five years.
--actually enabled us to pay down the national debt.
--had real wage growth going through the roof
--had GDP growth going throught the roof.
--had consumer and business confidence at record highs.
--had us with a monsterous technological and biotec competitive advantage over the rest of the world.
-- saw the Dow go from 3500 to 10,500.
--had the United States with favoribility ratings in MUSLIN COUNTRIES IN THE HIGH 70'S AND 80'S, not to mention Europe, Asia, and S America. Clinton was a rock star and the world loved the United States.
Then we let the GOP get back in charge. Bush Jr's first term? ZERO JOB CREATION. ZERO GROWTH IN THE DOW. RECORD BUDGET DEFICITS.. THE WORLD HATING OUR GUTS. MASSIVE TERRORIST ATTACKS. VIETNAM LIKE QUAMIRES IN COUNTRIES THAT WERE NO TREAT TO US.. I could go on all day, but as you can see GOP policy has clearly been condemned to the trash heap of history while Dem public policy works very well for America.
Only our enemies would vote for the results GOP policy brings. So.... what's your problem?

How about the once-in-a-lifetime development of a major technology (the Internet), the rise of economic efficiencies resulting from adoption of computer networks in the business world, the massive corporate spending on Y2K upgrading, the rise of Microsoft, Intel, etc., globalization savings for business. Only a deluded Democrat could believe that raising the income tax rate on high income professionals by 4 or 5 percent could cause the NASDAQ to jump to 4000.

Posted by Ga6thDem at February 15, 2006 05:15 AMI listened to a very distrubing interview with someone from the Reporters without Borders yesterday on NPR. It seems that Yahoo and Google are assisting the Chinese Government in censoring what can and cannot be accessed on the Internet. Even more distrubing is that Yahoo has participated in turning in dissenters to the Chinese Internet police (it is estimated there are 30 thousand such people who police the Internet).
Google, in a compromise with the Chinese Government, has a disclaimer on sites that will not open saying that it is censored.
Now we know that if they would assist the Chinese Government in censorship, how far are we from these same people from censoring our Internet use?
"The three major Western internet providers in China (Google, MSN, and Yahoo!) have all been complicit with the Chinese government in helping censor the web searches of Chinese citizens. That alone is enough to boycott any of them. But Yahoo! has recently distinguished itself out as the most oppressive American Internet Corporation doing business in China."
"The abbreviated version is as follows: An anonymous Chinese citizen sent out information about how the Chinese government intended to censor information about the 15-year anniversary of the massacre at Tiananmen Square. This person used a Yahoo! e-mail address to do it. The Chinese Secret Police asked Yahoo! to turn over the sender’s identity. Yahoo! claims they did not know the reason why the Chinese government was requesting, and complied with the Chinese Secret Police without argument. They identified Shi Tau, a reporter with The Contemporary Business News in Hunan, who is now serving 10 years in jail."

Not everyone was pleased with the way former US Vice President Al Gore was given "celebrity" treatment when he spoke as a crusader against global warming in Manila.
Two scientists from the University of the Philippines yesterday lamented how Gore's "doomsday" pronouncements apparently received more attention than the more detailed analyses and solutions offered by Filipino environmental experts. They also challenged and branded as "exaggerated" what the former US leader said about Manila Bay "overflowing" because of the greenhouse effect.
Too much use of ground water by typical households and establishments-not global warming-was the bigger reason the metropolis is sinking, said Dr. Carlo Arcilla and Dr. Fernando Siringan of the UP College of Science in Diliman, Quezon City.
"There we go again. A foreign celebrity coming over for a quick visit, giving a talk, and we are all in adulation, taking everything said as gospel truth," Arcilla said in a statement e-mailed to the Inquirer.
Arcilla is an associate professor of geosciences and coordinator of the college's Science and Society Program. He has a Ph D in geosciences and geotechnical engineering earned at the University of Illinois. Siringan, a professor on marine geology, holds a Ph D from Rice University in Houston, Texas...
...The former Vice President of the Clinton administration warned that up to two million Metro Manila residents may have to be evacuated from flooded communities as melting glaciers and the polar icecap raise sea levels worldwide.
Warning that the world will reach the "tipping point" toward an ecological catastrophe within the next 10 years, he urged international and local leaders to focus their efforts toward halting the phenomenon of global warming.
His computer-aided presentation earned a standing ovation.
"The problem with these exaggerated and very general pronouncements about environmental doomsday scenarios is that they distract us from the real local problems which we can really do something about," Arcilla said.
He conceded that global warming was "a serious threat to humanity, (but) it is certainly not in the terms that Gore presents." As to Manila Bay overflowing, he noted that his peers at UP, like Siringan and Dr. Kelvin Rodolfo, along with their students, had conducted their own studies of the water level's rise...
"I am not saying that we should stop helping control greenhouse gas emissions, but very, very few really know the real story about flooding in Metro Manila," he said. "We could cry all day about greenhouse gases but if we don't regulate carefully our use of groundwater, we could be flooding faster than whatever could come from global warming."

They are obviously fully aware of the illegality of the President's actions, and do not want the well-deserved blowback that would result from legitimate hearings to affect their chances of reelection. Period. The only way to acheive that without abandoning the President is to 1) prevent an examination of past behavior and 2) enshrine the legality of that behavior going forward.

What the former VP said, while true, is not what we in Manila need to be immediately concerned about since there are more short-term environmental reasons that the Manila basin will flood.
Again, your moniker seems to be spot on.
Posted by snark at February 15, 2006 05:57 AMDipshit, you misunderstand.
In nature waterleverise and landsinkin can coexist, and in this case add to one anothers effect. All that post is saying is that the professional in one field (Geofysics, not atmosheric modellers/scientists) thinks his field is a better explanation on the specific problems in this small area, Metro Manila.
And i can relate to the problems of groundwater depletion causing the groundlevel to sink. Nothing odd about it at all.
And I would rather think that their work on groundwater even further add to the message Gore is trying to get across to decisionmakers.
So in short- that post isnt really saying what you think it is. rather the opposite.
"Gallup has Bush's approval rating at 39%. Could it go lower?"
God willing.
Posted by Judith at February 15, 2006 06:05 AMThe republican regard for "THE LAW" so ever present during the "republican lynching" of Bill Clinton for lying about a blow job, seems to have "gone with the wind." The "what will we tell the children" republicans are now quite willing to give up their constitutionally guaranteed essential freedoms for the promise of a temporary security. Didn't Ben Franklin have something to say about that?
Why weren't these security-conscious republicans caterwalling then that the law should be changed retroactively because the publicity surrounding the Presidents extra-marital affair was harming national security. In retrospect, it may arguably have distracted Clinton and certainly kept him from striking more than once to get bin Laden for fear of being accused of wagging the dog.
I think what we are seeing here is the results of one-party government where campaign contributions essential to reelection are controlled by a few fat cats. The so-called "moderate" republicans have been "persuaded" not to make a fuss. If you remember, Karl Rove promised to blacklist any republicans who dared make a stink about the illegal NSA Spying and apparently the blackmail has worked. It's interesting that the trolls posting here are so sure that they will WIN on the NSA issue. But whether or not they WIN on the issue may not be the most important question. It may be is the NSA Spying legal and constitutional and did the President break the law, making him subject to impeachment if there is a democratic majority in Congress.
I have a feeling though, that this totalitarian road-show is about to close, come November. Although the cowtowing media is staying "bought" for the most part, the American public is wise to the Administration's deceit.
I feel that the winds of change are blowing. No one realized what would happen in 1994 before it happened and I feel it's going to happen again this year.
If not, we'll have to wait, but tyranny will be defeated sooner or later.

"Raw Story has a piece that Russell Tice, one of the original whistleblowers to NYT says there is a 2nd, more invasive, program being used."
Mainsailset, you are correct that there is more to the NSA spying story than they have admitted to. Everyone on this Blog site knows that, and it is this knowledge that drives the passion you read here. It is amazing that some here are blinded by a belief system that disallows that thought.
Posted by Judith at February 15, 2006 07:00 AMWhat I find even more amazing is that every politician doesn't seem to get the fact that they are vulnerable to being spied upon, Republican or Democrat. One would think they would be united on this subject.
Just a reminder, three children on their way to school in Iraq were just killed by a bomb. Oh well, it was just three kids and war is hell. Who gives a rats ass, right?
Posted by Judith at February 15, 2006 07:08 AMJudith: exactly my point. people on this site know there's more because they make the effort to become informed. At a crossroads where we're all searching for a tipping point to get the rest of the country TO CARE, I would think that some would care that 500 ABA lawyers signed a resolution and if that doesn't work, to find out that there is indeed (not a tin hat story) another program that is affecting their lives. These 2 articles give the story mainstream credibility and that will be necessary to keep this conflict alive.
Posted by mainsailset at February 15, 2006 07:14 AMDear Judith, I thought you wanted the trolls to stay on point, then your bring up the deaths of the children in Iraq, almost gleefully, not necessarily in their physical deaths, but in the "bad" news and how it might effect Bush.
Regarding the NSA matters and your worries about the abuse that might be perpetuated by our government....
Go no further than Bill Clinton, who somehow illegally got his hands on the FBI files of five hundred Republicans and politicians across the USA. They merely apologized for the mistake. No outrage, no sence of criminality, just hey, I"m sorry.
Again, the NSA matter is a simple one, but the truth doesn't give you rise to be so angry, so you will ignore it.
Jimmy Carter spied on foreign nationals and eavesdropped on them without a warrant. Then in 1978, a Democratic Congress attempted to thwart "some" warrantless wiretaps.
Carter's chief, and every AG since they have said, that FISA and Congress can not limit the power that the CONSTITUTION gives to the President to act upon a foreign aggressor. Unless an Amendment is passed which suppresses that power, the President can and will continue to wiretap foreign conversations from happening.
Why not file an amendment or better yet, ask your bet wetting liberal congressmen to petition the Courts to give foreign terrorists the same rights as American citizens?

In a district illegally re-drawn by Tom DeLay, and rigged to guarantee GOP control, a GOP candidate heavily funded by GOP bigwigs and endorsed by Gov. Perry was smashed by a Dem candidate 58-42%. Whats interesting here is not only the degree of defeat for the GOPer, but the fact that the numbers exactly mirror George Bush's national rating. Pretty big stuff there... coming up with the deficit reduction act of 1993 as the best thing going for Democrats in the past 30 years!!!
BWA HAHAHA!!!
The truth is that congress (not a President) writes the budgets... So 1995-2000 were all budgets written by Newt and gang in the congress. Not by Clinton. The lion's share of your statistics took place while Republicans in the House wrote the budget and Republicans in the Senate approved it... and allowed President Clinton the honor of signing them into law. Business taxes were cut during the mid-late nineties... welfare reform was enacted... The 1994 contract with America balanced budget amendment was put in place... all these things (not the fact that our President was getting his horn honked) was the reasons that our economy was relatively good.
I say relatively... because as we know now many of the jobs and gains were built on the DotCom bubble which eventually busted.

Posted by God Of War at February 15, 2006 12:56 PMColdheart, Clinton also "had the honor of signing into law" the elimination of the source tax, elimination of real estate capital gains taxes, and Roth IRAs. And we have to commend the 1994 agenda that the GOP swept into Congress with. The people really got behind those agenda items. The Democrats could definitely use something similar to ignite people's optimism.
I heard most of the Bernanke speech this morning, after the politicos made their political statements. Bernanke seemed a little nervous, but delivered some smooth commentary. Much has changed during that time. To claim Republicanism as if the philosophy of the party has not altered (and in my opinion, quite drastically) is either disingenuous or uneducated.

Yes, the Congress did an outstanding job on that one. We should all be glad that Clinton took some time out of his busy schedule to sign it. Agreed?
Although some are saying that's when the real estate bubble started...

Hey! It only took you 3 hours to find it! I'm impressed....
I ask again:
Bush justified EGTRAA based on the largest budget surpluses in history...wha' happen'?
Dude, I've been educating you folks on that 97 legislation for years. Clinton didn't do much during his 2 terms, but at least he signed that one. That's the one that produced the temporary surplus due to Roth IRA conversions. Once those ended... POOF! No more surplus. That and 9/11.
